Abandoned Koi Pond - Winter Update

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The much anticipated update on the viral video on the abandoned koi pond. Today we are at the pond doing some winter pond maintenance and having a general tidy as well as checking up on the koi and goldfish that were left abandoned last year.

    Most of the big grey ones are 人面鯉 Jinmen Koi fish or human faced koi. they were very popular in the 90's but personally I think they are still really cool. Too many people go mad for nishiki colours but matsuba koi are still really pretty.

  • @Mountain_Aquatics

    I’ve always called them ghost Koi. Are these the same things but with a different name in the UK?

  • @bonsai-effect

    @bonsai-effect

    the ghost koi will usually have defined black markings down the spine, making them look skeletal and they don't necessarily have the human face but can have. IMHO though if theyre commonly called ghost Koi in your country, there is nothing wrong with that. You can get Jinmen Koi in many colours, even some nishiki can get it but its more common in matsuba (solid colour/metallic) koi. I think those grey ones in this pond are absolutely stunning. That was the point of my comment... i watched the draining video and when you said.. nothing special here i was all like NOOOOOO those are so special. lol @@Mountain_Aquatics

    The fish look happy and the pond looks good. With so many fish in that pond a bunch of plants would probably need to be added all at once to keep the fish from destroying them. It might be easier and cheaper to just load up on the water hyacinth or something similar that’s less costly than the lilies and get it established first. After there are other plants established then maybe the lilies might survive. But if it were me, I’d probably add protective enclosures that go around the entire platform and go up to the water surface so that the lilies can get some leaves out before getting eaten. Honestly though I’m almost as much a fan of aquatic plants as the fish so that’s probably why I’d be super motivated to get the plants growing if I had a pond like that. I guess they could sell some of the fish if they really want to have plants in there.

  • @Mountain_Aquatics

    We have suggested a few of those options. They aren’t keep on reducing the fish numbers yet, but want to replace a few of them over time to add some more colour. We may look at some sort of plant enclosure until they’re properly established

    You’re the first one to spot it! So when we first drained the pond (have you seen the original video?) we noticed it and we’re worried it was KHV which can be deadly. We had an expert perform scrapes and under the microscope it did not appear to by KHV. Also if it was then all the other fish would have been infected. The expert opinion was that is was a tumour. It could be removed but that’s risky, and the fish seems to be doing ok at the minute so it was decided to leave it and monitor it

    Good to see the pond being kept maintained, we have some barbel in one of our lakes with the same growths as the koi,we sent 3 samples to the environment agencies lab and that came back as cancerous growths, there is nothing we can do about it apart from monitoring it, the fish seem healthy otherwise and are feeding well so we are just keeping an eye on them

    I noticed it as well and just assumed it was a tumor. It seems like the fish isn't affected by it so as long as it is benign there is no reason to take drastic measures. If it starts to affect the fish ability to swim then they'll probably have to do something about it. Until then the just have a koi with a pom pom. 😊

    They almost certainly would but whether any eggs survive would be questionable. Carp's favorite food are fish eggs. Unless the eggs have a place to hide they're just as likely to get eaten. If the owner wants baby koi and goldfish a few eggs might pull through in a heavily decorated section where there's room for the eggs to hide. Plants could work but goldfish at least love to tear up and eat plants. Not as sure about koi but they're very similar to goldfish, and they're notorious for it.

    Good question! Well firstly we don’t know that it will never have an issue with herons, but so far it hasn’t been a problem. Herons like to land away from the pond and then sneak over so the don’t startle the fish. This pond is built high with high walls so a heron would have to land right in the wall. Also the water is far below the top of the wall. Never say never, but so far it’s working.

    @@Mountain_Aquatics Any lilies and water hyacinth you put in would have to be enormous enough to handle some nibbling. Otherwise I saw that there were some bricks around where the lilies were - might just need to increase the height since it's mostly the roots they go after. Otherwise an alternative to lilies would be lotus. Valisneria can also work (although I've heard some people say their koi and goldfish still ate it - but at least it's cheap and very fast growing). Putting some marginals like rushes, papyrus, Irises, etc. on the plinths would also look gorgeous! I'm personally also a fan of dissuading fish from nibbling on plants by giving them something to nibble on - some large trays full of pebbles that they can fossick through (though granted, they will eventually empty them out and they will need picking up and putting back in), regular feeding with edible plants like elodea and extra pellet feedings so they don't feel so inclined to nom the plants they shouldn't.

    algae/green water isn't inherently bad. Most fish prefer it, especially if they're going to be spawning. It can get *too* bad but this level is probably perfectly fine for them. Once the lilies are established, that will help too. More plants means less nutrients for the algae.

I would say its much much better but if it were my pond I would be wanting it not be so green and almost a year on I would like to see more progress, like plants and rocks ect.
