This most probably was developed as the lyre travelled through the late bronze age from Greece up to the Germanic tribes by the iron age, probably was carried with the old Latin alphabet that turned into older futhark as well. We have found horns in both Greece and Denmark with "runic" inscriptions, one futhark one Greek but you can see where it came from. According to middle eastern explorers, the Viking and nordic people by 600 AD were rather civilized and many had not converted yet still being pagans. But they were forest worshipping people who bathed and wore fine clothing, not the ragged Hollywood folks we see on TV. They were well dressed, smelled good, and wanted to kill you for your land.

This is true. Personal grooming was an important part of life in Iron Age Scandinavia. The idea that the Norse were nothing but barbaric brutes is a modern conception, drawn from popular but historically inaccurate depictions.

Hi my name Benoit Dube. I selfmade a tagelharpa because i like the sound and i want to play like you or Einar! Practicing on an old northern medival instrument none arround me know about! Everyone is curious about how it sound now that i just finished building it and made some woodburning decorations (viking related animals) more a woodwork project first that become me wanting to push some sounds out of this faboulous object, while listening to great songs like this but i dont know how to tune it =s May i ask you how would you tune a 3 string model? P.s.I enjoy this song so much! I wish it was 3 time longer! Skoll!

Hi Benoit! First of all thank you for your kind words, they really pleased me :) I'm very happy you liked the song, we will upload more soon, hope you will like even that :D About the tuning, I generally tune 3 strings tagelharpa with a 4^ or 5^ interval; for example in this video the tuning is B B F#, or in other songs D D A, etc... but always compatibly with the features of the instrument. Many compliments for your work, I would like to see your tagelharpa, it seems to be really beautiful! :) Camilla
