Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Ghostbusters Proton Pack!

Ғылым және технология

In anticipation of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Adam makes a replica Proton Pack inspired by the film, complete with a full complement of interactive lights, smoke effects, and extra greeblies to make it his own personal version of the iconic prop. And better yet, Adam is granted access to one of the hero Proton Pack filming props from Ghostbusters: Afterlife which he uses as reference for his detailing and finishing. Here's how Adam's custom Proton Pack came out!

I don’t see why this is so difficult for people, I make sure I point out the “why” part so folks can go create their own solutions, give general guidance on what I would or wouldn’t do and most importantly, positive feedback and recognition. I like how he also explains the if/then/else parts, a clear sign of how someone can develop a strategy to solve a problem. A strategy is nothing more than a decision tree.

Adam & Jen are like the Kirk & Spock of the maker scene. They're both brilliant on their own but when they team up they're practically unstoppable. Adam's approach is almost pure, unbridled passion, he's like a little kid who just can't wait to get his hands dirty and his enthusiasm rubs off on everyone around him. Jen is equally passionate but she temper's it a bit under this logical, thought-out process. The two of them should honestly set up some sort of Maker's Academy to mentor new makers.

I remember the first proton pack I built. Stuck a backpack inside a cardboard box, with holes cut in the box for the straps. Then I found some old video game system that had a light gun controller that you could convert from a pistol, to a long barreled pistol to a rifle, that attached to the console by a long cable (wished I could remember the name of the console. It was before even the Nintendo system around the time of the first movie). Anyhow, cut a hole, stuck the system through, painted the box black, and hand drew and colored with markers a Ghostbusters symbol, and glued it on the box. It wasn't fancy, or perfect, but I had my own "Unlicensed Nuclear Accelerator" on my back. Of course, I was about 13 at the time, with a lot of medical issues... Maybe it's time for a MkII version... Thank you, Adam Savage for the inspiration...

Hey Adam, I've got a question when it comes to aging props: One thing I learned from being in the military and dealing with equipment that's been handed down and heavily used for decades is that almost every piece of equipment that's seen long term use has pieces of tape or tape adhesive on various parts, but it's something I've never seen used on props (places where you could tell tape had previously been and left behind residue, or pieces of tape that had been ripped off and left small pieces behind). It makes for great texture and feel/reality, but I never see it used; why is that?

My current pack is made from recycled cardboard and found items from around the house. (Build time was just under 3 months due to my full-time job.) I used hot glue to imitate weld lines where needed and weathered them with metallic aluminum craft paint. It does have an authentic Spectra computer ribbon cable (GB 2 style) and screen accurate hoses where needed. It's 6 years old as of this writing and everyone who sees it can't believe it's cardboard! The screen-accurate lighting kit really helps a lot! (purchased from a seller on Etsy last year.) It runs off of 1, 9-volt rechargeable battery and lasts at least 6 hours of continuous use. A huge Bluetooth speaker is inside the cyclotron so I can play music wherever I go. Granted, my pack is heavily weathered and I used layers and layers of corrugated cardboard as well as 2 bottles of wood glue to make it nice and sturdy. And it weighs roughly 12 pounds with the Hasbro Plasma Series Spengler's Nuetrona Wand (modified to resemble the original 84 version) and ALICE frame.

I think the antenna style on the ion arm is a nice touch. It gives a nod to Egon Spengler's character in Afterlife with him having so many antennas on the roof of the farmhouse. I can't wait to see more and this has definitely made me want to build a one to one replica pack of my own.

If only we could get these built for us as kids in the 80s! I was 13 when GB came out and I fell in love with their gear straight away. Being a geeky nerdy kid at school I was fascinated in how this kit was meant to work and would have given a limb to own a prop like that. Awesome work. Let’s hope the movie gives all the original fans what they have been waiting for! No pressure Mr Reitman! :)

I enjoyed this video more than I should've, lol! It was especially cool hearing you talk about the naming of the pack parts, which I was one of the builders who came up with some of the parts names, basically trying to standardize things a bit to ease up confusion. Very cool build and I love your enthusiasm throughout the build, but honestly I'm bummed you and Jason didn't use my aluminum wands, lol!

Adam I love the builds you do when you have a crew working with you like this one and the ones you did building the starwars project. Hearing you talk with the others reminds me of how my dad talked with others when working on projects. No he was not in the same business at all and I lost him a little over 20 years ago now. It was just the way you talked when working out any issues or just getting your point out there on how you needed it to be done. And no not in a way that made it sound like you were telling them to do it your way but how you could tell you had a plan that would work and to guide others. Thank you

15:57 I made the crank generator on my pack build into the power switch. It actually has 2 modes: normal operation and visualizer. Visualizer takes in ambient sound (or sound pumped out through the pack speakers; I also added an aux in) and controls the pack lights based on the sound.
