Abarth 124 SPIDER GT - an overpriced Mazda?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'm taking the Abarth 124 Spider on a stunning mountain ride. Some say the 124 Spider is just an overpriced and overmarketed Mazda MX-5. But is it really so? I was very hesitant about the Abarth 124 Spider, I must say. So is there more to this beautiful car? Come with me to find out!

Amazing review. I was really looking forward to this review after you saying that drove this car and boy you didn't disappoint. I guess you really like the Abarth 124 Spider? It is a gorgeous looking cars, I really like the ones that are white with a black bonnet and boot with red mirrors. But I never drove or test drove the Abarth 124 Spider. I thought you could get the Abarth 124 Spider in a manual? or is it because it's a GT. It looks like a car that should have a manual gearbox to add to the thrill of the drive. Keep up with the great work and all the best. :-)

Great review! First review that didn’t trash the automatic gearbox. I think most people are programmed to hate automatics but this is quite a good gear box when you’re driving it hard. Shifts are quick and aggressive and using the paddles is good fun. Perfectly good alternative to those who don’t want to ( or can’t) drive a manual.

This car would have been more appealing if it had an optional 2-liter turbo engine. That puny 1.4 engine has its place for a balance of economy and performance, but as a top performer, it needs either the 2.0 or 2.3 turbo. Yes, it also needs a 5-6 speed manual transmission.

It's the Italian MX5 :-))... I know you'd have preferred a manual gearbox. But thinking about it, if manuals are so good, how come F1 don't use them? Manuals are good when you're learning so you get the feel of what the car and engine is doing in harmony and partnership. But as you get older, and wiser, autos are easily the better option for the open road. :-))...

Manual Transmissions are for those who prefer to 'drive' their car as opposed to those who who are satisfied to be transported. For those who do not appreciate that distinction automatics are available...

@@devildog5354 - Gotta disagree with you there. I've been driving for 40+ years and I still love driving as much if not more now. But I now see the benefits of autos with or without paddle shift. If you're stuck in traffic, an auto is a god send. But on the open road. That's different. You're coming up to a bend. Tap. Tap. You drop down a couple of gears to steady and slow the car a bit and use the brakes just a tad, and then power out of the bend. It's not that I don't like manuals though, but if given a choice, I'd go auto now as they are so damn good. However, auto's 40 years ago were bloody awful and solely for those who wanted to get from "A" to "B".

After I got back from Viet Nam in 1969, I took a trip to a car dealer in Austin Texas. It had all the Fiats. I liked the 124 Spyder and the 850 Spyder but I was in love with the Fiat 124 Sport Coup. It was that willowish color that the Veloster comes in. Never did even drive one. Thank you for the review. It brought back old memories.

when it comes to cars, there's the 3F rule: no French, no Ford, no Fiat. but there's no need to have any rule for swiss girls (my wife ❤️ would indeed kill me 😄)

Hey hey hey! I AM French! :) Just test drive a Renault Megane RS, and your rule will get down to 2F :) .. and by the way: where are built the most prestigious and performing cars in the world, Bugatti ? Yep, France...

@Fire Heart Maybe because very few car enthusiasts have ever driven a Bugatti... I haven't. Not even sat in one ( I did seat in a Pagani, though...). Hypercars are, by definition, something very exclusive.. I can't imagine what 1500 hp must be like....

@Fire Heart Bugatti is not even properly French so what you're saying isn't applicable.
