The upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte-streaming June 4 on Disney Plus-will introduce Pip: a handheld repair droid developed by creature effects legend Neal Scanlan and designed in Autodesk’s Fusion software. Today, Adam sketches out his own idea for a Star Wars-inspired droid and invites Bill Doran to the workshop to turn that design into a working 3D-printed character!

It would be cool to have a ballast container in the afterburner so that you could hide washers to get the Droid to balance perfectly

It has wheels. The only way it can passively balance is if its centre of mass is below the axis it pivots from. With the funny camber, this can only be described as "the line between the centre of the plane of each wheel through the centre of its contact patch on the ground". It looks like there's a tiny bit of the body below that, so the model boat trick (lead shot mixed with epoxy poured in) might work. Possibly a better way to make it passively balance would be to add weights which drop down to the inner side of each wheel (or within each wheel) but are rigidly connected to the wheel hubs. This gives you more distance below the axis so you can use less weight to balance it. This also allows the body to be entirely above the axis it pivots on, which makes the illusion of it defying physics a lot more convincing. Then moving the weight forward or backward by adding weight to the afterburner would only make the robot look up or down while balancing, and can't make it balance. Passive balancing would be great, because then it works as a desk model, can be driven around with low acceleration using a regular RC control system or can be driven around fast with an active self-balancing control system.

@5:33 "I don't have to be able to picture a full design in my head, i can just keep drawing shapes until something becomes apparent to me. Until like an idea or a theme starts to shake itself loose." As someone who is lacking a bit of direction in life, this really spoke to me.

When he said "one day build" sketched it out, and minutes later a full 3D model appeared, I questioned my own modelling skill and life choices. At least they clarified it was 4 days of modelling and printing at 25:22
@Vincent_Beers

A one day build often refers to the assembly time, not necessarily the design and planning stages. He wanted to design something that wouldn't take days to assemble like a room scale model would require.
We love it! Thanks for helping us spread the word about the contest 💛🤖
This has a very Trade Federation feel to it. The shell is reminiscent of a battle droid head and the camber of the wheels looks like the Hailfire Droid
I can totally see this robot made into a remote controlled toy, with wireless camera too. The design is very practical.

I am sure Autodesk is happy with this episode. I first used Autodesk Autocad Version 2 back in the mid 80's for circuit board layouts. I then used almost all of their products over the next 35 years with Fusion becoming my go-to design tool in my retirement years.

I’ve really come around to the philosophy that Adam talks about where things “reveal” themselves to you throughout the creative process, instead of trying to force something into existence. It’s affected my short story writing in a great way. It’s also fun because it makes it okay to not know the answer when someone asks you something, because it’s almost like the answer is there somewhere but even you, the creator, don’t know. It gives a particular sort of life to a world.

I like planning things out but I have noticed I get good results from either long-term planning, or picking, like, a theme or a couple words or something then trying to follow where that goes, and the latter takes less time.

Adam and Bill collaboration is always great to watch.
I'm curious if you'll be releasing the files for this little guy, I would love to print and add him to my collection 😀
I love when the universe (and/or Tested) delivers quality "on-time" information... just started learning Fusion a couple months ago and through the frustration has been delivered subtle hints of what the future holds. Then I see this master and it's like meeting the pope after graduating catholic middle-school. Love you guys. Keep it up.
The speed at which this was accomplished is amazing 😮

That guy went above and beyond anything Adam ever conceived in his mind.
I'd love if you released these files so we could paint and weather our own!
Very cool to see you 2 together. You complete each other 😊
amazing timing for me, ive spent all day in Fusion 360 learning how to use it. i just got a CNC, and CAM/CAD is super new to me. very exciting to see it here in such a fun way!
Very inspiring to see this collab and especially Bill’s modeling/engineering chops shine.
It's a treat to see the process of someone who knows how to work within the constraints of 3d printing, the assembly design was just as impressive as the droid's design.
The only problem was not printing two copies. It was like watching two kids sharing one Christmas toy.
Anyone else getting 'Batteries not included' flashbacks? Loved watching the design and thought process, thanks Adam.
Dang Adam is actually a pretty damn good artist!
Honestly, looks like the front end of an old tractor, they can have the wheels that tilt in to avoid crushing crops. This is why missions to moon and Mars will certainly have 3-D printers as being able to produce replacement parts or tools will be priceless.
This was a real treat.👌 We use quite a lot of Fusion for prototyping, but we never do fun projects like this.
Autodesk is awesome!!

That is a level of 3d printing I have never even thought of before
This feels like a true in-universe droid that could be marketed tomorrow as a toy for the consumer market. So cool! Sign me up for the first round of sales!!
Designing sci fi robots and this channel are two of my favorite things and I didn't expect to see them in the same place, so cool!
I was expecting a single piece static model but the result was truly impressive, this is one of most incredible videos on the channel, i can imagine a full working prototype made with all tested team like the star field series it would be amazing developing all the parts and fit the electronics in there. For those who wonder how much a 3d print shrinks it depends of the printer itself, the band, the model and the type (if it’s a resin, pla, nylon, etc), but as I’ve measured various models over the years the average shrinking distance it’s 0.02mm, it could seems a trivial thing but on small models and precision tasks like tread a bolt it can be important consider make slightly bigger holes on your model
I don't know what it is, but your voice got me excited about creating stuffs. And I got carried away trying to make a clay model for the first time. Maybe it's the energy you give out.
I loved everything about this. You could make a whole series of doing this with different people's droid designs and I'd eat it up.
I really enjoy these collaborations, looking forward to more of them in the future.

Having played around with Fusion360 quite a bit for tiny home projects and 3D printing, it's awesome to see it applied to the process from sketch to actual physical model. Turns out I'm doing a lot of things right already, still I love the stuff I learn in your videos Adam! Thanks for the inspiration
WOW this was a JOY to Watch.
What a satisfying build !
I love the droid and I can't wait to see the extra greebles and added touches and paint/weathering. Also between this and the Homeworld ship I am having so much fun watching this channel. Keep up all the great builds.
Adam, glue a counter-weight in the underside of the rear nacelle or in the exhaust fairing so the little guy balances on his own. Also, like to see some patina, distressed coating details, and definitely treaded wheels. Droid designation: "TAL-N" (talon) full sensor array clandestine stalking operations.
I'm kinda wanting to see this now in metal with electronics and the whole works
Dude. This is literally the coolest thing. What talent tou two have as a team.

This was an amazing depiction of the art process and collaborating with other experts in different fields to make awesome things
I love this little guy, I really love the self balancing wheels concept and for some reason I was think that those wheels could shift horizontally and become small hover propellers giving the droid a flight mode
This is one of my favourite episodes in a while! Love you both. Great little droid you managed to create in such a short timeframe! And Bill… modeling in CAD is my happy place too!
