A very honest chat about MEDICATION STIGMA and why I started

As it's Mental Health Awareness Week, I wanted to make a video on medication stigma and answer your questions!
I started the #PostYourPill campaign to try and end medication stigma and to show people that taking medication is nothing to be ashamed of. I hope you find this video helpful and please do feel free to leave further questions in the comments! Happy Mental Health Awareness Week 💙

I am psychologist and i take medication for anxiety after years or trying every therapy under the sun. In my profession there are such a strong stigma with medication. But sometimes is necessary and it is an act of selfcare to take them. Thank u for what you are doing

I have been listening to you and watching your journey for ages. So amazed about all that you are doing. Thank you for talking about your mental health journey and your work on fighting the stigma re medication. I have always been afraid of medication. Though I endured trauma for many years, I only got the nerve to talk to someone over a couple years ago about how I have been feeling. It is an uphill climb. I have wondered if, even though I’ve had therapy, I should really consider medication. Up to this morning I endured a panic attack after recently experiencing major triggers. Listening to you has helped me work through finally deciding to better managing my health. Thanks again for all you’re doing.

Duloxetine, Buprenorphine Slow-Release Patches, Propantheline Bromide, Levothyroxine, Oramorph Liquid, Propanalol, Naproxen, Prochloperazine and two others I can’t remember the names. Oh and Betnovate Scalp Application (also useful for putting on the skin prior to applying Trans-dermal patches as it prevents irritation from the patch, in my experience).

Thanks Dr Alex. Great video. I’m in my 60s now and have needed depression medication since the 80s. The only type that keeps me well is Tranylcypromine, an MAOI, it can be such a great med for many people but there’s no profit in it and the big pharmas ensure that it’s not even known about by younger generations of doctors coming through. An Australian doc called Dr Ken Gillam works hard to try and ensure a supply worldwide, more knowledge on that family of meds, and more usage as it is so effective. It would be so great if you could take a look at his internet pages and KZread videos. Self help is so important too..understanding what your mind/body are doing and the vast array of feelings and symptoms involved. . Education is everything with mental health and there are so many resources. NHS silver cloud is just one of them. Thanks Dr Alex for all your work. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Kudos to you for admitting you are on meds. I think this will really help people as you are a doctor yourself and see it from both sides. I know of quite a few psychiatrists who are on meds themselves so it is not unusual. I agree with you, meds should be combined with therapy but in my daughters experience of NHS hospitals, therapy is non existant unless you can pay for it privately, as a result patients tend to be over medicated which is not good. Feedback for your channel :- I personally don't like the YT shorts and don't bother watching them as they are too short to be bothered with IMO. There's Tik Tok for those who like that kind of thing. Maybe it's because I'm older, but I really prefer a longer more in depth video, even if it's only for 15-20 minutes.

I wish medical schools taught their students just because a patient is on anti-depressants they are not stupid so it is ok to talk to them like an adult not like a 5 year old venlafaxine is my med

Medication is fine but medication that hurts people because of side effects being severe is unethical and I think we need to do better for people who need help. We treat every disease with bandaids it’s time we find cures with science I feel for anyone here who needs pills, I have persistent occipital neuralgia and ptsd, my mission is to find a cure and participate in clinical trials. I’m tired of sexual dysfunction, akathisia, blurred vision and twitching muscles lol
