The AC130 is cool but is ultimately a terrible weapon system, only useful against extremely weak enemies like isis or the taliban, in which case far cheaper more practical options exist that would have about the same effect.

It's actually pretty crazy to think of how this model came to be. A plane that has artillery on it. Amazing invention, but crazy nevertheless.

Sales pitch: "We're going to take a cargo plane, load it with every caliber weapon that will fit in it, and marry those to a precise day/night targeting system." Sold. BTW, you know the crew is well-trained when they look bored.

My buddy worked on an AC130 crew when he was in the air force. He kept a bunch of those 105mm shells (I think that was the size) cleaned them up, welded handles and made some badass giant beer mugs...🤣 He engraved two of them as a gift at my bachelor party...fuckin great gift.

@@nobilesnovushomo58 Funny thing that. The original AC-130's did not in fact have any dampening system. When the gun fired the whole craft shifted in the opposite direction! The shock absorbers are there now more for crew comfort as well as keeping the gun on target.

Everyone's gangsta until spooky enters the arena

We were flown in to a mountain top strip by a C130. Then we were flown out a few days later. Reving the engines so hard thought they would blow up. We took off and everyone slid backwards, and on the climb the tree tops scraped the bottom of the plane. Best pilots in the world including the Huey Choppers. C130s built in the 50s are still a workhorse of the military. Hats off to the pilots

They fire around 4 shots in certain parts of the orbit, to measure wind. At which point they are calibrated and ready to fire. Anything you fire at is a direct hit, always. As long as the crosshair was on what you were shooting.

no because its not flying anywhere near 20,000 feet. The cabins are unpressurized, they can fly up to around 7,000 feet usually at night to avoid AAA

My dad did 4 tours. He is since passed on. One of best stories he actually shared was how his blood would pump with adrenaline then relief would wash over him when puff came. Puff saved his ass and his men many times.

Does anyone know how pressurization works on this beast? They say it’s an unpressurized cabin yet can reach a ceiling of 39,000 ft. I was trying to search the average (and optimal) altitude range for engagement, but still couldn’t find out what crew does with pressurization at higher altitudes.

For every green tracer being shot there’s at least 500-1000 bullets before and after. The tracers are for guidance-to know where to shoot at night- and they’re spaced every X amount of numbers in between regular bullets. In case anyone was wondering. This gun is shooting 10,000+ rounds A MINUTE.
