BANTING'S IMPARTED YEARS
(Music: Barrett's Privateers by Stan Rogers)
Oh the year was nineteen, ten and eight
And to think I take up sugar now
At eleven years old my fate was rung
By the death o' me islets of Langerhans
REFRAIN
Nobel them all!
I was lost to cruel disease
When a miracle cure saved mother her son
Dried her tears
Now I'm a croakin' man but I'll nevermore fear
The last of Banting's imparted years
Young Frederick Banting cried aloud
And to think I take up sugar now
Through shelling and fire he scorned his wounds
Til the fallen in battle be dressed and bound
REFRAIN
Diabetes then was a sickening plight
And to think I take up sugar now
We'd down the least that a man could scoff
Til the famine or saccharide capped us off
REFRAIN
The Simcoe doc was a knife by trade
And to think I take up sugar now
When the practice failed he set his jaw
To the treatment of glycosuria
REFRAIN
The pancreas' form had long been known
And to think I take up sugar now
Islets that curb sugar low or high
And digestive fluid from the acini
REFRAIN
He worked as long I withered and waned
And to think I take up sugar now
Sweating with Best in animal trials
To wring an elixir from the tiny isles
REFRAIN
Then at length on death's cold mantle I lay
And to think I take up sugar now
The extract was drawn and the hype went in
In the first e'er treatment of insulin
REFRAIN
My vigour returned and in truth I thrived
And to think I take up sugar now
Banting & co shared a Nobel prize
And the work saved north'ard of a million lives
REFRAIN
So here I lay in my twenty-eighth year
And to think I take up sugar now
The pneumonia's fast in both me lungs
But I want no islets of Langerhans
REFRAIN

Wow, one of my friends was just diagnosed with Type 1 last week (a week ago today, I think). I immediately dove head-first into research, and understood everything you sang about! What coincidental timing! I saw him a few days ago and said, "I'm glad that we're friends in 2018 instead of 1918, I'm thankful that you're not going to die from this." Let's keep working on a cure!

even if that worked Crystalina, that would be type 2. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease that destroys the tissues that produce insulin, usually in childhood. Type 2 is the tissues gradually become resistant to insulin, so it can be diet-controlled in the early stages. I'm not convinced the actual rawness would help, but I guess eating raw would greatly increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, on account of that's pretty much all you could eat.

Today, I learned that today 11 January 2022, is 100-year anniversary of that first Insulin treatment. For me, what is bittersweet is that, while this is a proud day for medicine and science, people are still struggling to afford insulin that could save their lives.

it does not have to be this way, the production of enough Insulin for one year for one person only costs 120 Euro. This allready includes the cost for transport etc to the country were is is suppossed to be sold. Even if you would not have universal healthcare for everybody, if you would not allow medication to be priced execessively most people could affort their treatment.

27 was not a decent age for anyone to die in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Even in the middle ages, or even antiquity, 27 was young to die. The commonly stated average life span about those periods doesn't take into account infant/child mortality, which could be as high as 90% before age 5. After age 5, the mortality rate drops dramatically.

  • @COMALiteJ

    @COMALiteJ

    5 жыл бұрын

@@pendlera2959 is correct. Too often we speak of “average” lifespan having been dramatically increased with modern sanitation and medical science, but in reality, the proper measurement is *nominal* lifespan, or the age people live to _who live to die of old age and its directly related complications._ *That* hasn’t changed all that much. _Average_ lifespan is the average age of _everyone_ who dies, _regardless_ of when _or how._ At no time were there lots of 30-year-old geezers with long gray beards and creaking arthritis. What we’ve done is dramatically reduce causes of _premature_ death, though we’ve also introduced some new ones such as vehicular accidents. Cancer is rising due partly to our rape of the environment and adulteration of foods, but also because people are living long enough to _get_ non-childhood cancers because they don’t die of something else first. Reducing premature death raises the _average_ lifespan but _not_ the _nominal_ lifespan.

    WHY ARE YOU SO GOOD!

  • @RScholar
    @RScholar6 жыл бұрын

Wow Tim...just, well...wow! I'll admit that for the first 40 seconds I had this look on my face: }:-\, but then as usual you harpooned my attention with a truly compelling story being told, and by the halfway mark I found myself unable to keep one foot from keeping time to such an infectious melody. You're definitely firing on all cylinders creatively, bringing us things that few others would dare to gamble on all of us appreciating but secure enough in your talent to take these big swings and inevitably manufacture home runs. You must've come away with some new insights on mixing technique since your not too distant call for feedback and suggestions on the topic. The blend on this one is Motown-worthy: all kinds of rich, silky warmth creating that wall of sound starting in the lower registers. It's so tight that I'm convinced there's at least one sneaky chord in there that I'm missing a note on no matter how many times I close my eyes and press the cans against the sides of my head. Any chance you'll have mercy and at least give me a hint? ;) There must be something that acts as a "secret sauce" for these old sea shanties, isn't there? It reminds me of good barbershop quartets, when you think you know where they're headed next but then in the transition they hit you with that Major sixth or a Dominant ninth that are tuned "just so" and you know /something/ was there, but no matter how many four-note combos you strike on the keyboard nothing sounds right. I know the meter is a big part of it, 6/8 time and the syncopation of all those dotted eighth notes will make even corpses bend an ear, but there's something musical too,...just no idea what exactly it is. As always, bravo my good man. Bravo.

Well, I tell ya ... this is the newest chantey you're ever like to hear. Stan Rogers wrote the original "Barrett's Privateers" in 1976; he'd joined a chantey group and wanted to sing lead, but other group members had already staked out their claims on songs in their repertoire. Stan thought about the situation and decided that if he wanted to sing lead on something, he'd better write it himself. And he did. Barrett's Privateers is a story of the American Revolution, told from the Loyalist side: a tale of a privateer's (i.e., legal pirate's) crew looking for some easy money and instead finding death and destruction.

It honestly might have something to do with overtones tricking your ears. Since every human's voice has different overtones, the blend is always going to be a bit different and some will sound more 'perfect' or 'unique' than others.

This song is pancreatic friendly, except ''And to think I take up sugar now''. It urges me to take sweet chocolate opera cake and eat it like I'm having hypoglycemia. I love how you describe Prof. Fredrick Banting in Leonard Thompson's view, from how he failed surgeon training and put his efforts to discover glycosuria causes. And you put Charles Best's, too ! I was like reading a medical history book, but in more fancy way. Although is about type 1 diabetes, I hope many people here would also aware about type 2, which listed on top ten killer diseases. Awsome song. Love your work, Tim, as always.
