Adam Savage Builds a Box for His Dueling Pistol Replicas!

Ғылым және технология

Adam's obsession with the Hamilton stage musical has lead him to find perfect replicas not only of the original dueling pistols used by Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, but the originally sourced replicas used by the propmaster for the stage production! Thus begins Adam's builds of era-appropriate carrying cases for these replicas, and modifying the props themselves to be more accurate to how they're represented in the musical!

Yeah. It reminds me of the box for the Blade Runner gun, which was the first of Adam’s videos I watched. Was definitely a factor in getting me to start making stuff.

Crazy how I would take a box like this totally for granted but seeing it all built gives me such an appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into it

  • @aka-chi_hurron

The part that he stated "I think my gloves are compromised" and went to promptly change them shows clearly that Adam is very experienced and comfortable as a craftsman, but doesn't allow himself to become lax. Allot of people would have gone "meh they're compromised already so whats the issue?" Its the experienced crafters that get injured most often as they become comfortable and so become lax. I do wish he took a moment to address it though. Proper safety measures are always a great thing to mention, especially what to do when they fail.

I just watched Hamilton live here in the Philippines, thought nothing of it at first, just brushed it off as a "unique" broadway show, I liken it to just something I just pass by a mall without a care in the world. I just went for my GF, after watching it, it's probably one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. It's always been stuck in my head for over a month now and that very rarely happens. It's one of the best THINGS I have ever had a pleasure to experience. If you can go, GO!

FYI for anyone aiming to get these, the base is model 1043/L, but it may come with the wrong hammer, so you may need to switch it out for the style on their model 1031/L. Also, the original Public Theater production's props were on display years ago with unaltered gold parts, so that can still be considered accurate.

Adam. Have you ever tried using cloth, wrapping your object tightly to get the curves, and then using the vacuum former to get the perfect shape for an object, and then using flexi-felt to cover it and create a perfectly smooth and tight fit for your fragile/older relics? It looks beautiful.

Years ago a gun magazine hired an expert to examine the dueling pistols, which were kept in a private Rockefeller museum at the Chase Manhattan Bank. He claimed in the article that Hamilton's gun was modified to have a hair trigger, presumably to give Hamilton an advantage. The theory he presented was that Hamilton was a bit nervous, and accidentally fired early, missing his mark and hitting a tree branch. Burr then had time to aim precisely.

In the two productions of Hamilton I've seen he fiddles with his pistol just before the duel starts, I've assumed this was a nod to him adjusting the set (hair) trigger.

Adam, I really enjoy watching your process. One little thing on this one scared me though. When you were cutting your box into 2 pieces, your feather board was in a very dangerous place. It should never apply pressure past the front edge of the blade as you cut. Putting pressure where the blade is can cause kickback. Just a thought

I have been wanting to make a similar box for an original British flintlock sea service pistol I bought from a museum. It was a battlefield pick up from the battle of New Orleans during the war of 1812. I still take it out and fire it on Special Occasions. Great shooter, but it's very hard to hit anything, being it has no sights

All that work to hide the grain ends of plywood, but then you left them on the edges where you cut the box open so that when the box is opened my eyes are immediately drawn to the bands of plywood. A bit of adhesive veneer strips, frequently used on the edges of furniture, would've hidden that. But I realize this is just theater quality you're going for.
