    I’m not sure of the extent of the ditch you’ve made; but just be sure no run off from nearby fields can end up in it with nasty fertilisers or chemicals that could potentially kill your stock.

    From the start multiple people tried to point out inconsistencies in the process of the dig. The entire area needed to be excavated and then the clay needed to be brought back in and spread/compacted over the entire bottom of the pond. The banks also needed to be sloped correctly and rip rap places around the waterline edge to prevent erosion. You’re learning some expensive lessons. Your fish selection is also going to pose some serious pond damage concerns as well, Carp are notorious for digging and eroding banks, they’ll also muddy the entire pond water as they dig and stir up silt. The topsoil layer could also be sealed using a polymer added to the pond and also bentonite clay broadcasted around the pond edge to seal off the topsoil interface layer.

    Seems a bit of a massive oversight not noticing you had land drains running the length of your pond? That should have been something easy to spot at the initial digging phase also it sounds like who ever put in the clay blanket did a crap job at that too if you have topsoil layers leaking out water.

    A carp water should have a lot of time to establish before even fish going into it. Not enough established foliage around the banks, critical for spawning months has they will cut them selfs on rough banks . On top of this fish will be stressed they need time to settle and nature will create natural hiding spots which make them happy also. A lesson to anyone wanting to do this. Do not rush has you will make more mistakes and you will have happy fish, so will lose less and be richer for it .

    So I've just looked it up and I'm not far off correct, they used what's called a coffer dam or sheet piling.... Basically pile into the sea bed, then empty the water out so they can work inside

  • @davidoldboy5425

    @davidoldboy5425

    25 күн бұрын

    @@philipglancy8593 They do use cofferdams (all one word) and piles, but what our ancestors did long ago was just chuck cement bags in the sea, and they set. Nowadays concrete is usually pumped into a space ready for it with reinforcement and vibrated to get air pockets out. The main point is the chemical reaction, not 'drying' as with paint.

    You can also add additives like UCS from sika which stops fines washout and aids cohesion of the mix and variuous other benefits.This is used on piling in pourous ground to piers and bridge repairs, etc. This would have to be used with a super plas like vs3000 also as you want it wet but not separating, which is key to the reaction not only working but the concrete also having integrity.

    Ahh mystery leaks and erosion, a thing I know all too well. We had some gigantic boulders put in on the windward end of one of our lakes to try and slow the erosion, next thing we knew the lake had dropped 8ft and we couldn't work out whether it was just evaporation from the stinking hot summer or whether we'd sprung a leak. Ultimately it was a bit of both, the excavation work had exposed a seam in the side of the china clay pit which was working its way unseen along the seam to rather confusingly join with the trench for the outflow pipe about 50m downstream from the lake. It took bloody months of digging holes to find out where the water was going

    If you continue to get leak issue or erosion problems have a look at a product called concrete canvas. I used it where I had issues with field drains coupled with erosion and cray fish burrowing. It initially stopped all leaks on its own but eventually water found a way under but I then puddled clay over the top and its been good for a few years now and hopefully many more 🤞
