They pronounced it like they did in the Simpson's Streetcar Named Desire parody episode that got everybody here so bent out of shape back in the day. I love how tourists pronounce it in general-- it's or-linz, people!

These days ecologists and behavioural biologists don't really use the term or consider it all that valid any more. Most times wolf packs are simply extended family groups with the elder parental pair occupying the most 'senior' positions in terms of hierarchy. Though fights may happen within packs, there are rarely contests for dominance to the degree that it ever leads to the prior pack leaders being ousted or killed and replaced. Some folks think that the "alpha male" theory was put forward by biologists examining wolf packs that had been put together in early zoos and wildlife parks, perhaps including individuals from different groups that failed to integrate properly as a cohesive family/pack, thus leading to greater amounts of conflict and more violent/frequent contests that actually would change the dynamics of a pack's hierarchy. As for human 'alpha males', that's a distinction that only exists in the minds of the people who choose to call themselves that in order to make themselves feel like they've 'won' at being selfish, aggressive asshats. :D
