In this new video, I'm at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, where I'm reliably informed some of the best food in America is to be found. I put that theory to the test by trying DeNic's Pork Sandwich and the Soft Pretzels found in the market. I'll be back for more in a future episode! Mustard or cheese sauce is great with the plain pretzels. And you can ask for less or no salt.

gotta be like the grainy deli mustard. the bright yellow stuff is too vinegary for a pretzel
There are a lot of Italians in and around Philly so the pork sandwich is influenced by that cuisine. It's not broccoli, it's rapini, or broccoli rabe. It's actually a variety of mustard greens. It's a little bitter which cuts the fat of the pork nicely but can be an acquired taste.

Tip for your readers. Cheese Whiz(R) brand can be hard to find, expensive/overpriced, and is now made with crap. An alternative is boxed deluxe mac n' cheese and use the gourmet cheese foiled packet sauce (NEVER powder) for your sandwich. The better gourmet brands (not Kraft nor Velveeta) are excellent and might include smoked gouda, sharp chedder, cheddar bacon, or four cheese blends. I found this out one day while checking my cupboard for something to put on a sliced roast beef hoagie. Holy heck that opened my eyes. Annie's, Cracker Barrel, Taste of Inspirations, Specially Selected, and Private Selection all make packets of tasty cheese sauce that are perfect for Phillies.

A secret for all tourists. When eating a cheesesteak, you must respect the tilt. You hold one hand under one hand over pulled slightly to the side, tilt your head and bite. This way, you don't lose anything off the side. Also Wiz is a South Philadelphia thing. The rest of us, get provolone or American cheese.

Locals may not realize it but another special thing about that sandwich is the bread. I live in maine and I can't find [hoagie roll] bread like that. Every time I'm in Philly or NY I mean to pick up bread to bring home and freeze and every time I forget to do it. Don't take that awesome bread for granted!
I was in the Philly area for a week or so and, of course, tried Pat's and Geno's (and was unimpressed). My favorite was Jim's Steaks, a block east and across South St. from Ishkabibles.
So glad you made it to Reading Terminal Market!

Cheez Whiz is various milk products, with a teeny bit of cheese, oil, mustard, and worcestershire sauce. I find the stuff revolting myself, personally a real cheesesteak to me has provolone. The one oddity to me when I lived in the Midwest for 12 years was all the places putting "whiz" on everything.
@Navyuncle

Why do you think they call it " whiz"?
@joycebowen8958

That is odd. I would think having grown up just a few blocks from the Wisconsin state line that cheese whiz would be an insult because there are so many dairy farms across the Midwest. I'm now ( and have been for many years) back in my home state of Texas and we wouldn't dream of using fake cheese! ( I do still reminisce about the Wisconsin apples from the orchard and aged cheddar 😢)

My first real job after high school was at the Philadelphia College of Physicians, where the Mütter Museum is housed.
When my sister came to visit Philly from San Antonio she had to buy soft pretzels before she went home, oh and she also ate a philly cheesesteak.
I grew up right outside Philly and lived there for many years and never had a pork sandwich from DeNic's. I've had plenty of cheesesteaks and hoagies, though. In South Jersey and Philly. Reading Terminal Market is great. Was there last year for breakfast while attending a family wedding.
The Reading terminal market is a great place to visit. So many great places to eat in Philly.
I absolutely love soft pretzels. It's hard for me to walk past one. And cinnamon sugar is the best. If you ever try a salt one again find out if they do cheese dipping sauce with it. Really good like that.
Soft pretzels are my addiction! You should try it with mustard .

Shaun, in order to answer your query re. Ishkabibble's, I had to leave for a google search. Here's what came up: The song derived from a mock-Yiddish expression, "Ische ga bibble?", which was purported to mean "I should worry?", prompting a curious (and perhaps not coincidental) association with the "What, me worry?" motto of Mad Magazine's mascot, Alfred E. Neuman.
You gotta put mustard on the pretzel. It's French's for me (the bright yellow stuff), though some prefer spicier varieties. But it ain't a Philly pretzel without mustard.
I am absolutely starving after watching this video! I’m gonna have to wait until tomorrow to watch anymore of your adventures lol!
the Philly market is absolutely the best, love from New Jersey!
Independence Hall is the most historic thing in Philly.
Usually it is the little hole-in-the-wall places that all the locals know about. You should visit the well known places too. But maybe just as a comparison to what you have found now. I have always thought cheesesteaks were a bit like grilled cheese sandwich . . . There isn't a really bad one.
I love Reading Terminal Market! I used to live in Levittown, Bucks County, with my then husband and would take the SEPTA train from Tullytown to the Terminal. Bassetts ice cream is soooooo good! My ex-husband's grandfather would go down to Tommy's for the roast pork sandwich after he got through at the horseracing track. Philadelphia is one of my favorite cities. I'm from a small city in eastern NC, so I don't go for huge crowds in the streets, so Philadelphia is just the right amount of big city hustle and bustle for me.
That dry pretzel is making ME thirsty.
Great video, Tecca and Shaun: Wiz has two meanings here in the states. As you stated in your video cheese wiz, the other meaning involves a polite term for having to go number one. I'm going to assume that you are referring to cheese wiz on your sandwiches, enjoy them. -Happy trails
My mom (a Philly girl) passed her love of those big fat soft pretzels down to me. When she was a girl back in the 1930's, she ate her pretzels fresh from the street vendor's cart with a little mustard on top. I'm a soft pretzel purist. Anything sweet (sugar, chocolate, raisins, cinnamon, etc.) baked into or on a pretzel just isn't traditional and seems yucky to me. (- and don't get me started about cinnamon bagels!😝) Just give me a plain pretzel with the kosher salt on top, and I'm happy!
I need to try the haggis sandwich you mentioned. I just got back from my first trip to Scotland and had haggis a couple of times (once on bruschetta...so good!) and was a wee bit shocked at how much I enjoyed it. Lol
My favorite place to get cheese stakes in Philly, when we used to live there is Vincent’s pizza and family restaurant. They are just outside of Northeast Philadelphia in Rockledge. Most people eat soft regular pretzels with mustard. The type of mustard depends on the person. I prefer plane yellow mustard.
They should have included some dipping sauces with the soft pretzels.
Mustard is traditionally put on a Philly pretzel before eating

Thank you! I may have been born and raised in NC, but I can tell the difference between a soft pretzel and a Philly pretzel.
I got my tickets to Edinburgh for the beginning of June. Hopefully, it won't rain too much. I'll be touring up north first, visiting Inverness and Aberdeenshire and seeing castles and megalithic sites, then swinging down to Perth and Kinross and Lake Tay, heading to Arran, and south into Galloway. From there I'll go to the Lake District and into England and Wales.
Shaun, my favorite pretzel is something I don't know if it is available anymore! But the best pretzel I ever tried was sold by a guy with a pretzel cart at the Exploratorium -- a science museum here in the SF Bay Area -- when I was a kid. It was hard on the outside, nice and soft and warm on the inside! SO good. I haven't been to the Exploratorium in a while, so I don't know if that guy is still there. But those were good pretzels. Next time you come back to SF, I definitely suggest a visit to the Exploratorium. It's a magical place. They do have an "after hours" program, where alcohol is served and no kids are allowed, and you can go to the different exhibits etc. But it's good in the daytime too. They a KZread channel too! 🙂
One of my favorite places to chow down!
