Lyrics:
You always wanted a lover
I only wanted a job
I’ve always worked for my living
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
I come here looking for money
(Got to have it)
and end up leaving with love
Now you’ve left me with nothing
(Can’t take it)
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
I bought you drinks, I brought you flowers
I read your books and talked for hours
Every day so many drinks
such pretty flowers, so tell me
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I…
Since you went away I’ve been hanging around
I’ve been wondering why I’m feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
but I don’t know how I’m gonna get through
How I’m gonna get through
You always wanted me to be something I wasn’t
You always wanted too much
Now I can do what I want to forever
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
At night, the people come and go
They talk too fast and walk too slow
Chasing time from hour to hour
I pour the drinks and crush the flowers
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I...
Since you went away I’ve been hanging around
I’ve been wondering why I’m feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
but I don’t know how I’m gonna get through
How I’m gonna get through
We don’t have to fall apart, we don’t have to fight
We don’t need to go to hell and back every night
We could make a deal
What have I done to deserve this?

Ursprünglich hatten die PSB Tina Turner im Kopf, aber dann wollten sie nicht wegen Tina einen Hit landen, sondern wegen der Musik. Aber ich kann mir auch Tina sehr gut dafür vorstellen. Originally, the PSB had Tina Turner in mind, but then they didn't want to have a hit because of Tina, but because of the music. But I can also imagine Tina doing it very well.

The great, late, Dusty Springfield in duet with Neil. She adds color and soul to it and soars in the second half of the song. I'm so glad the PSBs believed in her and pushed for her to be on the record with them. It brought Britain's most talented female singer back to the spotlight where she belonged. RIP, Miss Dusty.

I remember Dusty Springfield, in a blog, writing about her illness . She suffered from breast cancer. I was very impressed by this. Dusty died in March 1999. Two months after her death, my sister Anneke was diagnosed with breast cancer. A very dark period had begun.... Anneke died in December 2002. Seeing this video makes me feel good. When collaborations between two different artists actually meant something and felt special. This song would have been a smash if the Pet Shop Boys had recorded it on their own, but adding Dusty Springfield to the song immediately catapulted the song onto a whole new level. True and that was also the last great generation of British acts. After that they've produced a few good ones on and off but never a whole generation like the one that came along in the eighties. These days Adele passes as the best Britain has to offer, which says it all.

+Reva Nelson Ah, the salad days of MTV when they played music videos. Now, it`s overrun by stupid `reality`tripe. Ridiculousness (just as moronic as the show`s name) that catfish nonsense and a whole host of programs that don`t cost a lot to make. Yet another reason to wish for the 80`s to come back.

Dusty's voice gets me everytime. Tears and so many regrets of paths not taken but gladness in knowing I get to hear this song when ever I want.
I wonder to what extent people in the 1980s realised they had been living a golden decade for music. I was just a kid back then, but still I can remember some tunes aired at home from tune or played on TV. 1980s music? Definitely my favorite.

I can't say. It was a decade of a lot of good music. Perhaps we were living at the end of a generation that still prevailed in quality, rhythm and lyrics to be successful. Poetry and Melody was necessary. The biggest question however is, why did this end?

The melody is insane.
Dusty was not shown until 1:38 in the video even though she was singing in some parts of the song before then. This shows how legendary she was. They made her scene special by opening a curtain. Dusty was incredible and the best female singer Britain ever produced.
