Absurd day in Kyrgyz nomad highlands 🇰🇬

Welcome to Kyrgyzstan. Although the Kyrgyz people were largely settled into a life of collectivised agriculture by the Soviet Union, some still lead a traditional nomad life. After a hard winter in the lowland plains, these families bring their animals up into lush mountain pastures, or “jailoos”, at the first budding of spring. Kyrgyz nomadic life is built around horseflesh and this relationship gives rise to some practices which are unfamiliar to the Western traveller. I had read about a traditional drink called kumis, which the nomads in their jailoos make from fermented mares’ milk and which is sure to put hairs on your chest. Join me on a quest to sample some authentic kumis straight from the source and follow the many twists and turns of the day.

absolutely loving your videos! what an insight into places you rarely get to see and you do a brilliant job of showcasing these wonderful places. I'm looking forward to seeing more! Have you ever done a Q&A on how you go about your journeys? how much of a plan do you have for trips like this? like did you end up staying the night in Kojokmul? do you ever have to sleep in one of those abandoned trailers?

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the kind words :) I'd do a Q&A if I get enough questions together, but this day went pretty much as planned. After the end of the video, I managed to get a ride to a beautiful village further along the valley called Kyzyl-Oi where I recuperated in one of the guesthouses. I haven't had to do a lonesome bivouac yet, but I'm sure that day lies somewhere ahead...

Honestly, I believe he lifted a horse. What a legend, that Kojomkul.

What an amazing adventure once again! When you got out of the mini-van in the middle of the Suusamyr valley, my jaw dropped, absolutely stunning scenery! Shame you were suffering from the after effects of shoro :) Thank you for telling us of the story of the mighty Kojomkul (and the additional black death info!) Outstanding content. 👏👍

@@JosephMorganYT Sat in the bath ruminating the other day, thoughts of your adventures still fresh. It suddenly hit me, one of the reasons I find your content so fascinating and enjoyable, the seminal "Around the world in 80 days with Michael Palin" !! I remember watching the original series as a kid. I loved seeing far away lands. I think the initial series was a far less scripted, more of a raw slice of life experience, compared to what the genre turned in to. The pacing of your edit, the footage you take, combined with an incredibly articulate and well thought commentary, is just top class. A raw authentic, wonderfully documented, slice of life in distant lands. I should be watching these episodes on BBC1 prime time, I would happily dust off /plug the TV back in for that :) 👏👏👏👍

I don't know how to respond to such generous tub-given thoughts and a comparison to the OG of travel docs other than to say thank you. You're right that I try to keep it organic and unscripted. I can only say that I will try to maintain that sense of authentic adventure and exploration going forward. Once again, thanks for tuning in :)

When you were wandering in the open fields searching for the famous kumis, I was wondering if you'd be joined by a kyrgyz version of MacKenzie to join you on the journey.. I wonder what happened to that beast.

Kyrgyz pastures often contain a very fearsome-looking thing called a Central Asian Shepherd Dog, or Alabai, which I'm honestly quite glad to have avoided :) What a good boy old MacKenzie was though. We wish him well.
