If you are ever in Oban and fancy a trip to the islands, you might end up on Mull, or even push out further to Coll or Tiree. And why not, these are all wonderful island adventures. But don't dismiss Kerrera, the closest island of them all and a place full of surprises! Caledonian MacBrayne's smallest ferry will take you there from Gallanach in little longer than it takes to boil a kettle. And when you get there you'll feel a million miles from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. Kerrera may well be Scotland's most underrated island, I'll be honest and say I'd never even heard of it until a couple of years ago. Now it's one of my favourite places in the whole country.

Remember the rolling "r's" Kerrrrerrra! I was in a Polish bar in Bedford a couple of years ago, and the punters kept saying to me "Say arrr"!😀
On KZread, there are many travel clips that try to convey the feeling of "being there" - Steve always has the ability to take you on the journey with him, and discover the location in an informative and friendly manner, that few else can do !

Steve - from the US - my wife and I SO love your videos of our favorite country, Scotland, and all else. Esp. the fact that you allow the places you visit to declare themselves, versus other KZreadrs, who spend most of their time yapping and self-branding. Alicja is a brilliant and adorable companion. All the best from your fans in New England!
My favourite place on earth is Argyll. The colours are so vivid. I love Oban and the west coast islands. Look at that blue sky.

Love this one of Kerrera, old McDougall country. If you go back I would love to see more of Gylen Castle. I've read that JMW Turner, the great painter visited the island in 1831 and did a series of 25 sketches of the castle. Gylen captivated him as it has done many others. Thanks for this beautiful and interesting walk.

We have 250+ channels with our TV package but preferred watching this. We have enjoyed at least four family holidays at Gallanach and often considered taking the ferry to Kerrera, now we know what we missed and hope we get another opportunity. Thanks for posting.

I just discovered you about a month ago, and I'm so happy I did. I'm sitting here outside of Charleston, SC and I was too excited to see your hat! We are going to Scotland for our first time in October, and your videos are making it harder and harder to plan our trip-everything looks so wonderful!
I've never heard of Kerrera, but I have now. What's more you took me there, and I enjoyed it. How about the little 'farm shop' where you serve yourself, make an entry of your purchase, put in your money and take your change. I haven't seen that here in Australia for over fifty years. Once in a tiny service station where I served myself on the honour system, and in little farmer's fruit and vege shop. I've enjoyed a few of your Scotland videos and shall continue to do so.
One of the best edited and put together, easy and fun to watch videos exploring sites I have seen. You documented things well... gave perspective... and didn't cut so fast my head was spinning. The moment where you ran down to the rock really changed the perspective on the image in a way that couldn't have been achieved any other way.

I would love to visit the places you video. I didn't realise that the Scottish islands were so accessible and so beautiful. A photographers paradise I reckon.
Went on holiday with my parents to Oban as we often used to (my Mum was in the Services and there for the duration the second War and had many friends there) and one time we took our boat (around 1955), only a wee one with an outboard and circumnavigated the Island (of Kerrera) . The one thing I remember so clearly was seeing the many seals basking on the rocks, still have a photo of them, and my father also pointed out the concrete slips where the boats were hauled up during the War. Thanks again Steve, brings back happy memories. Heck, how much longer to the Ice Creams!?!?
You can almost smell the sunshine and fresh air!

My dad told me about how beautiful the place was. He flew a Mustang for the RAAF (Australia ) in an RAF squadron. They used to train up there, and he loved every second of that part of flying. They harassed some Golfers at St Andrews at a very low height golfers diving for the ground. He travelled a lot with his work during the 70’s & 80’s . Always headed to Scotland for a few days with my Mum (a Londoner) if he could. Mustangs were fast so he covered a lot of Scotland. Did mention Loch Ness amongst other places.
What a lovely place, so peaceful and tranquil. The marina on Karrera was a seaplane base during WW2. I'm glad you and Alicija enjoyed your ice cream! 🍦🍦

I have just watched this. I want to go on exactly the same routes. It is so beautiful. ✌️🎈
Memories, memories. As a family of 4 we crossed to the island to do the Island circumnavigation walk many years ago (perhaps 1(80 ish). We had to flip a request board to call the ferry, it was just a small launch. Part of a great visit to Scotland, memories that last a lifetime.
A place I have never been, to be honest, I never knew you could go there! What a place to live, it would suit me down to the ground, but maybe not in winter.
Four minutes? That's quicker than the Woolwich Ferry! I wish we had surroundings like this, too. Once again, Steve, you've found a fascinating subject for one of your very personal-style "blogs", and thanks for bringing it to us. A breath of the Western Isles while we're still restricted in our travel options. I remember my first visit to Oban in 1983 when we were taken by the skipper/owner of the "puffer" VIC32 for a day's cruise aboard the PS "Waverley". We sailed down the Gulf past Kerrera and south to pass through the whirlpools of the Corryvreckan between the north end of Jura, and Scarba before returning to Oban.. We returned some years later to take a three day cruise aboard the last of the"traditional" CalMac ferries, "Columba" on her sailings to Colonsay, Mull and Iona, and Tiree and Coll, the year before she was withdrawn in favour of the big Ro-Ro boats. She's been reincarnated as the "Hebridean Princess", received Royal patronage, and her cruises are far more expensive than the modest £70 we paid for our "full board" passage back then!. I know the Harbour Bar in Oban well, with its extensive range of malt whiskies shelved behind the bar, but I never knew there was a Kerrera ferry!

Went on a little boat out to kerrera marina from Oban to have a lovely meal on the island. The boat journey was a wonderful way to travel out for your supper. Thanks Ellen :)
7:10 "I like that boulder. That's a nice boulder." Thanks for the video - really enjoyed it! Each one I watch seems better than the last. Your channel continues to showcase all the wonders Scotland has to offer. I've recently moved to Edinburgh, and as a lover of the Great Outdoors, I'm very keen to get exploring. Keep the videos coming!

Cheers Jacob and welcome to Auld Reekie! (not a day for the outdoors today though eh?!)
Stunning island.
We enjoyed that. Beautiful little island and bound to get a few more visitors thanks to your film 👍
