A Wild Weekend in Millport on the Scottish Island of Great Cumbrae.
After recent trips to Arran and Bute, I had a lot of people telling me I HAD to go to Great Cumbrae and now I see why! Join us as we explore this wonderful island and its surprising town just a stones' throw from the Scottish Mainland.
Filmed over a wild weekend in February 2022.

I spent every summer of my childhood and early teens on Cumbrae, my family had a house in Millport. The ferries would come into the pier in town in those days. I used to cycle around the island every day, sometimes twice a day. Thanks for taking me back to great memories, as I live far away in Australia now.

Spent my early teens here 4 weeks summer holidays every year. The fair ground in the garrison every night, and the bikes that used to be lying outside the amusements as all the kids would be in there, fantastic memories 👌🏻

LOL. My grandmother owned a house on Westbay and I too used to spend my Summers and September's there every year until i was about 18. In the mornings Id go to the sweet shop and then Mapes to buy a trick toy. It was the best! I too live in Australia, Sydney in fact!
We were from Cullercoats near Newcastle Upon Tyne and every summer from 1968 onwards we would go to Rothesay for our holidays with Mam and Dad. Your videos have taken me down memory lane, reliving those magical summers on the Isle of Bute. My Mam called it " balm to a troubled soul" and would cry every time we crossed back to Wemyss Bay for our return journey !! We visited Largs and Millport many times, along with Dunoon. My brother and I had our photos taken on the crocodile rock back in 1968!! Lovely to see it's still there. My brother later owned the angling shop in Rothesay for many years. I LOVE the west coast of Scotland and on a FINE DAY there is nowhere i'd rather be! Forever grateful to my parents for taking us there 😀

Thanks so much for the comment Linda!
All my school trips in secondary school were a sail from Glasgow to Millport. I always had to bring back a wee gift for my Gran. On my very last sail homeward I dropped my bag over the rail into the water. I was in total shock. Everything was gone.I had money in my pocket for the bus home.Apart from losing my Gran's wee gift my flask makeup and food I was mourning the loss of a box of Smarties !
As a nipper I used to spend my summer holidays in Millport, the Garrison was much better in these days with tennis courts, a great wee cafe and duck ponds. Every day was a cycle round the island day, we used to leave the house at 9am and our parents would not see us again till the street lights came on. Watching this video brings good childhood memories flooding back. I now live in a far off city of San Diego.

Thanks so much Euan! What a healthy holiday, you'd be exhausted after that! Sounds awesome though :)
I have been binge-watching your videos for a week or so now, watching in chronological order (apart from 4 or 5 that scatter gunned watched when I first discovered your channel). As someone that would immigrate to a subtropical island tomorrow if I had the means and money to do so, you don't do a bad job in making freezing Scotland an attractive place to visit. What a fantastic part of the world, Scotland is!
Your videos are great. Normal life. Not some nonsense that most people cannot experience.

Great video.Loved it. I'm from Liverpool originally, but have spent the last 17 years in Galicia NW Spain. I f*#ckin' love Scotland. Been there a few times. Highlands, Trossachs, Oban, John o'Groats. I can't wait to go back & spend the last years of my life there one day. My soul home. I love watching your videos going around Scotland. Love from Galicia xxx
I'm also a subcriber from Colorado. Seeing those hats being worn around Scotland made my heart happy!
The ferry doesn’t go straight to Millport because the waters are to shallow and the ferry would get beached. The town isn’t always windy but no doubt in mind that on the island every day there is a windy point on the island. Love Millport and the video Edit: Also in the ritz on the table you have to look for the triangle that isn’t touching any lines. It’s great fun while waiting for you order

The roll on roll off ferry, which now operates, replaced the paddle steamer service from Wemyss Bay and two smaller ferries which used to sail from Largs to the pier in Millport (close to the Ritz). This "roro" service allowed more cars access to the island and of course was much more convenient, but killed many small businesses on the island since stocking up at a supermarket in Largs also became a more convenient and cheaper option. The roro replaced the sail to Millport pier in the 1970's. The paddle steamer Waverly still sails to the pier.
Watching your video again of Millport Steve. I have all your you tube videos saved, so I can refer to them - Most enjoyable!!!
A marvellous journey, expertly filmed and composed - overcoming the weather to bring this experience to all -with humour, a sense of how to convey the feel of a place and of course, inform the viewer. Excellent !

@@steve-marsh - Steve, did you find that the cost of fuel was much different on the island than the mainland?
Steve --- I have watched everyone of your videos from day one and the Millport video has set a new level. Superb effort by yourself and your lovely partner. All your videos are really brilliant but the content and teamwork in this particular one was outstanding. At times you both show your very humorous side and when added to the more serious content is most enjoyable. The fact that you do not attempt to come over as knowing everything about everywhere is so genuine and a very big plus for your viewers. Thank you both for being such a down to earth couple of rising stars on the KZread circuit. May you both be well and happy. --- Robert & Liz.

In the 1950's when I was a young lad .Granny and Grandpa took us 3 boys to Millport for 2 weeks . All the cars parked up near the ferry and everyone hired a bike so kids were safe from motor traffic it was just wonderfull . Im 70 now but still remember those happy days at Millport

Lol, if they waited for good weather to run the ferry in Scotland they’d never leave port! 😂👍🍺
Great to see Millport again..just how I remember it..windy and rainy..lol. Loved cycling down to Largs for a day out from Glasgow as a teenager and taking the ferry to Millport. Great to see the crocodile repainted. Also loving the Seattle Seahawks hat as I live in that area now!

Thanks for letting me have a lovely, lovely day in Millport. The whole family holidayed there for years and years……such wonderful memories! First memories were with”grandma Goldie”. Then Mum and Dad Ferguson and my 3 sisters and myself…Ian and I met there and eventually our children and their wives/husbands came too……….followed by THEIR children (11 grandchildren!!). And loads of cousins ,friends etc.over the years. ……..and now the next generation are following suit. The whole family loved and loves it still…………….it’s that kind of island with many many happy memories ❤. Is the “Derek” who sent the hats Derek Cadzow by any chance??
I love visiting Largs if the weather is good. It has family connections for me as my late Mother grew up in the area. Some of my ancestors on her side, are buried in Largs Cemetery. Largs has the Viking connection due to the Battle of Largs, many years ago, when there was a Viking invasion. There is a monument to the battle, known as the Pencil. It was great to watch your visit to Great Cumbrae and Millport. I did the crossing, several years ago. I left the car at Largs and a bus picked us up on Cumbrae and took us to Millport. Thanks for another great video Steve.

Thanks Sue! All those local residents were very welcoming :)
Decided to go to Largs and Millport as I have not been there for a while. The warm weather helped and got a tan!! I managed to get a through fare tto Cumbrae for £14.70 return which is pretty good. My first trip to Glasgow Central in 3 years, I do love the ferries, the only problem was the bus that takes you to Millport was very busy so I took the executive decision to walk to Millport - 3 miles and walked back - 3 miles and then a cold beer in WS. Millport very busy yesterday but that's good. They should a direct service from Largs to Millport with Calmac.
Sunshine makes everything better. It’s all interesting though, rain, wind, lion rocks, and I like seeing the old architecture too. Thanks again for sharing.

You guys never fail to surprise me! I was enjoying your new video and there you are flying over the anthem of the seas at anchorage in Scottish waters . One of the best cruise ships out there. Good view of Cumbrae we usually visit a few times a year and walk round. We did think about buying the Fintry Bay tearoom many years ago and have often looked at properties over the years. Unfortunately many if not most of the nice big houses have been broken up into flats and imagine there are lots just used as holiday homes which makes it more difficult for the local population. Love the place👍
