Adam Savage Visits Wētā Workshop's Dragon Fire Forge!
Ғылым және технология
Wētā Workshop's Richard Taylor tours Adam through their fantasy weapons forge stage, complete with massive brick furnace and an ornate dragon motif. The set is completely convincing as a worn and weathered environment, but constructed using Wētā Workshop suite of propmaking and fabrication techniques. It's just one of the many fantastical locations featured at Wētā Workshop Unleashed!

Bluck smyth wants to know why is there a good furnace inside but then the room heating area for you to get burn over when trying to use the forge? 🤦♂🤣 "FIRE WHAT DOES IT DO?" Got to love a guy at his executive level who knows the name of every maker and credits them by name.

@@Vickie-Bligh This is the difference between corporate model companies and artisan model companies. The executives aren't just there to move numbers around. They are there to guide the creative process - which is well known to them based on hands on experience - into a financially viable outcome. If we had this kind of structure in politics, the world we live in would be much different.

I loved that they found the foam trick for the coal from someone else online. They’re giants and innovators in their field but still learning and finding new techniques. Cool to see.

True master's of a craft are more than willing to admit that they don't know everything and and are always looking for new innovations and techniques. Anyone who says they know it all and refuse to learn more are just proving where they fall on a Dunning-Krueger graph.

@@charlesmoore3390 Yup, i experience this often on the Jiu-Jitsu mat. We often talk about how we don't care whose idea it was, we're just looking for the best and most efficient techniques. Makes no difference to me if it was a black belt or a blue belt that came up with it.
I'm so glad Adam cultivated this relationship to the point he can pick up fresh props and bang around sets. So fun to watch these two live their dreams and showcase their skillsets.
This workshop is just a couple of Kilometers from my house and we are all very proud of Richard for his amazing contribution to our city and country.
Anybody else remember first meeting Richard via the special features on the LotR extended edition? It's been 20 years and the man hasn't aged a day, he must be wearing the ring.
@SweetLou0523

That was literally my first thought. I've seen the special features more than the actual movies. The Weta workshop ones are my favorite, and it struck me just how little he has changed in 22 years.

Yes, this big, kind of gangly, sort of awkward sounding, humble guy who somehow ran EVERYTHING as a small, unknown FX house started the incredible journey to the behemoth with a very family feel to it we know now. Amazing man. The other thing I remember is Gino and the Russian guy (Dmitri?) trading skills for practical and digital airbrushing to bring Gollum to life. Man those extras were epic, all of them.

I've been watching these as they've come out and it took until now for me to notice the Labyrinth T-shirt worn by Richard. A Weta exec repping Henson as a fan feels like respect where it's due. Beautiful work in that smithy.

I watched that movie so many times as a kid. Definitely one of my favorites.
I recently made an old fantasy book out of cardboard and paper laying around. I balled the cardboard up and reopened it until it looked wrinkly. Dipped the papers in black tea to make them look Old. Painted the cardboard to look used and faded. when I was finished with the painting the book looked so amazing and felt really like an old book you found in an abandoned house. it felt great to make something out of scraps and it look like something amazing and real.

*i do a lot of texturing of parchment like paper using various techniques from watercolor to fabric dye crystals and even selectively scuffing the pages using sandpaper i prefer a more random organic look and most pieces have many layers so one sheet of paper can take weeks of work off and on...i've done this sort of thing for decades...as with anything related to art i consider this my sanity therapy*
It's nice to see Richard talking about knocking out some parts himself in between interviews with Adam. Also, I would have totally expected that anvil to be real!
*no doubt someone will see this forge and fabricate their own fully functional forge using real materials...because such a thing needs to exist*
Could you imagine if someone went through it with a VR recorder. I would pay so much for a virtual tour of the exhibit.
As a full-time blacksmith, these guys are making my dream workshop lol
"Quick and simple" that workmanship is amazing!
Has Adam ever seen Dennis Lowe's Alien Makers website? It has a ton of behind the scenes of the movie Alien that is not available on any official release. It was an act of love by Dennis himself. He also had help from Jon Sorensen and Simon Deering.. it has hours of content in photos and video.
As someone studying in uni and moved countries to be able to become a modelmaker Weta is such an inspiration with everything they make
You two are like a couple of kids who have been locked into a lolly shop over night, and no one knows you are there. There is just joy at what you have found. No “I’m better than you.”, just plain admiration for each other’s work.
As a blacksmith, I can say that it looks awesome. I could work there.

They do such amazing work, and quickly too. I'm glad we have so many keeping these techniques alive.
The exhibition is totally worth it. It can be a great time for the kids at the same time any older nerd just wanting to get a closer look or hands on with some of this stuff it definitely allows that.
these two are infectious towards each other, it's so satisfying to see, can't wait for Adam to do a tour of the finished product!
I love how they not only made this forge, but they made the world to! Even down to having there own head Canon on what the pig in the corner is doing all day, and adding effects based off the character they've created, true dedication to there craft right there!
I'm pretty sure I am stealing the phrase "flourishes of insanity" for when my wife tells me I may be getting a little bold and brazen with my projects at home. "Babe, don't dish my flourishes of insanity."

OMG I am like buying WETA LOTR statues since years and damnly love this company from the dephts of my hearth =D
His energy and enthusiasm is fantastic! it makes the whole video so much more fun to watch!
If Warhammer 40k should ever get a Movie/Trilogie filmed, i hope it is made by Peter Jackson and Weta Studios!
Saw this exhibition in march 2024 and it was so amazing I will admit I got a bit emotional at how incredible it all was, really did inspire me to pick my pencils and sculpting tools back up ❤ I love now getting to see this after being there and learning about how it was made and all the creators and how they collaborate to make something super magical!
Thanks for sharing my favorite Effects Shop again. I love everything they do.
It all looks so real. It reminds me about a lot of the old time shops I've visited.
Truly incredible work. The attention to detail is insane here ♥️
I like how Richard Taylor talked about doing research on the internet, at the very heart of it, we are all alike and like to make and build things...Some made it a real and successful career, others like myself have to constantly defend the junk we created.

What a dream to go in depth with these projects. Wish I could touch them beautiful textures.
Love this place ! Awesome job guys !
I am gathering my vacation days for a New Zealand/Auckland trip this year for sure now. Oh and the money too. :)
Amazing creativity, love it!
The craftsmanship is creative and top quality regardless of the materials used. I love Weta Workshop! Love your channel too!!
What I loved was that when Adam asked how they did the coals looking like they were burning through the slag the guy says: "Well I went on the internet and...". Great to know that even the experts gotta Google it sometimes.
Absolutely loved this...
Totally amazing! So creative and very intelligently built! I'd love to work there!
They could totally build a fantasy theme park and I would go to it!!!
Awesome craftsmanship!
Such a pleasure in complete mastery of their art!
Wow that guy has an awesome imagination! With impeccable delivery!
I would love to see the bandsaw they built! Love this video so much.
That's some great stuff they have over there, always a treat to see what they have conjured up. They should make some rotating set, one side displaying the full decorated scene, and on the other, the bare electronics and seethrough set panels, revealing their secrets.
Gotta love a passionate professional!
So sad my family and I spent a week in New Zealand and didn't make it to the Weta workshops. We will be back for sure.
The realistic character of that boars head is crazy!
Fantastic job
If I could have a time machine to allow me to redo my professional life...I'd give (almost) anything to be a miniature/model maker for Richard Taylor and Weta.
Love this stuff!
That looks crazy cool.
Weta Workshop content will never get old!
I am not sure this design ethos/aesthetic does much for me, but I appreciate the craftsmanship involved.
I really need to find the time to make a trip over to NZ and visit Wētā Workshop
An amazing forge
Amazing!
That looks awesome
That is amazing! I would love to work on stuff like that. Also, I wonder how that much moisture in the water vapor will effect that over time.
This looks absolutely amazing, but I was mildly disappointed to see it was a prop display and not a real forge.. I'd never heard of Weta Workshop, before, so I didn't know what to expect. Still very cool, though.
I would so love to see this place in person!
Now i need to know more about this bandsaw

Just that Richard use's Wiley Coyote as a reference tells me what a cool boss he'd be.
I love his labyrinth shirt, thats great
Weta "quick and easy" = Master thesis level craftsmanship for anyone else lol
Of, there will be a heater added. 😍
As a blacksmith..😮🤔😮🤔😮! I want this outside my door! Easy🤠👍
Every continent should have a Weta wonderland theme park.
I would love to have that in my house
Wow
This felt like a magician slowly revealing what was fake, by the end I half expected him to reveal that he was actually just some latex, foam, and old clothes being controlled by some fishing line.
Wow.
watching Jenny Nicholson's Evermore video prior to watching this has added so much to this video...
Adam, do you know what ever happened to the robot used in Space Camp called jinx. I am trying to find more info to possibly build, since I don’t think anyone has made a remake of it.
Can't imagine the weapons you could make with the ferocity of dragon fire.
That amazing looking boar is "quick".. I can't imagine something they've spent years perfecting. That thing looks so real.. There's three reasons to go to New Zealand, 1)pretty women, 2) amazing rivers/fishing 3) going to Weta.. (in no particular order)
