Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Ghostbusters: Afterlife Hand Prop!
Ғылым және технология
Adam had the opportunity to make a prop for the new Ghostbusters: Afterlife film! Based on the production team's design, Adam sculpted and made castings of a stylized Aztec Death Whistle that is featured in the new movie. And to work on the painting and weathering of this prop and its stunt castings, Adam recruited the help of his former co-host on MythBuster Jr. Allie Weber (@robotmakergirl on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok) to finish the project before heading to the Ghostbusters: Afterlife set to deliver them to director Jason Reitman!

I think my favorite part of this is that Adam was actually having Allie work instead of just showing her his tricks. It's great that he's trusting her competency and letting her learn.

I liked that he didn't fuss over the details. That's such an important lesson, especially for someone like me who is too often a perfectionist. Being a perfectionist can kill the love of something for a lot of people and I really respect how Adam just let her do her thing. You can see that each of these were all a bit different. Some were rougher than others, but it all adds to the experience for her and us.

What I liked was he didn't hover (much) it was "this is how it's done.... your turn and I'm going over here to line up the next thing" although the difference in confidence in the brush strokes was lovely. Adam: splish splash sploosh (but with a practices eye) and Allie: much more tentative.

@@ohnhai it's just experience. It was a nice contrast to watch Adam go ham, Allie take her time. And the end product, obviously with a helpful hint here and there, came out the same. And the fact these are going to be movie used props, and hes still just going, this is how it's done, there ya go and then just leaves her to do her thing. Just beautiful.

Yes I enjoyed that too, letting her do it at her pace with the brush and not the manic style of Adam 😂, and just let her do it, and enjoy the process
Watching Adam teach as he creates is incredibly heartwarming.

I was going to say the same thing! He really knows how to communicate and how to slow down to give important information. Faith in humanity restored.
i love re-watching this again, seeing Adam geek out, teaching the younger generation his methodology is so sweet.
Imagine doing prop work for a Ghostbusters movie at 14! That's like the coolest thing to have on a resumé. Kudos to Adam for being a mentor, and treating Allie not just like a student, but a colleague.

It would be beyond cool. Allie would in fact have proof of that work too!
I love how Adam was talking about how props can walk off a film set and then you see McKenna Grace plotting to do exactly that the minute she sees the whistle. 😂

Well, they did make seven of them and they're a very handy size. They're basically perfect mementos for the actors.

Amazing work Allie and Adam! We saw the film last night and the death whistle prop got a lot of love. SO EXCITING! =D

It's really heartwarming watching how patient Adam is in sharing the experience with Allie. That's the kind of opportunity she'll remember for years to come, not to mention every time she sees the movie! Well done, Adam!
Adam , we all see your enthusiasm and enjoyment in making props etc on these one day builds . It goes up a level when working with someone else but I think it's fair to say you have even more joy working alongside a younger maker 👍👍
Can't help but smile seeing all their excitement at the end.

She looks so grown up, now!
I love seeing Adam treat Allie as a peer. I know they've worked together and know each other very well, but the level of respect he must have for her is truly a delight to see
I love seeing nerds geek out, just the body language of " I'm building... wait, it's built? Keep building." is always a beautiful state of flux to see...
The amount of wholesome sweetness in this video, from Adam teaching Ali what to do step by step and explaining how much he loves prop making, to the very end meeting Jason and Mckenna on the set. I think I may need some insulin.
I appreciate how he let her use the cool, expensive and kind of dangerous toy. He trust her and allow her to really learn. It's kinda cool to see he doesn't judge her by her age.
Just a fantastic video with Adam showing & Leading the young girl in all the layers of weathering.
OMG I'd be so nervous standing there with Adam Savage. It's one thing to watch Adam Savage but to be there with him would be just awesome.
Saw the movie last night! Ghostbusters: Afterlife is almost exactly what I hoped it would be! McKenna Grace is excellent as Phoebe Spengler. I see some are criticising the density of fan service in the film, but actually none of it is cynical... They didn't feel the need to show us Slimer, for example, and the overall effect is one of love for the 1984 original. This wasn't so much a passing-the-torch as it was a generational reflection on Ghostbusters. Also the way the movie handled Harold Ramis' absence was really quite beautiful! Oh - And I shared a knowing nod with my wife when the Aztec Death Whistle turned up :D

I feel the same. The movie is also a demonstration that you can re make a movie and put woman/girls black girl as the main protagonist, making male characters some dumb and relegated to second place. And not offend anyone with it. I think we all enjoyed seen Phoebe being the smart sister explaining to his no so smart brother. Whiteout saying"you are a man you are stupid"

@@oskimac But like-wise as embarrassed as he might have been by her nerdiness, he cares. It was relatable teenage sibling back n forth.
Every time I watch Adam do any weathering, I think of him as Mr Miyagi repeating "Wax On, Wax Off" as he applies and removes paint. then this episode comes along and he even has a student to teach this method. Its amazeing to see and I love watching this whole process.
Love watching Adam guide and teach these processes. I could see Adam doing a whole series of these videos in which he teaches young makers.
This is so cool to learn that Adam (and Allie) made this. They are so cool. I want one so bad.
Adam seems like such a great teacher both with his excitement and how readily he hands things off to those he's working with. That's always a challenge with teaching something like this, being able to let someone take over on something that matters. And Allie is obviously talented as well to be able to keep up with all that. I hope she gets a chance to use what she learned there.
Wonderful watching your teaching methods. You do what so many do not and let your student work at their own speed. And the work you showed her how to do was amazing.
Wonderful moments of teaching, from one teacher to another. I salute you, Adam.
Great looking props. It's also great to see how he includes and teaches his assistant while still working in his normal frenzied pace.
Just seen Afterlife this evening. It’s the perfect 3rd Movie! When do we get Part 2 of this build, I wanna know how Adam put that deathly scream into such a small object!
Watching the joy exude from Adam as he creates just makes me incredibly happy. We could use a lot more Adam Savages in this world!
I've been watching your ODBs and Tested videos for a couple of years now. THIS one is best-in-class. Teach young people an important skill like this is SO rewarding both for the student AND the teacher. Wow. This bumped my optimism up by several points just watching this 30 minute piece. Thank you Adam, and thank you Allie!
It'll be cool when Prop Store has one of these and they come back to Adam for provenance
Saw it on early access passes. AMAZING! Loved the whistle, great job folks.
this is by far one of my all time fav videos. teaching and passing down both knowlage and passion for the craft
Adam getting to make props for the new Ghostbusters is awesome, but what is making me tear up is that he chose to share that experience with Allie as a next generation maker. L:ove this so much!!
Awesome build! I think it is so awesome that Allie gets to learn from Adam.
I love watching Adam Savage work with kids. He's gentle, but he doesn't talk down at all to them.
Passing the torch: Ghostbusters Ghostbusters Director Adam Savage 🤗
That was a great video. Watching you show Allie how to do things and explain why the things do what they do was really cool. I love that you love to help/share knowledge with young makers and all makers. I'm so excited about the new Ghost Busters!
Just back from seeing Ghostbusters: Afterlife and these 'death whistles' stole two scenes, very funny! Great suggestion Adam and watching this now with you both just makes the whole experience that much better. Thank you!
Always amazed of Adam's generosity in sharing his knowledge and his kindness...
I can't decide which is better: Allie's excitement to learn and help build a prop for a big blockbuster movie or McKenna's huge, genuine kid-in-a-candy-store grin at seeing and holding such an awesome, hand-made prop. I'm so jealous of both those kids!
Nothing is more heartwarming than watching Adam savage teach, so calming and intriguing! Love it
I literally just saw the movie and then I watched this video. So awesome to know where that prop came from!!!
HIGHLY EDUCATIONAL, deeply rewarding, I have been holding off watching these videos out of fear of spoilers... coming to your channel after Afterlife has given me an even deeper level of appreciation to a film I already intend to obsess over. THANK YOU, ADAM for your commitment to movie magic and sharing that love with the world!
Fantastic work. I saw the film on Friday, and that death whistle was SO AWESOME!
Two of my favorite things: Adam Savage, and Ghostbusters. Looking forward to seeing more Ghostbusters projects
This was awesome. Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge and experience!
Sooooooo GLAD to see Ally again! I miss those kids and that show. You ought to involve more of the young genius' in "Tested".
Adam you are one hell of a teacher... Very awesome....
Just finished watching this and on my way to the first showing of Ghostbusters! Can’t wait to see these on screen!
Well this was a pleasant surprise. I JUST got back from the movie and this prop scene was HYSTERICAL. Good job. Also the fact I was telling people I haven't seen a movie with such amazing visual effects and spectacular sound effects that just mold the movie experience since Blade Runner 2049 and YOU referenced that movie in this video LOL. I really feel like Jason Reitman took the 1st movie and mixed it with the Goonies - and THIS prop totally helped push that vibe!
Enjoyed watching this build when you released it. Then the next day I saw the new Ghostbusters. It was great to see these in use and knowing the backstory on them. Makes you appreciate what goes in to movie making. Thanks Adam.
This item was far more prominent that I'd thought it would be in the movie. Kudos!
Adam is so good with kids. Allie is getting an amazing education from the best in the business, wow.
Awesome seeing the minds of youth be opened by such a great teacher. Thank you Adam.
When you thought you couldn't love and respect Adam Savage anymore, this video. It would literally make my lifetime to meet him just to shake his hand. You are a wonderful person, creator and magician. Because to perform magic with your creativity. Absolutely amazing.
Fantastic watching Adam mentoring the next generation as they both get their hands dirty! Great job Allie!
So amazing watching the pair working together. Adam is the perfect teacher 🙂
Adam is my biggest inspiration for all the props I’ve made up to this point in my life. Hope he keeps doing what he loves and continues to inspire other people such as myself. Btw, this is so cool to see him making props for films such as this! Keep up the great work!

10 years from now. Adam: That looks like one of MY props .... let me check for my mark. Yep there it is! Good to see you again!
He's having fun. Teaching in a way, also creating. Explaining his craft is as fun as making it too.
Imagine learning prop making from Adam... I might be old, but damn that would be cool.
Just saw the movie .. loved it ! Great prop ,wonderful BTS video
BRILLIANT! Have seen the movie twice and love this prop!
I'd love to see Adam teaching other people more often. He's a very good teacher: attentive, patient, he gives advice but also lets his student do the work and potentially make mistakes. Thats how you learn.
This is so heartwarming, seeing one of my heroes pass his knowledge and techniques to the next generation, outstanding Adam, thank you for sharing this
Entirely awesome! Adam and Allie, great work!
Adam teaching is just remarkable. It's a blessing that he's teaching the next generation
Like everyone else here, I am blown away by what an incredible teacher Adam is, just fantastic. And I think we'll be seeing more of his apprentice in the future, and I look forward to it!!
Master and Grasshopper. How rewarding and enjoyable.
Amazing Adam! This was a great prop in the movie - you are always a great presenter, explainer and your enthusiasm is soooo infectious! My dream one day - visit the cave and help with a build :)
Great tutorial on how to weather a prop but more importantly, excellent tutorial on how to be a mentor and leader - calm, supportive, never talking down to Allie and explaining why you do each step. That is how you encourage and train someone - well done Adam. I am hoping Allie got one of those in end, they looked great in the movie.
Loving this format, it really brings the pedagogy out of Adam.
I saw the movie and absolutely loved it, the death whistles were so cool I need one!
The way that Adam explains things as he is teaching her the process of each step... he's like the world's greatest shop teacher.
so much joy for the craft and the love of sharing.
This is wholesome AF, and the video I didn't know I needed right now.
Wonderful experience for a young maker. And Adam has a great teaching style 😊
Ahh that looks so awesome..I think I might make one myself inspired by this! As a first go at sculpting
So awesome to watch…. Making Ghostbuster so special in so many ways.
I didn't think I'd enjoy this one, but it was so interesting watching the whole process as you built the look up. How you let Allie get hands on properly with such an important set I Truely loved. She did it at a gentler slower pace! But you let her just do it, and make her mark and allow her to see what she was creating on her own. Fantastic video, one of my favourites with you Adam, nicely done 🤗
that was tremendously fun and educational...please do more of these
Last year i 3D printed a proton pack, once assembled I used a two-part resin to coat and strengthen the print, mixed the resin in a red solo cup, I've never worked with resin before, mixed a little too much resin, and felt the cup getting warmer. Finally, I see it smoking. Learned real quick that resin is an exothermic reaction.
I was looking for this prop when I saw tha movie today. I was so elated when I saw it and how it was used. Amazing work Adam
Very cool! What a wonderful experience for you both to have something you made in the movie :D
Imagine Adam handing you his air brush and asking you to paint a prop with him in his shop. So cool!!
This is awesome I love that he actually got to make a prop for the movie and he got to include other people in that. I’m excited to look for that prop in the movie
I appreciate how she has all this safety equipment and Adam being adam just goes head first like usual
OMG I want one. Nice work Allie, hope you got to make an extra casting to keep.
Awesome. Wish we could have seen the sculpting process too. And the reaction from Jason and McKenna is just fabulous. Cannot wait to see the movie this coming Saturday.
