Lockheed AC-130 Spectre, Spooky & Ghostrider

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Lockheed AC-130 gunship is a heavily armed ground-attack aircraft variant of the C-130 Hercules transport plane. The basic airframe is manufactured by Lockheed, while Boeing is responsible for the conversion into a gunship and for aircraft support. The AC-130A Gunship II superseded the AC-47 Gunship I during the Vietnam War.
The gunship's sole user is the United States Air Force, which uses AC-130H Spectre, AC-130U Spooky, AC-130J Ghostrider, and AC-130W Stinger II variants for close air support, air interdiction, and force protection. Close air support roles include supporting ground troops, escorting convoys, and flying urban operations. Air interdiction missions are conducted against planned targets and targets of opportunity. Force protection missions include defending air bases and other facilities. AC-130Us are based at Hurlburt Field, Florida, while AC-130Hs and AC-130Ws are based at Cannon AFB, New Mexico. The AC-130s deploy to bases worldwide in support of operations. The gunship squadrons are part of the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), a component of the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM).
All of the weaponry aboard is mounted to fire from the left (port) side of the non-pressurised aircraft. During an attack the gunship performs a pylon turn, flying in a large circle around the target, allowing it to fire at its target far longer than a conventional attack aircraft. The AC-130H Spectre was armed with two 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannons, one Bofors 40mm autocannon, and one 105 mm M102 cannon, although after 1994 the 20 mm cannons were removed for most missions. The upgraded AC-130U "Spooky" has a single 25 mm GAU-12 Equalizer in place of the Spectre's twin 20 mm cannons, an improved fire control system, and increased ammunition capacity. New AC-130J gunships based on MC-130J Combat Shadow II special operations tankers were planned as of 2012. The AC-130W is armed with one 30 mm Bushmaster cannon, AGM-176 Griffin missiles, and GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs.

this really makes it seem like the interior of a c-130 isn't the loudest place on earth. they give civilians riding c-130s ear plugs. they are your best friend. I remember Mac flights on c-130s when I was a kid and my dad was in the Navy...deafening. it makes you appreciate how quiet passenger planes really are

Yes, I had a long ride in a C-130. MAC it was from Gulfport MS to Que Phu Bai in South Vietnam we stopped in the San Francisco area, and then went to Hawaii, Wake Island, Phillipines, and then to Que Phu Bai and it took about 53 hours to fly it, but we had breakdowns in Wake Island, and the Philippineswhich added about 15 hours to the flight time. However, it was better than taking a tramp cargo ship across the Pacific, which I accomplished on my next trip to South Vietnam 3 months later. Please note the three typos that we traveled through, that left our ship powerless for one day. That trip took 29 days, and the food sucked! Even the crew only ate portions of the food. On this trip we had some friendly news, if your in Davy Jones Locker, As the sister ship sank in the Aleutian Chain with all hands lost. In I corps we had Puff-the-Majic-Dragon almost every night, and the NVA moved down the highway about ten miles east of our position. It was beautiful to watch and hear!

Tabasco70 I was returning to West Berlin, via Frankfurt, & the duty train, & caught a hop flight on the group commander’s plane from the refueling group out of the military side of O’Hare airport in 1974, ... the C130 was a fabulous craft, ... holding the double sized fiberglas refueling cells that went from the basement to the roof, it was frigging awesome, ... only time I was jealous of the MOS I chose, for my branch of service, ... lmmo! That crew was great, & I was an E4 with almost 3 years in, & was the least ranking military member on the plane, ... the next closest rank was the guy who sat in the tail, & guided the hose reel out to the jets needing fuel, ... & he was an E-8 if I’m not mistaken, ... I did get to retract the hoses from the 2 jets we refueled just short of the point of no return, ... lmmo! The Group Commander was a very likable person who did not bother with pulling rank, ... he was in charge, & you could tell, that he was, ... no ifs, ands, or buts about it, ... I did my best to stay out of the crews way during the flight, & before we got off of the plane, he gave me a bag of oranges, & grapefruits, ... which I took back with me to West Berlin, ... was offered a lot of things for that bag of fruits, ...lmmo!

Sometimes, if I'm still sleeping during daylight hours and hear a 130 approaching, I'll just briefly wake up and listen to that hum as it passes over knowing full & well what the source of that hum is and that it's just our guys out on a mission.

@@MZ-bl6wg i know you asked months ago, and not to me, but the f35 is meant as a stealth aircraft, the a10 is a flying tank, in terms of armor and survivability the a10, then you need to look at weaponry, the a10 can carry more then twice the firepower of the f35, honestly we need a drone modeled on the a10, possibly with a higher bomb load and more loiter time, i dont see the f35 being a viable replacement for the a10 and while the air force has been trying to get rid of it, the army grunts that it supports will fight tooth and nail to keep it around, when it comes to cas slow and ugly does the job better.

We've all seen the recoil from artilley pieces fired on the ground but to mount a 105mm cannon inside an aircraft is absolutely insane!!! The dampening system on that cannon must be brilliant as you barely see any movement of the Herc when they fire the gun....... only the Americans would be mad enough to do something like this!!! Its interesting that the USAF has changed what's in the toy box on the new Ghost Rider compared to what was carried in the previous AC-130, the only thing that remains is the US made M102 howitzer. They've removed the twin Vulcan 20mm guns and the 40mm Bofors gun and replaced them with a single 30mm GAU-23 Bushmaster ll. To some, it might seem like they have robbed the Ghost Rider of a lot of firepower, however........ the new ramp launched "Gunslinger" AGM's/GBU's and the wing mounted AGM's and GBU's/SDB's make this latest variant of an AC-130 an extremely potent weapons platform and an absolute nightmare for enemies on the ground...... I LOVE IT!!!!!! And I wish we, the British, had a couple of these in our toy box. 🇬🇧🇺🇸✌️
