Be Near Me by ABC is a perfect example of the great music we had in the 80's, there was so much new music being released so fast you could not keep up with it all at the record store but soon you would hear it on the radio. We were overwhelmed like a tidal wave. If you got to grow up in the 50's through the 90's with all the golden classic movies, music and concerts, YOU were blessed!

If I recall, that keyboard sound was one of the first uses of what I think was called a "Fairlight" synthesizer. They were so expensive only a few artists were using them. A truly breakthrough beautiful sound.

I grew up in the 80s as a teenager a young adult towards the end of the 80s. Some of the best years of my life. Some of the best music ever. These songs bring back memories I will never forget as long as I live. Thank you 80s.

The 80s was the greatest era of pop music in my opinion.

My god I miss that planet called the 80s

The String/Piano setting on the keyboard utilized in this gem was a perfect application for it within the track. Of course a perfect dose of whimsey.

@@milkbone28681 They were one of those groups that had like a 99.99% pure New Wave sound. The pure pop sound doesn't tend to be popular in America, that market needs something mixed in, like a stronger rock edge or a little R&B/hip-hop or soul, or a softer yacht-rock ballad.

Not sure they were underrated. They sold millions of albums, shows and were featured on top TV shows. They just didn't have super duper long careers like some people (Diana Ross, Madonna, Mick Jagger) It is not easy to stay on top of the charts for decades

Man... I've been saying for many years now that Alive and Kicking is my favorite video from the 80s. But THIS one's near the top of my list too! Delightful to the max. Love how the director knew what details of each person to zoom in on and what angles to use to bring out the essence of it all. Memories of this make you tear up.

F*ck I miss the early 80s. I was a teenager then, and New Romanticism had a huge effect on me. It made me feel that anything and everything was possible. We (I) really need to feel that again, this new millennium so far has been an utter disappointment in my book.

I could see it on sixteen candles...maybe during the scene at the dance or the scene at the party at jakes house...something like that...but then again it would've fitted to the pretty in pink soundtrack...the song is a contender for both soundtracks..to the 80's 🍻

In the 80's, I loved every single song on the radio. Now I last at most 5 to 10 minutes before I turn it off in disgust.

Hard to believe that many people could thumb down a song like this. Ever since being born in 1980, I have remained with all these 80's songs.

I have two brothers who are 6 and 9 years older than me and whatever they were into or did, I was right there for it. I'm grateful for their influence on me, otherwise I would've missed out on practically everything that was happening at the time. I miss the summers spent together at our family's cabin, Air Force squadron picnics, sitting in the living room with my brothers and watching music videos on MTV., my brothers reading their comic books to me and our younger sister, going trick or treating in Air Force Base housing, watching Star Trek the Next Generation on Saturday nights together. I always thought that when we all grew up that we'd all have kids of our own and they'd be close with each other like we all were together and with our cousins. Not how life went, but when I listen to songs like this I'm taken back to how we all were then and it makes me smile to myself.

One of the Best songs of the 80's Wonderful memories and seemed like a Decade when Almost anything was possible.

Martin Frey used to be a client of mine many years ago, after the release of their biggest album at that time, I was always amazed at what he shared were his influences, and it always goes back to Motown and classics, and what I mean classics, contemporary classics from like Smokey Robinson to Roxy Music, he has very eclectic tastes... And it shows with ABCs music

For what it’s worth in 1985 I looked a lot like Mark White especially that I styled my hair exactly like his in the video. And man! did I ever have a lot of success! 😘⭐️

I even had the pleasure of watching their very first video, "Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles, when MTV first aired in 1981. (Man, I'm old!) MTV died in the late 90's when the execs figured people would rather watch the blathering idiots on "The Real World" versus actual music videos. It seems that music in general, including MTV, has gone down hill ever since. Hmmm, I wonder why MTV no longer plays videos, but yet still hosts the VMA's. That's a head scratcher! However, with the sickening, raunchy antics of Miley Cyrus (and her ilk), who would really want to watch the VMA's in the first place? Huh. I believe I've turned into my mother. I sure did sound like her just now. (Ok. Yes, I am officially old.)

I remember when I was a little kid going to shop at k mart when I hear this cool song

I went to a very small private Catholic high school in the 80's and we had a jukebox in the cafeteria. Every day I played Be Near Me by ABC and Take Me Home by Phil Collins. I had to make sure I was one of the first in the room to make sure my choices got played. I'm sure everyone in my lunch group remembers this song. :)

Such a happy song with such sad lyrics. One of the best from the 1980s. Funny it looks like the one guy is holding a cell phone.

Love this tune from the 80's and who just doesn't love how cute Fiona Russell-Powell is.

Great 80s music, wonderful, we used to listen to it, watch the videos on MTV, when they actually showed music videos and not the BS that they show now. It was great, we had fun doing that and built some amazing memories through this music. Timeless music that still brings back all those amazing memories through sound and video.

Brilliant song. Listening to it brings back fond memories of the mid 80’s. That was a great time to be alive.

Because today, singers have to shake their fanny all over the place just like the dancers, and they have to look pretty. Their live viewing audience won't accept the singer not moving like a monkey on stage. It's impossible to sing live and on 🔑 on stage and dance around like a court jester. So.... they don't have to be able to sing. It's not important--singing through a machine (Auto-tune) will take care of that. And a machine takes care of many of the other instruments (synthesizer) Music is recorded in an annoying fashion. All the frequencies on the graphic equalizer are turned up to the maximum. As I said before in a different way---vocal pitch correction is heavily used (Britney Spears). But they use it on people who don't even need it (Michael Bublé). Synthesizers have substituted real instruments. Then you have ghost singing (Jennifer Lopez recordings) and the fact people don't appreciate organic vocal sounds any more. Millenials are weird.. What's super weird is we make stars out of discjockeys. They stand on stage and press their buttons on their machines (spinning records is obsolete, more entertaining, but obsolete) for their digitally recorded music and people in the audience dance Groups used to form organically--now they are formulated by record executives (Backstreet Boys, NSync). Sad , but that is the reality of music today

But it wasn't all 🎉Carefree & Wonderful🎊 if you was like me and most of American's at this time 💸 paying for it was expensive, I had two lovely 💞 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 💞children to pay 💸for and everything that goes along with that ~ 🚗 "🌲🏘 left me pretty worried 🙍🗯almost all the time But got through it all ! yeah I'll never forget those decades how about you ha,ha!

Looking back maybe. But actually there were many worries back then. Still a great decade for sure. Especially in mainstream music. There were more styles and diversity in the mainstream and more artistic expression that was popular. These days there still is, but just not in the mainstream.

This song brings back so many great memories growing up as a teenager in the '80s hanging out at the arcade in the mall and the old teenage nightclub area code 313 in Waterford, Michigan always dreaming and wishing that girls would talk to me! ✨🤩👌🏾

The 80s was the bomb!!!

This takes me back to being a very young child, with out the stress and drama that being an adult can bring. It also rerminds me of my mother who passed two years ago. Sad and happy memories rolled into one song.

My fondest memories are shopping with my mom and listening to the radio on our drive there. So many great 80s songs. She’s gone as well.
