Nelson, from one educator to another, I admire your approach, style, tone, and thoroughness. I have been teaching for over 20 years in NYC public schools. Currently teaching 4th grade (including the school’s Chess Club), and I want you to know that you’re a natural born teacher. Thank you for your amazing videos - tutorials, ratings climbs, hints and tips. Keep up the amazing work!!

The Double Rook Sacrifice was stunning!!! Thanks for the tip. I never would have dreamed it.
I used to play Blackmar Diemer through the standard d4, d5, e4 opening a lot in my old chess club, so when I transitioned back to kings pawn openings a few years back, BDG remained in my back pocket as my go to option that I've used vs. the Scandinavian for all of that time.
This video is really helpful! I usually struggle to handle positions against the Scandinavian. Especially when the Scandinavian that I'm facing is Magnus

Really enjoyed this excellent guide to the Scandinavian. You covered nearly all the main lines, with easy to remember attacks. I will definitely try your solutions !
That bit with bobby fisherman 😂
This is one of the best chess videos I've ever seen! Thanks Nelson!
Thank you! This one gets me all the time and I never know what to do.
Loved this video. My new favorite Chess channel for sure.
Thanks for this video. I hate playing against the Scandinavian, so my usual strategy is to just push my pawn past theirs.

You could also play Knight F3, so you're the one who Gambits the pon (there is a Gotham Chess video about that).

A very easy system is the big centre variation, where white takes on e5 and then plays d4 and c4. You get a safe small advantage in every line and the best variations for black often require a completely different plan from the main line with Nc3 that many at club level will not know very well. When I went through my 1. e4 phase (as a junior) I had a 100% record in this variation over a fairly large number of games.

Marvelous work ! Thanks , Nelson !
Really really awesome and understandable video. More of these Nelson! 😁
Love your videos Nelson keep up the good work!
The Scandinavian player should decline with c6 to get a Caro-Kann. The main lines of the Scandinavian and Caro-Kann are very similar and result in identical pawn structures. Furthermore, the Scandinavian player should already know the Advance Caro-Kann because white could make the mistake of playing 2. e5.

You’re 100% right, but you’re giving scandi players too much credit. At least 50% of them I run into at the 1100 level just give a bunch of random Queen checks for the first 3 or 4 moves after 3.Nc3. Most people play the Scandinavian because they want to be aggressive. They don’t actually understand their opening.
@adamtheamazing4411

Even better to decline with the nimzowitch defense since there is a scandinavian variation

Simply transpose into a Morphy gambit
Thank you, Nelson, you Have touched the point, as opposed to other coaches - there's too much to know to refute the Scandi, and it's rare to meet it, so we may as well go astray from it, even at the cost of a slightly worse position.
Awesome video, I’m excited to try some of these lines

Man I love your videos. Best on YT
nelson love how you play
This couldn't be any more needed at the moment
After 3...f5 4.f3 black is not compelled to take on f3 and instead can play 4...e5 or 4...Nf6. What should be plan against these moves?
Thanks so much Nelson! This is my first time playing the Blackmar-diemer gambit and i ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED my opponent. They played the aggresive variation and i used your follow up. I won a bishop and it was mate in a few moves. My opponent had no hope and resigned. Thank you again and keep up the amazing work!!!!
Nice video Nelson! Also, one thing I ve wanted to ask you is, are you going to continue going to any OTB tournaments any time soon? It's been 2 years since you made a video on it..
You should do a follow-up both the …Bf5 and …g6 variations, which I think are decent for Black.
I love playing the Scandi (though I play the Cow a lot now) so I will be watching this intensely to see how to mess you guys up.
Thanks a lot! Good technique against the scandinavian.
Hi Nelson, when we get to the 1st, I'll send a little to show my appreciation of You, You give soooo much, just glad to be able to give a little back....!!!
Very nice. I always take that damn Scandinavian pawn and get in trouble from it. NO MORE! Thx!
Really good system
Awesome video again, Nelson. Thx. BTW, have you ever forked five pieces with a knight? Checked the king and forked the queen, both rooks and a pawn. My opponent quit after the move. 😊.
sweet video, man. watched two of your videos now and once you get past the clickbaity thumbnails and titles, this is some really helpful, well-explained stuff. I’ve tried a few other channels - ben finegold/chessteacher etc - and the info either just doesn’t stick with me: they condescend a little too much, they don’t explain lines that they should, or they’re just weird, but yours stays with me immediately and it all feels like stuff I’m going to use
Taking that pawn is the best option to be honest you can around the queen and eventually take queen most people and up making mistakes when there queen is being kicked around

I think wot i enjoy is how hé covers different possible postions that could occur when you make a certain move.keep on the lessons hoping to hit 2000 in rapid even though am at1100
Great content, thnx.
It's interesting; the line after Qe1 for two moves in a row there is only one good move for black on the computer. Black needs to Nc6 - Nb4 (that is why Bb4 is a bad move and Bxc3 makes it even worse) to attack the d3 bishop, just in time to stop the d3 bishop - Qh4 line up. Now this can become slightly bad for white because the bishop is "trapped" and always going to get traded, kinda similar to how Na5 stops the fried liver attack because the bishop cannot escape the trade. If Be2 to escape not only does white's attack get neutralized black would Nxc2 to win another pawn and gain tempo by attacking the rook.
This video is perfectly timed! I lost 3 times in a row today to the scandinavian and couldn't find any good theory videos.

I have to watch this video more to remember the dance moves, but I do like the D4 move better than taking the pawn and moving knight to C3 because that is what they are expecting. When I see them pause, it is a good sign.
I like to play Knight F3 against the Skandinavian, there is a nice Queen/Checkmate trap if they take the pon. If anyone is looking to get Brilliant moves, it's a great line too as you may get two consecutive Brilliant moves. I can share some PGN's of such games if you want.

That cheap and extremely famous ICBM gambit which give free brilliant moves to 400s expecting they don't know any theory?
Another Scandinavian player here! I've been trying to tidy up the lines people pull out if they don't care for the main lines with the white pieces. On black's fifth move, you say that people are going to primarily see two moves. . . neither of which are amongst the top four moves for black - the best move being a very natural square for black's pieces, and black has a nice lead. These are sharp lines though! Still have to work to see if any of these tricks exist down those lines. All that said, I rarely see the BD against my Scandinavian, and it may have caught me unprepared! Fun opening. :)
Thank you so much
Hey nelson! can you tell me if d5 exd5 and c6 is good for black? my friend keeps playing and I didnt recommend the opening for him.. since hes a 1400.

Great video my friend I’m so sick of the Scandinavian opening 😂
Lol who did Peter's voice?
Nice visdom and intresting thank u
i like when you put the pgn in the comments thank you!
Thanks. Im currently struggling in this opening.
Problem is black won’t play on castle to kings side. If you are a Scandinavian player you will castle on queens side most of the time and probably leave the pond for trade and not even pay attention to move it toward white cause all you need is the center.
At minute 9:36, why doesn't Black g7 pawn take the rook? (I guess what I'm thinking is wouldn't Black want space for King to flee? (even if it created doulbed pawns). Thank you anyone for any insights!
Lovely I will try it.

ive been loving the Scandinavian, watching to counter the counter
excellent tutorial
I always love playing agaist the scandinavian players. Keep attacking their Queen and either they eventually fall for the trap, or keep defending it by sacrificing a few pieces and end up losing the end game.
This is also helpful to someone who loves the Scandinavian like me
I have a feeling that Mr. Bartholomew, your old pal, The Scandyman, will quickly refute this.
I’m watching this video to learn how people are going to attack me when I play the Scandinavian Thank you 🙏🏽
Can u make interactive study on Lichess pls?
I usually play e5 after d5 and try to make a diagonal wall, suffocating their position
Lopez sir I'm a fan.
Nice Gambit ! Very effective, i won a lot of game with it recently, in a brutal way. What about Bc5+ at 05:13 black won't take the pawn...
D5 then KF6 that’s my system as black for Scandinavian if pawn captures. D4 player overall or RETI / ENGLISH
Winning or losing couldnt prevent..both players have plans and those who have better plans will win the game
What do I do if they bring the C Bishop out to protect the pawn on move 3?
Get well soon
When bishoop takes pinned f3 knight and we take back with the queen, what to do if queen takes d4? If we go queen b7 takes pawn and traps rook, then the black queen is already pretty close to our king My visualisation while typing is not that great, maybe it's simple, we block checks with pieces, we kick out the queen from our territory
