    At 72 years young, this Okie's grandparents were born in the 1800's in the hills of both KY and Northern AR. They moved to Indian territory (later Oklahoma), and built old log cabins, barns, and buildings just like these shown. Even most of my Aunts and Uncles homes were like these. Brought tears to my eyes just looking at them. Grandpa also played the fiddle and banjo by ear. Excellent player that could flat dance with the best of 'em. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

    Love Cades Cove, many picnics at the Henry Whitehead place. It was peaceful and not traveled as much as the loop. Rich Mountain Road takes you back to Townsend, but it’s been years since we took that road. It’s very winding and rough the best I remember. Really enjoyed your singing at the Old Methodist Church. I know they used to allow weddings to be held in the old churches, not sure if they still do. Your song reminded me of a childhood memory. I remember my parents having a record album called Flight Final. That record was like a reenactment of boarding a plane flight where the destination was Heaven. Thanks for the memories and the Cades Cove trip. Have a blessed day!

  • @TheAppalachianStoryteller

    @TheAppalachianStoryteller

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Deb! Yes that is a Cantilever Barn. It looks odd because the footprint is so small, but there is a reason for that. You see, tax accessors taxed each building by the square feet of its footprint. Appalachians resorted to building barns like this with a smaller footprint that resulted in less taxes! A bonus was that the smarter cows had a place to stay dry during rain.

    What a wonderful escape for a minute...I need to get back to the Cove... used to spend a lot of time there years ago... Beautiful music in the church JD! Thanks and have a wonderful day 🤗❤️ Btw... do you know of any stories of a young girl, dressed in white, walking on the road that used to go to Knoxville (I can't remember the name) close to a very small cemetery...?

    @@TheAppalachianStoryteller I liked to go to the Cove by myself on my days off... one time I stopped at that road and was standing at the creek when I saw the girl walking down the road towards me... just a few seconds and she just faded away. There was a little path going up beside the road that led to a small cemetery... pretty sure they were all in the same family and died within a year or two of each other... I'd love to go back to visit this spot... and check my memory 🤔 Thanks JD

    I'm praying the same thing. Sad that a majority of America already voted bright red a couple years ago. Do legit votes even count anymore? A look at Washington DC answers that question.
