The main problem is those people who said islam is good for human being. Either they didnt read quran or hadis fully or they live in rich country where they live as minority. Well im form Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩 and i know the situation here. Its hell 100% hell to live in society where muslim is 80%+ and im also muslim by born. I hate my hypocrite islamic society. I hate my religion. I want to go other country where i can live like human not as muslim..but i cant coz i want to be an artist..so i have to live here. I love some people and i love this land also...

@John Connor and speaking of knowing the future, may I suggest you look into major and minor signs in islam, and please, maybe try to actually read without bias and see for yourself whether prophet Mohammed PBUH knew the future or not ^^

As a non-religous agnostic, I have to say Adam did a very good job here.

I disagree. Adam's argument was that Islam may focus on self-discipline and avoidance of war, but he failed to rebut the opposition's argument that the religion intrinsically & explicitly treats non-muslims like crap, and its laws are very gender biased. Adam Deen said to ignore the bad places such as Saudi, but Anne-Marie was very right in that Saudi is NOT the extreme fringe of Islam, but the centre of it. Adam failed to rebut the gender mistreatment and instead focused on the Islam preaching and practice of war & Muhammad's treatment of certain prisoners of war. He failed to cover his ass regarding the use of sex slaves of women of captured cities. In other words, Adam ignored the real world problems of Islam and only cherry picked the main messages of Islam to show that it has a peaceful message. He was totally cherry-picking scriptures/stories from the Quran, and failed to address poor human rights record found in Muslim countries today. Instead of addressing the opposition's arguments, he decided to preach about Islam to the audiences. He did a good job at preaching, but not at debating.

Yes, so it does have things that talk about violence,like being sent into hell, yes, but the real Muslims HAVE to keep tolerance with other religions. I have muslims near me, they are always so nice to approach, they always say peace be on you when ever I meet them, and they are constantly giving charity. People are cherry picking those verses that may refer to violence, and they explain it in a way the Quran doesn’t mean to explain. Other religions have the punishment of hell threat as well for rejecting faith, not just us.

@@dex7145 Most religions threaten the consequence of hell but Islam preaches violence against women, homosexuals and non believers. the Quran has at least 109 verses about war against non believers on the basis of their non muslim status. these include commands to cut off the heads and fingers of infidels and kill them and call muslims who do not join the fight "hypocrites". This is the teaching of islam and its not the opposition who were wrongly interpreting the teachings of the quran it was the proposition who were knowingly ignoring the true teachings of Islam.

It's not a balanced point of view, it's demonstrably nonsensical. All he says is that Islam is great in theory. Well, in practice, it sucks. Countries with Islam-based laws are disastrously unjust, while the most irreligious countries are the most just and the most forward-thinking.

Ok so how does Islam “define itself”? Many parts of the Quran seem to be ambiguous because nobody can completely agree on what exactly they mean. Everybody claims they have the right interpretation. So which one is the “right” one?

As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding. [3:7]

I liked the phrase "islam is compatible with violence, but not identical to violence". There are tens pf milions muslims in the middle east supporting violence knowing Islam is compatible with it. Such a peaceful religion.

That's based on your interpretation, which is the problem with any religion. But let's face facts, the Koran encourages the killing of apostates and blasphemers. So it is not about fighting what peaceful people would think of as injustice. Never in the history of the world has religion used that interpretation of Jihad. Islam became a larger religion through conquest. Not because it used violence in self defence. My original point stands.

@Alphi Joseph - the propaganda is actually from the islamaphobes, governments and mainstream media against Islam. It is these sources that portray Islam as a violent religion because a minority of individuals who happen to be Muslims commit an act of terror. This does not make Islam a religion of violence but that is the narrative being pushed all over the world. Unfortunately most people do believe, without questioning, what they see and hear on the mainstream media. This, together with lack of knowledge on Islam leads them to believe that Islam is a religion of violence. This video is part of Oxford University's debate where there were people debating that Islam is a religion of violence and this video is the opposing view that Islam is a religion of peace. Even if this video was not part of a debate, there is nothing wrong in informing people about the misconceptions they hold, in this case about Islam. Especially as mainstream media is misguiding people about Islam and in doing so creating fear and violence in the way of hate crimes. It is better to correct their misconceptions about Islam rather than leaving them to believe what is untrue and hopefully end their fear and phobia about Islam and show them what they see/hear in the media about Islam is not true but actually the opposite. That it is a peaceful religion but allows war in self defence but within just rules and if there is a peaceful solution then choose this peaceful solution.

Muslims say Qur'an teaches peace and freedom of opinion. I do not agree. I read it. I felt sick. The word LOVE is not written in the Quran, not even once. The words SLAVE, KILL, BOOTY, WAR, SLAUGHTER, etc... are written many times. In Islam there is only one opinion, Sharia tells you what to eat, how to dress, what to do, what not to do, how to think. Islam is not a religion, it is a political system which uses the Divine to impose its totalitarian ideology.

No, he clearly provides evidence from the Quran, Hadith, and basic logic that shows how Muslims are supposed to act. "Share food with prisoners" not stale bread and water. That alone should be enough to show the true character of Islam. Why would they do that if they were evil? You can say that he is simply lying if you wish, but then you forfeit the claim to no true scotsman. Furthermore, disregarding his statements without good faith efforts to discover the truth will never be a just way to evaluate Islam. Only you will know in your heart what truly constitutes good faith efforts.

The speaker denies the validity of pacifism as a moral failing but does not back up this statement with any evidence of any kind. This is a big hole in the argument.

Napalm6b yes he does rather crudely condemn pacifism as a whole. But i suspect, given the limited time, he was approaching it in the narrow context of the debate at hand and islam’s historical inception. Islam isn’t against pacifism per say; this is evident from the makkan period when tremendous violence against muslims was not met with equal violence but restraint and pacifism by the muslims and the prophet. Now of course it did not work in the way it did for mlk and ghandi; but that is the hit and miss nature of it. Now because islam is a 360 religion, it draws a line between pacifism and appeasement. For example, pacifism against hitler would not work. This is where islam draws the line for purposes of self defense and fighting back. Ghandi and mlk would look rather foolish, indeed unethical doing what they did against hitler.

I love how this man argues that the Qur'an is not passive, and thank God for that. It fully acknowledges that turning a blind eye to injust conflict, and the oppressed is immoral. That only when you have been wronged and you've taken every approach possible is it okay to take up arms. It then goes on to stress violence should not be a resort to solving every problem that arises. This isn't a world full of clouds and unicorns; injustice happens on the daily which one must stand up to.

The main problem is those people who said islam is good for human being. Either they didnt read quran or hadis fully or they live in rich country where they live as minority. Well im form Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩 and i know the situation here. Its hell 100% hell to live in society where muslim is 80%+ and im also muslim by born. I hate my hypocrite islamic society. Yes exactly. You can find lots of violence in old testament. It is all what you make of it. And books of religion might be interpreted not litterally and it also might be taken into consideration when they where written and that the word of God, Allah could also have been combined with the person who wrote it's words...

Those words of Jesus was quoting a character in a parable, not telling his people to kill anyone. Jesus was never violent, even when violence was done to him. He specifically commanded his followers to not be violent. Matthew 26:52 "Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword."

Whether or not the man is correct about the "essence" of Islam being peaceful, I would like wish him success in spreading this view among believers. But rather, this is where the problem is with this proposition: the essentialist claim that it is peaceful distorts the realities of what "peaceful" means and/or of what Islam is and has been, since if someone accepts this claim and sees things in Islam that should not be viewed as peaceful, they might adjust their views of what "peaceful" means so that "peaceful" is no longer "peaceful". Better to acknowledge that the religion is ancient and massive and contains contradicting values, and picking which values to accept and which to reject. Although, I am speaking from my position as an atheist, of course. This method is quite a bit more difficult as an actual believer, I suppose. But hopefully it is still a view that can be accepted as valid and appreciated even by theists who do wish to claim that this is "the essence" of the religion. Cheers.

While I agree that it would be best for our society, picking what "is" and what "isn't" is exactly what invalidates a religion. For if the Holy book was written by God it must be taken as the truth and whatever is altered by humans later on can not replace the "word of God" since a human is not above God. God is all knowing and perfect from the beginning so there should be no need for any moral updates anyways.

Fight does not necissarily mean with violence. A fight could be in the mind and soul. Even if a sword is mentioned it could be interpreted metaforically.

In the Quran it says that you shouldn’t attack a country or opposition if they want peace, so prophet Mohamed did the right thing because his enemies didn’t want peace. “And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.” (8:61- Saheeh International translation) Also the Quran says that {Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error…} (Al-Baqarah 2:256) Your statement about the prophet Mohamed is complete ludicrous. Muslims, Jews and Christians are meant to get along in Islam, so palestians who were rooting for the holocaust are against Islam. [2.62] Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve. So these palestians who hate Jews are doing the opposite of what allah has told them to, and they oppose the Quran. The Jews and Christians are allies of Muslims.

Shelby B You take that verse out of context. The surah/ chapter descended during the war of the trench. Before the siege, about 2-3 years, the prophet Mohamed signed a treaty with the Jews in madinah, they would live peacefully together and the Jews (Bani Quraydah was the name of these specific Jew tribe) can practice Judaism without any problem, but the rule was if madinah was attacked and there was a siege, the Jews will fight with alongside the Muslims. When the war of the trench happened, the Quraysh tribe (these were against the prophet and always spitting at him and throwing rocks at him in his hometown of Makkah, so that’s why he went to Madinah with the Muslims) attacked madinah, and they were in great numbers. So the Jews thought the Muslims would lose so they ran off instead of fighting with the Muslims, and the Muslims prevailed in the fight. One of the 16 Major Sins is “Turning back when the army advances (running from the battlefield)” so Allah told the Prophet and his People to hunt down these traitors and kill them all. Unbelievers doesn’t necessarily mean non Muslims. If it did then the prophet would’ve killed the Jews in madinah immediately and not agreed to a contract of alliance. This is further backed up with this verse: “There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.” (2:256 - Saheeh International translation) Homosexuality is prohibited in Islam for one reason, you are disrespecting the lord, which the worst possible sin you could commit. God has created 2 genders for a reason, and when you have a martial relationship with the same gender, you’re basically flicking off to god. I don’t have a problem with non Muslims committing this act, but when you legalize it and make it normal in an Arab country, it’s as if you are flicking off to god as well. But that is your choice to be a homosexual. It’s not something a human is born with, they choose to do that. I would say it’s disrespectful to come into a country, break their rules and say that it’s unfair. If you hate the rules, leave the country. At the end of the day it’s your choice to be gay, and if you want to be gay where it’s illegal, you will pay the consequences. If you want to be gay and not be harassed, go to a country where it’s legal. Homosexuality is also one of the 16 Major sins. I do agree however that they shouldn’t be executed, that’s too much. I don’t personally assault and harass Homosexuals because I think it’s wrong to attack other humans unless it’s to defend yourself or to defend your country in a war. I don’t think it is just to kill them and any Muslim who does kill them is killing an innocent person (Murder in an unjust Manner) which is a Major Sin, I think deportation is fine, but when it’s a citizen of that country it becomes difficult, jail for life is too much, I think they can’t repent if they really want so I wouldn’t personally put them in jail. I condemn the killing of any innocent human (Nationality, Race and sexuality doesn’t affect this decision) Omar mateen has done a major sin, he killed innocent people and he should be imprisoned for life. My belief is that God will punish the homosexuals in the afterlife it is not my duty to kill/ harm or harass them. So my recommendation for homosexuals in the Arab/ Muslim countries is to leave said countries and go to a country where it is legal. There are many countries who accept these people, so they can literally pick where they want to go. Sorry, we are not going to change our rules and religion to apply something that was made prohibited in our religion for 1400 years, if you make it normal in our countries, it will spread and many people maybe Muslims even may sin, and the government will be responsible. If you don’t like the rule, leave the Arab/ Muslim country or pay the consequences of the law. Simple. Because at the end of the day you choose what you want to do with your sexuality, and it’s not like Nationality or skin colour which you’re born with naturally. Don’t ever compare me or any of the 1.6 billion to the 13000 dogs in ISIS. I have no correlation to them and so do the 99.99999% of Muslims who are not in ISIS. ISIS kills all people, both non Muslims and Muslims. So them killing LGBT people is not special. Whatever ISIS do, it is prohibited. Here’s a verse that condemns the killing of innocent people “[w]hoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” (5:32 - Saheeh International translation) Also ISIS Claim they kill people of other religions in the name of Islam. “There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.” (2:256 - Saheeh International translation) Also this is backed up by them killing Muslim Syrians and Iraqis who are not in ISIS. How are they doing it in the name of Islam if they are killing their own people?! This is what Isis is about! Killing innocent people which absolutely prohibited in Islam. They do not represent the Quran or the Muslim community in any way shape or form, especially because they only make up 0.00001% of all Muslims.

when I see how Islam is everywhere even in Oxford University I feel overwhelmed with happiness and joy, thanks be to Allah, HamdulilAllah.

So the argument that justice is intrinsic to Islam, and that violence is prescribed in Islam to uphold justice, doesn't equate to an argument that Islam, a religion requiring that justice be upheld, prescribes violence? Oxford's standards are slipping, I reckon. It is not righteous to fetishize the idea of a law which says that it must be upheld at any costs, including the lives of those who disagree.

I think Dan Kahneman said: 'Of the 2000 (or whatever the exact number is) religions on the planet, what makes anyone so certain that theirs happens to buck the 2000:1 odds that theirs is correct?'
