A Simple Weapon to Beat The French Defense
Ойындар
In this video, I play an instructive chess game featuring one of my favorite variations against the French Defense: The 2 Knights Attack. After the game, I provide some analysis and a bonus lesson of the many traps black can stumble into.

Man, I disagreed so strongly with Kf1 that I actually asked stockfish. Turns out that Kf1 is the best move. IMs are a different breed, what a weird and silent move.

How is it weird? What else you gonna play? c3? Well then he just trades the pawns, Kf1, king is safer and, if black wants to save his pawn then Bc5, and its the same position, with white to move and the king is safer. Black just lost a full tempo. Wouldn't say weird and silent. It's obvious really.

@@BMWE-hm7uz I saw the pawn trade as a good thing, looking how he's up material and it gives the option of castling to connect the rooks and there being two ways to take, with knight or pawn, so it's reasonably flexible. By no means a bad move at all (stockfish gives it +3.0 as opposed to +3.6), just not the best.
@BMWE-hm7uz

@The Cake they're both fine, but that's a stock fish evaluation and we are humans, the complexity of blacks defence is a lot harder than to find attacking moves for white. We have a psychological edge, black is under pressure from being mated, has to find the right move every move, vs just being a pawn down and at least gets his king safe and can maybe hope for a draw. If I was black, I'd rather the engine say 3.6 in whites favour in an easier position than 3.0 in a very complex one. Practicality is the difference between stock fish and the average human mind. Sometimes the best moves aren't necessarily the best moves

Lol I lost in that exact position with the french the day after 😂
Thanks Eric. As a less experienced Fort Knox player, this video taught me I can transpose from the 2 knights to defend myself. Instinct would’ve been 3….d4 to attack the knight (Nf6 played in-game) but that would’ve put me in unfamiliar territory. Love the videos, even if you are teaching the enemy. 🙂

The quintessential chess commentator. He also improves my chess, and improves my vocabulary. 😃
Love your educational content Eric!
Fun fact, the only game in the lichess masters database with 8... O-O actually has a win for black despite the position being completely lost for black after that move
Thanks Eric for the theory episode. I miss your st Louis classes when you gave similar lectures.
Great video. Thank you so much ❤
Very helpful for me who plays the French. Shows me which lines to avoid.
Thanks for the enjoyable content!!!
10:30 Looks like Ng4 gives black a load of counterplay, maybe equalizing? White must play Ng6 to trade down - trying to save the queen (castling either way, or moving the queen) is losing. Best for both sides seems to be trading down - for example, 1...Ng4 2. Ng6 Bxf2+ 3. Qxf2 Nxf2 4. Nxe7 Nxh1 5. Nxc6 bxc6 And white should be winning; black is a pawn up (soon to be two), but a bad bishop stuck behind its own pawns, and the knight should be trapped. But white still has to prove it.

yeah looking at the positions with an engine, things are actually incredibly sharp, if Eric's opponent played Ng4 things would have gotten real interesting
BRILLIANT PLAY!!
Thanks Eric, simple concept yet wounded black still has fangs. GMs know how to win “won” games, middle club players like me take too long wondering “what now?”
8:35 I think you realized a moment later, but it actually is en passant checkmate; because it's a double check with Bishop and Rook Black cannot block with the queen

I don't understand, how did you play 12. Qg3 when en passant is forced?
13:03 how about Qc7? Maybe I'm missing something but that looked to me like the best move
19:36 you cant block a double check thanks for all this glorious insight oh great eric rosen. xD
Eric, can we see your advance variation game (that you mentioned) agains the GM ?
Love how with less than a minute you start editing the sound settings 😅
Oooo, Dragonfly mate. Nice.
16:18 eric forgetting that after Qh4 Qxg2, there's Qxd8, no? Or are there shenanigans with the f3 square and queen bishop combo? Looks survivable idk
@lucasmatsuoca
Жыл бұрын
didnt calculate but looks very dangerous after Qf3, king cannot go back or rook falls with check, dark square bishop coming, idk, but this is enough to discard the variation and go for a simpler and safer line
Can you make a content about the Anti-Dutch Line of your London System about the Senechaud Gambit?
Can anyone answer me, why did black not play pawn d4 in the beginning instead of castling? This would threaten a piece forcing a retreat and be defended doubly, out defending white w the bishop covering the queen
21:40 a Little Prince mug 🙂
"Ohh yes my two rooks" haha

@Stargazer not quite an exchange, but a Queen for a Rook & Bishop.
At 16:36 why didn't black play Bh2? Doesn't it give a discovered attack on the queen while targeting g1 rook?
This is one of those games where you feel you are close to checkmate but black keeps side stepping rhe attack. Very frustrating
I love the game plus review videos
At 12:26 would Queen to C7 have been a better move? Only asking because I’m curious if it doesn’t work some how.

Omg I've been wanting a weapon against the French for ages, and now imericrosen is sharing one. Amazing 🤩
At move 27, does bh2 not just win a rook because black queen is defending rook
10:30 there's something I'm missing, because I don't see why Nxe6 on move 14 wasn't better by a pawn than the sequence that ultimately got played.

It's just a pawn thst isnt really doing anything and the initiative that white had at that moment was greater in the position, than the e6 pawn was worth. Just a different imbalance to look at and try to think about in your future games, that material isn't always the deciding factor. Once the initiative disappears, you've then lost the dynamics of the position and your playing out a pawn up endgame. The variation Eric chose was complex, over complicated, so many threats, king looks silly on g6 and bear in mind that Eric had already sacrificed a piece, can't sac a piece and then play normally afterwards. You sac, you've gotta mate, or you're just gonna lose if black consolidates the position and trades everything off
@valeriekeefe8898
Жыл бұрын
@@BMWE-hm7uz I generally agreed already, but you lost me at the point where all sacrifices must end in a mate. Eric had his material compensation as well as an unpleasant position for Black. There is more than one way to win from there.
@BMWE-hm7uz
Жыл бұрын
@Valerie Keefe I mean more like once the attack runs out, you must have another positive Imbalance in your favour to exploit, be it material advantage, a winning endgame, But more in general, once you've sacrificed a piece, you've gotta keep going with the initiative and don't let black consolidate his position. With less space, trading pieces only helps black as the pieces are cramped on his side of the board, takes one of your attackers off of the board, and practically speaking, gives black less to think about.
At 15:20 Rc6 bxc6 and Qd6 was fine?
Dumb question I'm sure but at 15:20 can't you do rxc6 and after ...bxc6, qxd6 and you have 2 bishops for a rook?

A steampunk weapon against the French Defense.
I would have been lazy and taken the white bishop with the rook just to avoid all bishop pair shenanigans and play an endgame with easy targets!
I think in 15:31 you should play Rxc6 because if pawn takes Qxd6 and there is literally no either best move for black.If there is,comment pls
