An RAF Presentation film, beginning with a brief overview of the history of airpower from 1914, through the Battle of Britain and Bomber Command's offensive against Germany to the dropping of the first atomic bombs. A Phantom pilot introduces the film, explaining that its purpose is to demonstrate how the RAF can counter the threat posed by the Soviet Union. That threat is illustrated through footage of Soviet air, land and sea forces exercising, and followed by scenes of a readiness exercise at RAF Bruggen in West Germany. Phantom aircraft based in the UK are scrambled to intercept a Tu-16 'Badger' reconnaissance aircraft, Phantoms refuel in mid air with Victor tankers, and the role of Nimrod, Buccaneer and Tornado aircraft is explained. A Sea King search and rescue helicopter winches an injured man from the deck of a vessel at sea, Jaguar and Tornado aircraft carry out low-level bombing sorties and the Red Arrows are shown carrying out formation aerobatic manoeuvres. The narrator finishes with the point that strong armed forces will deter potential aggressors and that the NATO alliance has kept the peace in Europe since 1945.
