    While drinking my 4th paulaner hefeweizen and eating pretzel rods Im watching this. Got me thinking how pretzels predate potatoes, in Europe at least. No surprise to me that pretzels are a snack favorite of mine

    Thanks for the informative history lesson. I love soft pretzels especially pretzel twists (a long piece of pretzel dough that's like the twisted center part of the pretzel). Coincidentally, I got some stuff from Philly Pretzel Factory earlier this week before you posted this. I got their pretzel dog, pretzel sausage and cinnamon twist. I also tried their pepperoni pretzel that's a pretzel twist topped with pepperoni and cheese (yummy!). I've also had a soft pretzel homemade by a family member that was de-lish-ious. :-) The only soft pretzel I have no desire to try is the frozen Super Pretzels but that's probably because I live in pretzel country and a good fresh one can be easily had.

    What's funny is the Super Pretzels, the phoniest pretzels imaginable, were clearly inspired by old-fashioned Bavarian and German pretzels. But the difference in quality is light years apart. Super Pretzels are decidedly OK if you catch them right out of the oven. Otherwise, they're worse than Philly soft pretzels that have gone stale 😋

    @@JimmyMidnite Phony is the right word for Super Pretzels. If I'm remembering correctly, years ago places like Woolworth's would sell Super Pretzels hot at their snack bar area but even then I don't think I ever had one because to me, the only "real" soft pretzels were Philly soft pretzels. Yeah, years ago I had a NYC street soft pretzel and I have enjoyed an Auntie Ann's pretzel once or twice but only Philly-style soft pretzels are the real thing. :-)

    Can you say the pretzel is the first official comfort food?

  • @JimmyMidnite

    @JimmyMidnite

    Жыл бұрын

    Hmmm...hard to officially say what came first, because sweets and snacks have existed almost as long as humans, but the pretzel's been around, relatively unchanged, for over 1,400 years, and it's just as delicious today as it was for the medieval Italian monks who first created them. So I'd agree that the pretzel was the first official comfort food.

    These pretzels are making me thirsty. Great video, a wealth of information. The “traitor” and flashing red lights was hilarious. I used to get great pretzels from a mall stand years ago, can’t even remember the name, I don’t know if you’d approve of these, they were soft and were a cross between a donut and pretzel and were loaded with cinnamon sugar. The pretzels were as big as my head. Sadly they are no more. Thinking about moving to Philly just for the pretzels and steak and cheese sandwiches. 🤘🥨🥨🥨🥨🥨🤘

    Eh, I used to be more of a pretzel elitist, but while I definitely have my favorites, I’m open to a ton of variety, including the interesting version you mentioned (which actually sounds similar to Auntie Anne’s, where the pretzels are in the traditional Bavarian shape, but then it’s got a ton of butter, cinnamon and sugar, or other toppings). The traditional German ones are often as big as you mentioned, especially at Oktoberfest, so maybe it was partially inspired by that 🤔 If you’re ever on the East Coast, let me know and I’ll take you to good pretzel and cheesesteak places!
