I'd say that this might be rooted in his cultural background. In German speaking countries we usually don't do small talks that often. In fact, plenty of people find such conversations superficial and meaningless and thus often consider such talks as a waste of time and energy. In more intimate situations like here in this direct back and forth interaction, we prefer conversations with deeper thoughts and meaning that at times require to defend certain statements or set them into relation and context which often is missing in typical small talk where the answer given is more or less pointless as the audience is more interested in a punch line than for the actual background of the story.

I would've loved to watch another hour of these two talking. I absolutely LOVE the way that especially Ralph Fiennes formulates an idea into a few sentences or considers something he's curious about & turns it into words & then g e n t l y gives it a little push out into a little elbow room in the conversation to see what happens. That kind of gentle, hesitant, idiosyncratic way of being in the world is so dismissed & discouraged in our daily life. It's all about aggressive pushy energy & dominating conversations & talking talking talking over others without even listening. I'm a much more hesitant pondering gentle sort of considerer, so it's fun to see Ralph Fiennes do the same. I think it's also conducive to unexpected conversations that usually turn out to be the most interesting ones.

What I like about this particular episode is that, both men taking part in the conversation are highly intelligent and utterly classical. Although, you might say, they have aged decently and thus became so prominent, but that's not true, because they have been like this since their childhood.
Two men whose on-screen personas tend to be quite eccentric and, well, over-the-top, but who by all accounts are in reality really soft-spoken and introspective minds.

Two men who appreciate each other on a secular, intellectual and creative level and have respect for their craft.
Ralph Fiennes is just, for me, one of the all time greats. Pure Qual

my two daddiest daddies of all🥺
I would've loved to watch another hour of these two talking.
Ralph is always eloquent.

Well considering the villainous roles he has played brillantly, you're fear of him makes sense. Also, depending on if you are an American or not, his accent can mentally be differed as scary. This is because of the many western world movie villains have German/Austrian accents. It is very interesting to dive deeper into why we might fear certain things.
