A Super Quick History of Niger

Regarding the pronunciation of Niger, in my understanding the traditional English pronunciation was and is ˈnaɪdʒər (Nigh-Jer). That’s just how we say it. It is, however, increasingly being pronounced niːˈʒɛər (Ni-Zhair) which is the French pronunciation. Since the latter has increased in popularity, the former is sometimes regarded as ‘wrong’, when it is nothing of the sort. It is simply the English rendering of the word, just as we say ‘Rome’ not ‘Roma’ and ‘Spain’ not España and ‘Munich’ not ‘München’.

The pronunciation was changed from ny ger to nee jhair in the websters 10 edition in 2003. Before that all non french speaking western nations used ny ger. Another change of pronunciation, like the constantly changing definitions. The internet was a mistake.

Poor old Niger. It really needs a miracle to get out of this mess. Next is the land of the Yorubas and the country with West Africa’s largest city Lagos… Nigeria! 🇳🇬

Hello, I have recently watched your Alexander video and it reminds me of an debate I saw once. It is not a very well known debate, but it is: Is Charlemagne and the Frankish empire French or Belgian? The Arguments of both sides are as follows: French: The Franks were French, they became France and controlled most of France Belgian: Charlemagne was probably born in Liège (Belgium), they controlled and settled the areas of modern Belgium before the French parts, the Frankish language is more similar to the Dutch/Flemish language. I personally think they were Germanic because they settled in Modern North-Western Germany, Eastern Netherlands and very North-Eastern Belgium. Could you please solve this debate? It would be highly appreciated. !note, I haven't factchecked any of the arguments I listed earlier, so don't immediately assume they are all (completely) true!

People back in those days use that word as an insult towards Nigerian people that's why they use the short sentence Niger and now you have Ni-gga(it's the same but modernized). Just like how some call us(Muslims) Mohammadens because they think we worship Muhammad but it's actually Muslim or Muslimin(meaning one who submit to the will of God/Allah). Even hindu isn't actually called or originated from hindus but it was the British colonizer use the term as it is today. Even Christian is not actually called Christianity but they were called by who knows who because they are the people who follows Christ(follower of Christ). Christ means the Messiah/Saviour. That is how we begin to know them as Christ-ian. Follower of Jesus the Christ.

You left out mention that the unrest and falling governments after their independence in 1960 were largely because of French interference, and economic colonization, and more recently because of US interference and imperialism.
