As someone who has experienced the exact same overdose, I find it uncanny how accurately you describe the resulting delirium. This is just one reason why you're great at what you do, it makes the information all the more valuable. What you said about the diphenhydramine staying bound up in the body and causing long term effects.. that addressed something that no other doctor was able to prepare me for or give closure in regards to, since then, because the effects of an overdose like this seem to last indefinitely. Very interesting case. As a Paramedic, I had a patient who overdosed on acetaminophen on Christmas Day. She was very depressed. She was unconscious, and combative; she managed to punch me in the jaw. I almost thought she was faking. In fortunately, I never learned her out come. People don’t realize when they take over the counter meds they can be really serious, or even fatal. I wish I could have found out whether she was really suicidal.

I have had an OD to Benadryl in the ER before because I was given an incorrect dose during an allergic reaction (I still don't know how they managed that in the first place). it was so terrifying. A lot of the symptoms that were mentioned here were very similar to what happened to me. I cannot imagine 2 freaking bottles of it DX

The theraputic dose for a severe allergic reaction is 100mg. And up to 300mg in 24 hrs. And you aren't supposed to drive for 24 hours after a 100mg dose.

I actually had an attempt on the same stuff, but gel caps instead. I’ve had a lot of trouble hearing anything related to sleep aid medications. This happened to pop on my yt front page. Thank you. This helped me begin to accept what happened. Now I am able to realize and recognize now why my memory fails me so much from during to after it.

As someone who's dealt with sleep med addiction due to the HCL ingredient, he's right, absolutely do not mess with benadryl. I have bipolar and when I'm severely exhausted or stressed, I get hallucinations. That paired with the hallucinations these cause are legit terrifying.

Hearing Emu say "ceilings are cringe, I'm floor gang now" was something I never knew that I needed.

I’ve been using Benadryl for sleep aid for half a year now trying to adjust to being a night shift nurse. I have chronic insomnia so even my parents gave it to me as a kid regularly. But I’ve noticed over this past month that I haven’t been able to sleep no matter how much I take and the brain fog the next day is getting worse- to the point it’s affecting my job. And being a nurse doesn’t allow for mistakes. this is the wake up call I needed to stop doing this and try something more natural to fix my insomnia. Thank you for this video!!

It does not take much to stop an allergic reaction, it can save your life if you dont hsve an epipen handy.Get it it in quick then get medical help as some allergens can persist beyond its effects. Requires 2 to 4 pills crushed to powder taken with a glass of water to get it in the system quickly.❤

It’s so easy to OD on Benadryl. I was using it habitually for a while. It helped me feel less anxious. Plus no sneezes, ha ha. I am aware that this was dumb. Funny thing is, it wasn’t a conscious decision to start doing it. Just some number of hours would go by and I’d think, “I can probably take more now.” You build up a tolerance. Well, one day I was just sitting there and all of a sudden, nothing around me was real. I don’t know how else to describe it. It was like being in a dream, very disconnected. I stood up and felt like the floor was a mile away. I thought, “Uh oh. That’s not right.” I was very mellow in the moment and eventually I just went to sleep. Crazy crazy dreams. I thought I’d check to see how many Benadryl I had taken that morning. (I had a pack I’d just bought) Ten. I’d take ten in only a couple of hours. Not the most any one has ever taken, but five times the recommended dosage and I didn’t even realize it at the time. So I realized it was a problem and quit taking it. It wasn’t hard as I was pretty afraid of experiencing that unreality again. Now I don’t take it even correctly because I don’t want to get back in a bad habit with it.

In my early teens as an attempt to end things, I OD'd on benadryl. Thankfully my mother found me and got me to the hospital. I only remember also waking up properly 3 days later, pulling out a tube, and being very confused still. It's taken me years to feel like I'm mostly back to normal after that, but my memory has never been the same. As he said, don't do this.

I once took a triple dose of benadryl in college and I lost 10 hours of memory. I was conscious the whole time and interacting with people and I still to this day cannot remember anything that happened other then what people told me

“She was a regular college student in 2020...” What could possibly go wrong??

I mean yeah. God when I heard the “she had heard that Benadryl can open your mind” I was literally livid. I don’t even think anybody likes having to take Benadryl. It’s literally awful, it just makes you unable to function until you sleep it off. And usually you wake up with a headache too. My fucking lord taking 2 bottles of it because “Benadryl will open your mind” is actually one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard.

Im so happy that girl pulled thru!

I think I should mention, that in the real-life case that this was based off of, the girl was 15, and unfortunately, she passed away from the Benadryl overdose. As sad as it may seem, not everyone gets a happy ending.

This hits home as (as stupid as it sounds) I was abusing DPH everyday for 6 months in high-school(26 now 6 years off it) I actually had a grandmal seizure in class because I took 900 mg before school also had calcium build up from it too as each cap contained 25 mg of calcium or something like that. I don't remember anything and my whole class was evacuated. But that didn't stop me from using it. During that 6 months, I had about 10 seizures from DPH abuse. Not the only drugs I've had a problem with but that's another story. Been clean from Fentanyl for almost a year and DPH for over 6 years. I'm lucky to be alive because of how much benadryl I use to do. It's jaw dropping now that I look back.

Fun fact: Where I am from, diphenhydramine isn’t used as antiallergic drug anymore but rather as a sleep drug. It belongs to the „old“ generation of H1-Antihistamines and is able to get to the central nervous system -> this is what makes you feel tired. Antiallergic drugs of the „new“ generation only affect your peripheral System, not your brain 🧠 Therefore they are amazing in relieving your allergic symptoms, but they won’t make you tired 😴
