I own a c200x, p400 and a dp57 that I use as DAC and cd player from accuphase and b&w cdm7 NT speakers. I've heard a lot of high end gear. On my 35 I didn't want anything else. Just the sweetness and micro details you get in the sound is in my opinion the best I've ever heard. Also very important the interlinks that you use and the speaker cables. Use high quality! Otherwise you are going to hear it.

Nice review and I agree with you on the "higher-end" Japanese products being in "different" class. In my reference system I have a T+A PA3000 HV integrated and purchased a Luxman L-509X for a second system I needed to put together. The Luxman works fine in my second system but it's not in the same class as my T+A.

I have heard some Kenwood models, but not these particular ones. Inside they look okay. Which I can't say about their newer models. I have only owned a Kenwood CD player. But generally it is a very low budget brand. But I guess these older models, are almost like a whole other brand. Same can be said with many other half suspect brands from around the 80's, where back then they sounded okay, but now it is not nearly as good. I suggest you just keep them.

Having auditioned Macintosh, Accuphase, Luxman, and Yamaha (equivalent models AB, A, Wattages, Features etc) my money is with the Luxman amps. Just over all sound, looks, features and presence. @@RealHIFIHelp Yes they have. I guess I prefer live music, and I find Luxman reproduce the sound closest, given the comparison amongst the 3 in discussion here. I'm sure there will be some cheaper as well as much more expensive brands out there, reproducing similar or even better natural sound. I'm not a fan of tubes or warm sound. But more natural sounding and live. I've seen some of these stage artists use pretty ordinary stage systems /PA systems in clubs and theatres, and live stage sounds great. @@thedroidbha I'd agree. I own the Luxman L-590AXII but didn't get to hear the Accuphase. A friend used to own the Accuphase E600 and Naim and he preferred the latter with his Harbeth speakers. He mentioned the Accuphase sounds good and warm but lacks the sparkle and life of the Naim. I can understand people may prefer the warm glowing sound, almost tube-like especially when the amp is matched to some bright or lean sounding speaker. However, with more neutral or warm speakers, the Accuphase may sound a tad warm or uninvolving. Just a guess. The Luxman on the other hand sounds very close to neutral in my experience having compared it with many solid state amps. It has a very slight warmth being a Class A but not excessively so. In my mind, the Luxman is splendid in both sound quality and looks, and perhaps value too when compared to the costlier Accuphase. The one thing that Accuphase wins is build quality, according to people who have seen both amps in the flesh.

  • @RealHIFIHelp

I have not heard enough Esoteric gear to know the brand enough in terms of general sound. But what I heard which was very little sounded good. Luxman is without a doubt the best value of the 3 comparing to what I heard of those 3 brands. Accuphase is to me more of a certain type of sound and religion that I would say is more for a certain type of customer listening to certain music who usually has more money. I would personally only buy Accuphase if it was something like a e480 integrated with a built in DAC and I got it for a really good offer in Canada where the prices are maybe the best in the world for this brand. When in doubt go for something like the Yamaha 2200 or even better 3200, that is almost better value than the Luxman IMO especially if you have matching gear that is a bit low end. If you have gear to match with this particular brand that is of a higher level, then definitely take Luxman. Remember to buy it from a place that has compatible power standard with the country that you live in. As soon as you use a converter you lose at least 50% of the sound potential. I don't know the history of Kenwood. I have though owned a lot of their older models from the 90ś and Kenwood is just a brand that isn't even close to Luxman, Accuphase in general terms, they usually make the more entry level stuff.

  • @RealHIFIHelp

I would say that they are all about the same. With esoteric being a tiny bit behind them all. Then Yamaha top models and then Accuphase. Difficult to rank Yamaha, because they are so bad with most of their weak models. And only from their 2000+ models do they begin to shake that sound of, and become a lot more like the usual gear from Accuphase. Luxman are fine with their top models just like Yamaha top models and Audio Research. So everything on that list is for me about class c. And that does not mean that they will sound bad. Just that one will have to work with them a lot, to get the good sound out. I would though of all of those brands, generally prefer Accuphase, which many times times will sound a lot better, because it is just generally a much high quality product from low to top models, because it is just a completely different price class. But yeah most of those brands at their top models sound actually quite good, even though I am giving them all a C. That is just because of the competition being so much better.

Second place to Luxman. Even comparing to McIntosh integrated like MA8900 and MA9000, the E480 and E650 (Class A) i think Accuphase is more refined and precise in terms of sound. Build quality is great on both. The aesthetics is completely subjetive... Maybe McIntosh looks more impressive.
