A TRADITONAL GERMAN CHRISTMAS: DECORATIONS & SWEETS YOU NEED

A TRADITONAL GERMAN CHRISTMAS: DECORATIONS & SWEETS YOU NEED// Hello everyone, We're slowly getting into the festive mood so Joerg and I thought we would share some new additions that we got for our traditional German Christmas 2021 here in the UK. I just returned from Germany and brought home some lovely baubles and decoration from beautiful brands in the Ore Mountains that have a huge tradition when it comes to German Christmas decor. We share what makes Christmas special for us, what we think belongs to a traditional German Christmas and what sweets you need in your house. Hope you like the video.xx
ADDITION: Lauscha is actually in Thuringia whereas the Ore Mountains are in the region of Saxony Germany. We had a hard time with the camera set-up for this video and were so happy that we managed to film this episode in the end. Both Joerg and I were quite exhausted and unfortunately made this mistake.

Tradition for me is hanging all my grandparents' Christmas stuff on the Christmas tree. Like you, I like a traditional tree and the Christmas balls I have are very old, but I wouldn't trade them for anything. They bring back so many nice memories. The figurines for the nativity scene belong to my mom. I occasionally buy old Christmas balls that I find at flea markets or drift stores.

I have many ornaments and figurines that were my parents or that my parents gave me. They will always have a special place on our tree or placed around our home at Christmas. I cherish them. We have many beautiful German ornaments as our daughter worked in Germany for a couple years.
Kirsten I see how much you missed Yoerg because I see his hand on your hand like my husband does often with me.I wish you to be always happy together. Thank you for the beautiful Christmas decorations it makes me dream about my childhood
50 years ago my husband and I were too poor to afford expensive ornaments for the tree, so we bought wooden ones and painted them ourselves. They are on our tree every year. We still love them and so do the grandkids.
Joerg looks so happy to have you home, I think he missed you very much Kirsten, but now you can both look forward to Christmas. Lots of memories with the decorations of my Grandmother's tree, looking forward to seeing your new ornaments on this years tree.
Me as a German I'm absolutely obsesesd with Raeuchermaennchen, we even have a Scots Man and a Fisher Man 😁😁. The stuff from the Erzgebirge is top notch, it's the cradle of christmas decoration. We have a huge pyramid and I can't wait to light it this year. Thanks Kirsten and Jörg 😘

I loved learning about the German traditions. My next door neighbor growing up had a pyramid and as a child I loved looking at it because it was not a familiar decoration.
I am glad that you are together again. Is starting to look like Christmas, and I am watching this video right now. Blessings. 🎅🤶
What gorgeous ornaments. We always have a multi colored tree, lights and ornaments. When our boys were young, we had two trees, a real one that we cut down, for our dinning room and an artificial one for our living room. For our real one, we would make our ornaments, colored paper chains, and home made cookies to hang on the tree. Most years, we had as is called here a Charlie Brown tree. Not a perfectly shaped tree and with holes within the branches. It would get decorated and it was beautiful to us.
Two of my favorite things! Christmas and a Kirsten & Joerg video. The two combined makes me so happy!! Thanks for sharing your traditions. Such fun!!🎄❤

My husband and I lived in very rural country for 30 years. We bought 35 acres, all wooded, except for an area we cleared for our homesite. Every year, beginning in Fall, we would go out daily, hiking and exploring, just to be enjoying the beauty of seasons. We collected hickory nuts, walnuts, pinecones, and dried thistles, seedpods, and thin, curly twig branches. We put the nuts in wooden bowls, with nutcrackers nearby. I would use paint spray to turn thistles gold or silver, the pinecones snowy white, the seed pods left their softly faded, natural colors. The curly twigs were sprayed with a light dusting of glittery soft white, as if ice was on it. We waited until Dec. 1st, to cut or find windblown evergreen branches laying in the snow. I brought them inside to be made into swags and wreaths, adding pinecones, seed pods and a big plaid bow. We had planted holly bushes around our home, so I did vases and swags of evergreen and holly, also tucking in the golden thistle and the curly frosted twigs. The live wreaths hung inside and outside our front door. Swags of holly and evergreen that I wired on a rope, draped all along our farmhouse front porch. Small vertical swags hung down inside, within each window,, while a cranberry red wax (battery) slender pillar candle in a tall wooden holder sat on upper windowsill. I used "snow spray" to frost the window at edges. It was so cozy and welcoming. I am a widow now, and moved into a town neighborhood. But I have holly bushes and two evergreen trees ...around my home. I still decorate in this old fashion way....

Thank you! There is nothing more magical or whimsical than a traditional German Christmas! We celebrate Yule on the Winter Solstice. In addition to handmade blown glass and wooden ornaments, our house (inside and out) is decorated with natural cedar bough greenery, wreaths, pine cones and acorns, mistletoe, holly and ivy. On the actual Solstice, we have no sources of artificial light, only candles, and real wood fires. Everything is handmade, and hand-decorated, including the food, sweets, and gifts. Each year, one special ornament is added to the tree. I still have several magnificent decorations from my childhood Christmas' in Germany.

My husband and I will be married 49 years in January. I have collected Christmas decorations from the first Christmas. Whenever we travel I always buy something new for Christmas. I also have a angle that was always on the top of my tree, when I was a little girl. Special memories like you have.
You both have gotten me into the Christmas spirit! And I thank you! Can't wait to see this year's tree!!!

Yes, my family here in Germany (Lower Saxony) decorates with lots of wooden art from the Erzgebirge: Pyramids, Schibbögen/candle archs in nearly every window, nutcrackers, smokers, miners and angels and the musical box which plays silent night. And of course we have a self-bound Advent wreath with four bee wax candles. A huge (villeroy&boch :-)) christmas plate has a place in the living room with Lebkuchen, Dominosteinen, Spekulatius, mazipan and lots of christmas cookies in many shapes baked and decorated by the children. The christmas tree we fell in the forrest and it gets red or white glasballs from Lauscha, straw stars and some Erzgebirge miniature hangers, but isn't too colorful. Outside the house we have the big Herrnhuter star. Now I am in a christmas mood. Thanks for your wonderful videos!

There are a lot of the German Christmas goodies that I have been introduced to and are hard to stop eating! One of the things I remember as a child was my grandmother’s Christmas tree that had Bubble Lights. For those who haven’t seen these ,they resemble a string of glass candles with a coloured liquid that bubbles when the bulb warms the liquid up. They are still available today and gives the tree a retro look Take care and happy tree decorating 🇨🇦 ❤️

Being of French Canadian heritage, one big tradition is Tourtierre (traditional pork/beef pie) for Christmas breakfast. I've been vegetarian for quite some time so it'll be made with Impossible burger here at my place. I also love bubble lights. We had a small tabletop tree with bubble lights when I was a child and I loved it. Now, I have a few bubble light nightlights that I plug into the kitchen outlets at Christmas. Your decorations are so beautiful. I have a small pyramid, bought it years and years ago.

You are very fortunate to have a husband that appreciates all those beautiful decorations. My husband is Cuban, he grew up during the revolution so they never really knew Christmas and he still asks me to thia day on which day Santa brings the gifts 🤣🤣🤣
I have Christmas ornaments and decorations from my parents and grandparents from both sides. They bring back the best memories each year and are stored separately to be handed down someday.
I was born and raised in Germany and now live in the USA - I keep for my family all our German traditions alive and of course, implement some American traditions my husband grew up with. I just got done putting the kids' advent calendars up and filled and all is ready for St. Nikolaus to come on 12/6 - we are excited for the Christmas season
I was 63 this July and I have ornaments from Germany that came with my ancestors, giant hand paint glass balls and some indent, those are so fragile, I just love them. We had a pyramid when I was a kid, it was mesmerizing. There's a huge garden center near where I grew up, I told my brother I wanted to go next time I'm visiting, they have trees decorated with ornaments from around the world, I'm hoping I can find some nice ones like yours, as well as hoping Aldi having some of those treats =^)

We get together on Christmas morning (23 of us) for a huge Christmas breakfast. Then we have our gift exchange, play games, listen to music. If there’s snow some go sledding. I lived in Bitburg in the 1950's when my father was stationed at Spangdahlem US Air Force Base. We were there for 4 years and we loved this area of Germany. We came home to the US with hundreds of Christmas ornaments. We had many of the items you showed, but alas many broke in transit and my sister and I dropped quite a few. There you go again...taking me back to the years our family spent in Germany. I have to say the only place that is better than Vieux Quebec at Christmas, is Germany! In Germany we have the concept of Aussteuer. Things you collect for your daughters when they get married. (sheets, or cutlery for example) We made a Christmas Aussteuer for our daughters. Since they were born we bought every year a special ornament for the Christmas tree. When they moved out (we didn't wait for a wedding) they had this wonderful collection of Christmas ornaments. Best idea we ever had.

Ahh such sweet memories from my daughter's Oma (on her Dad's side) - stollen, candle pyramid, and chocolates filled with orange liqueur - yummm!
I'm from Argentina, South America. Here Christmas it's VERY hot (like 38° Celcius degree) and because of that saddly we didn't have the great culture of food that nordic countryes have. We eat cold meats and rolled beefs with creamy dressing, and a lot of diferents salads with vegetables and fruits and also do barbacues in the outdoors. The ones who have a pool in their houses sit on their tables with swimwear and flip flops! (hilarious but comfy). Mostly we celebrate the night on 24th, and since like the majority of us decent from an European ancester (Italian or Spanish) we use to have a larger partys or reunions with all family and friens that we can gather and, of course, TONS of food and drinks (Fernet, Daikiris, Gin&Tonic, Caipirnhas etc.) and of course A LOT of music. Then we prepare the lunch of 25th, we don't care for the morning because ours partys in the night before are very cheerful and long, and also "Papá Noel" or Santa come to us at 00:00 of 25th, so the children can open they gifts in the night and go to the bed with they presents. The only tradition that survives the years and the weather it was to make the toast of 00:00 with a christmas bread (italian panettone) and apple cider, maybe you can find a praline nougat on a table but is not that common. The sweets that we eat are fruit salad, ice cream, chocolate dipped peanuts or raisins and the national dessert of christmas for us: MANTECOL (a sweet made of peanut flour, butter and honey - inspired on a greek dessert called halvá o chalwás). I absolutley love your channel, you are the nicest people! I adore the elegance that you both have, specially Kirsten and I also love when Joerg show, tell and try all the candys and sweets, He have the joy of a children!!! I really enjoyed your video, which I watched today (Dec. 7th - a bit late), with all your lovely decorations and delicious food. I haven't tried some of those. I am partly Dutch so my traditional Christmas is a mixture of English and Dutch. We also have speculaas at Christmas and this year my cousins have sent me a chocolate letter in the shape of an S for Stella and some papernoten biscuits. These are eaten at SinterKlaas on Dec. 5th in Holland. My English traditions include listening to the 9 lessons and carols from Cambridge in the afternoon on Radio 4 at 3 pm on 24th, followed by mince pies, sausage rolls and Advocaat on Christmas Eve, preferably whilst watching a thriller film on TV. We leave a glass of milk and a mince pie on the grate for Father Christmas, in case he visits our house. Our Christmas tree decorations have been collected over the years and each one has a special significance. Every year we buy 2 or 3 new ones. This year is was a pair of angel wings because we lost our lovely cat this year. I will remember her each year when I dress the tree and put her wings on it. Thank you for sharing your traditions.

Greek kourabiethes, are my favorite traditional Christmas treat. Many countries take credit for these high-butter content, toasted almond cookies that are covered with powdered/confectioners sugar. Here in the US, they’re often rolled round and called Italian wedding cookies, but our tradition is rolled-out, flat diamond shapes. These are nearly impossible to make in a warm house, the dough is so tricky to handle, so we make them in the winter only. Some put bourbon in them, we like pure vanilla instead.
Добрый день ! Игрушки очень красивые .

So glad you like it!
I am so grateful for all your shares on German products, specially the traditional ones from the Erzgebirge, which I didn't know of. As a German who grew up in Italy, I have always followed the German Christmas traditions, which my mother loved. And so do I 😍😍
Hello from Houston, Texas. You both are adorable, I am enjoying watching your videos. I never knew that the propeller on the wooden pyramids moved on their own by using candles. Now it makes sense, thank you.
All these wonderful German cookies and candies remind me so much of my childhood. My mother ,being German, had all of the Christmas decorations like you have. I always loved the decoration where the candles, when lit, make the angels go around the top. But ours was gold metal. Thank you for making my memories seem real again.❤️
Absolutely beautiful xo thank you sharing 🎄
My moms side of the family is German and there's nothing as beautiful and the vintage glass blown ornaments. I have just a few of them and I get so excited when I put them out because there are nothing else like them in style and meaning. Thanks and I can't wait to see your tree again this year.

Live in NY am half German and British/Irish and decorating the tree 🌲 is very important and lucky to have ornaments from my youth but still buy a few every year even though I’m 60+. My German grandmother’s Christmas tradition was to make her springerle cookies every Christmas and loved how she used her old rolling pin with the wood block pictures. Merry Christmas 🎁 to you both!!
All of these decorations are stunningly gorgeous! 🌹🌹
My great grandfather from Wales was a glass blower. He relocated to Elgin, Illinois outside of Chicago.
