I live near Chicago in the United States, and my local mall is not nearly as big. The prices were comparable for a lot of items, however. I also just got back from taking my 9-year old daughter and my 10.5 yr-old niece to the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN, which is a fairly spectacular experience - there are roller coasters and an aquarium inside the mall! The Mall of America was on the more expensive side, but that is because it is pretty touristy. Thank you for taking the time to show us a mall in Yakutsk, I found it really interesting!

Hello! I live near the Mall of America and growing up, it was one of the malls I would go to with my friends. We didn't have the money to go to the roller coasters or anything, but we would walk around in circles a lot, buy some snacks and maybe go to a bookstore. I went back to do some Christmas shopping this year and had a lot more trouble navigating than I did as a kid, probably because of the crowds. The prices have gone up a lot from when I was a kid as well, though most of what I bought back then was food. The other malls around here are pretty small, especially compared to the MoA.

I think the food at the food court is pretty expensive considering local wages and spending power, maybe because of the remote location so everything has to be shipped in, hence spiking the cost. I think it is good that most Sakha/Yakuts outside of the main city have other self-sustainable methods of farming, fishing, foraging etc. so they can get food from nature.

I dont think so that is the case. As I have mentioned in my other comment. Outlets in malls are expensive irrespective of the regions.I am from Punjab state of India, which is called food basket of India as we grow a lot of grains and cereals. We are not in any war zone. still we pay huge money to shop and eat at malls.

@@aashishgaurav1 Here in Singapore it is also more expensive to eat in malls, compared to eating food sold outdoors (in what we call hawker centres or coffee shops). Restaurants in malls are definitely a lot more expensive, but food courts in malls are priced only about 20% more expensive than the food in hawker centres. I think Yakutsk's food courts in malls are expensive because it cost US$6 for the tea and slice of pizza which is actually even more expensive than what I would expect to pay at a food court here in my country. This is despite the much greater purchasing power and higher salary we have here in Singapore, even compared to say major cities in Russia like Moscow or St Petersburg. I don't think the high prices are caused by sanctions either, but rather the extreme remote location of Yakutsk. Since the city is not connected to other parts of Russia by railway or road (I think the only way in or out is by air).

thank you for new video :) i live in a small town in Poland and we only have one mall, there is only one floor, one bookstore, one stand with pastries and sweets, two shops with variety goods (cheap things imported from china, clothes, electronics, house inventory like plates and cups, pet care like bowls or collars). The rest is clothes and shoes. in small towns, private stores standing separately are more popular than malls

Years ago we built an off grid cabin where temps went down to -55 f. The chimney smoke was a frozen column in the sky. Not having the necessary survival skills we enjoyed the experience then fled back to the city. We lasted one winter, barely. Manual living is not for the faint of heart. Great uploads! Wow, I was actually shocked at how much the prices compared to my city. But the food court was much better. I could eat Korean food all week. Kimchi, Bulgogi, Bibimbap... okay now I'm hungry and won't be able to eat for another 16 hours. Also, thank you for the video... Actually, for the states, those prices are on par or better than here actually. Thanks for showing us this, we need to cone and visit more of your land. And your mall is quite similar to malls here, tho in America, more indoor malls are shutting down and what's popular are outdoor malls that are built like small town with streets, offices, shops and apartments together

Not a lot different in the UK. Like where you are some things are cheaper. Amazing that a Macbook is cheaper in this far away place than in my home town 70 miles from London. I wonder if there are subsidies or lower import taxes involved.

In the USA most of the malls are shutting down or converting to a new format. We have an "outdoor mall" here, which is really just a collection of strip malls made to look fancy. I personally like real indoor malls with food courts, arcades, clothing stores, and anchor stores on the edges. Sears is pretty much gone everywhere. It used to be a common anchor store.

Sure, but the median household income in Russia is 11, 700$, according to Gallup. That's less then 1/6 the median household income of the US.

@@kristalkristal2506 Not only that. In reality, more than half of Russian workers earn in between USD 300 - 600 / month. That's less than Thailand, or similar countries. If we look at the median incomes in St. Pete or Moscow, and compare this figure with the 60 % who live rural, that will be a 2 to 3 times difference. Of course, living rural also needs lesser dough.

An interesting video Maria, thank you for posting. Compared to the UK the jewellery was much cheaper but the electrical goods were generally much more expensive, although the MacBook was a similar price. Food and clothing were similar in cost. However, it is difficult to compare the prices without considering average earnings. I suspect that in real terms the prices were generally higher as a percentage of average earnings than in Britain. Look forward to your next glimpse of life in Yakutia. Take care.

The mall looks similar like we have here in Finland. Prices looks similar too. Electronics, like this laptop looks like more expensive there than here. Fast food and clothes the prices are quite same. Jewellery tho looks like much cheaper, depends of the material of course.

Many malls look the same in Sweden, but most in my country don’t have big stores with household appliances - they are usually located in an industrial area next to big stores that sell e.g. wood, furniture, fabrics, plants, alcohol (we only have one alcohol store in Sweden since we have alcohol monopoly), and groceries. Also, most Swedish malls don’t have one single food court with all restaurants/cafés in them - they are rather spread out, and the seatings are usually not in a common area but inside each restaurant/café. Love this type of content & greetings from Sweden! 😍

Yeah but it's not just that one chain of "alcohol selling" stores. It just that Systembolaget is the only one allowed to sell the stronger stuff and wines and spirits, strong ciders. Regular 3.5 % beer sold everywhere in supermarkets is perfectly fine and absolutely fine to get drunk on, infact it's my main beer of choice! 😁

In Australia our smaller malls don't have things like appliances and furniture, but the big ones with over 100 stores sometimes do. Our malls also almost always have both food courts, where the food is supplied in booths and there is seating for all of them in the center, and restaurants/cafes with their own seating inside spread throughout the mall. The difference is usually that the food courts have things pre-cooked and ready to simply buy and take, and the spread out restaurants have things cooked to order.

Seeing glimpses of life and culture in your part of the world is fascinating, thank you for sharing!

Honestly this part of the world is a hidden gem. I’m an American who moved to Siberia Russia it’s like another world in itself. Isolated but connected to the western world and very peaceful.

at least the mining resources are enjoyed by the local community too, not only just mined and then sent to other areas but the local community does not enjoy any results.

If Yakutia works like America, probably the last place to go shopping is at a mall -- prices higher because of extra cost of being in a mall, selection of goods more limited because of company chain stores prices. But OTOH, it's the only place to shop when it's -40º!

Yeah.. does not realy surprise me that foreign goods are more expensive give the logistics and shipping plus the captive market, but obviously home grown industries outcompeat like the jewelry. Likewise with food easier for chains than bespoke resturants. Still it was enlighting to see how just being practical you can deal with the cold. The double atrium is a brilliant and elegant idea and could be done by any country, only they don't. They'd rather spend a fortune on heating instead. Seems Malls there and in America are very similar even down to the food court selections of usual pizza, hamburgers and french pastries. Only difference I could see is most malls in American don't have 7 floors. Usually one or two floors. Maybe one day I can see for myself the differences. lol

The prices are comparable to California, so yeah, expensive. It’s amazing the architectural differences Yakut has due to the extreme winters.

Quite a contrast from your usual rural farm videos to this. In most places in the U.S., many indoor malls have gone out of business. Less heating and cooling expenses, plus the stores in the outdoor centers are closer to where you park. More and more of our purchases are on-line. Amazon delivery is so incredibly fast and very easy to return items. Love your smile - your area of Russia seems to have more genuinely happy people than I see in other Russian KZread videos.

Same in Russia. Online shops have a lot of domestic (=cheap) goods and you can order home delivery and buy out your purchase in a pick point near your house.

I think that prices are more or less the same as in Italy and in the other European Western countries (except for electrical goods, as here in Italy and Europe on the whole are more affordable). Then It depends on the average salaries, the cost of living. In my region and more specifically in Turin, my city, there are similar grocery shops. They are very helpful, as you can find everything you wish in one place and especially in Yakutzia, where winters are really cold, these huge malls are truly important. Thanks a lot for sharing this awesome video and wish you a nice weekend.

I am very much surprised to see in your video that most, if not all, of the prices for the products you showed are the same as here in Los Angeles. The clothing, electronics, and luxury handbags are the same prices. The only difference is that jewelry in Yakutsk is very much cheaper! Thank you for posting your life in your city. Thanks for the video. The prices look about right for most large cities in the world I have been to. So, while they are expensive, they really are about the same as Canadian, American or Scottish cities. The local wages are lower but everything has to be shipped in. Even so, the prices are about the same as in other cities that have much easier transportation.

I'm in the southern United States, in one of states that is considered very cheap with low cost of living and those prices seem to be on par with ours. Except for the jewelry!! That was fantastic! Loved seeing that style of mall. The one like that, that I visited as a child was knocked down last year and an Amazon fulfillment center is going up. I'm not a fan, but I still have Prime, sigh.

Indoor farming, is starting, all around the world. The opportunitys, are enormous. Fresh vegetables, all year around. Thank You, for your videos.

I love malls so I really enjoyed seeing yours. I live in south Texas and we don’t usually get very cold winters. Our mall is outdoors. It has maybe 50 stores and several restaurants. Edit: I’d love shopping at all the jewelry stores at your mall.

I love American-type strip malls, they're unique and have a homey feeling to it, compared to superluxurious marbled-flooring malls in Malaysia, which is quite common here.

We're on different sides of the world (East Coast, USA) but our malls look almost exactly the same! The prices at your mall didn't seem too bad to me, especially the clothes. $33 for pair of jeans seems pretty reasonable!

Yep East Coast here, too and was thinking the same! I can't judge on the designer bags/shoes, but most of the other items seemed about what we pay, including the food. The average salary seems to be much lower than anywhere in coastal US though, so that probably explains why it's all actually expensive.

The clothing is comparable to eastern Pennsylvania USA but those shoes are expensive! But we have expensive shoes here too. Beautiful and clean mall there. Would LOVE to visit there some time.
