    Insane speed from gear you can carry on your back for less than a couple of thousand dollars. Kitesurfing is incredible! For the record its also INCREDIBLY SAFE if you have lessons and stick to the basic rules.

    It's going to take some new ideas to make a kite surfer go faster than Larsens's Sailrocket which did a mile at over 65kts and peaked at 68kts, and as he said afterwards: "She still has more speed in her". The reason he can say this is the basic design simply gos faster and gets more stable the faster it goes. Unlike a kite board which uses an inflated parasail, the Sailrocket uses a complex (but simple) rigid, solid surface wing for power and a horizontal winglet extension to fly the main wing. This is FAR more efficient than a "soft" wing (IE: Kite/parasail). The difference is like that between a flying using a parasail and flying a high performance sailplane (IE: Glider). The other reason is the design of the foil, the foil is not speed limited by cavitation like most foils and it directly counteracts the sideways pull of the wing by pulling into the wind. The wing has a horizontal leeward extension that works as a wing in ground effect to keep the wing and leeward pod flying just above the water. You really need to go to their site to see what I'm talking about. Now a foilboard and rigid kite, that's a possible way to beat the Sailrocket, but then that is basically what the Sailrocket is and it doesn't have to rely on human strength to keep it all from blowing apart at speed...

    The thing is that the sail rocket is significantly larger and more stable and achieves stability with minimal friction with hydrofoils if I'm correct. If you were to to rig up a working system for kites that utilises hydro/aero foils to achieve the same level of stability while minimising friction I think kite surfers have a chance to shatter that record

    +Max B no reason why you couldn't attach a Larsen foil to the kite rigging and see how close the numbers are.

    Hi Karen, I'm a big fan of Paul Larsen and have been to their site many times. I like your comparison of a kite to a rigid plane wing (see AC72's and AC45's) but due to the weight of a rigid sail would a kite be able to produce the same effect? They added fences to the foil which allowed the foil to continue to pull further and for longer than other foils (cavitation was prevented). Foils and Kites will raise the bar. Which type of each is the question. I say, use Paul's.

    I'm just starting to learn about kitesurfing - was curious why in these speed runs they're going crosswind and tacking hard? Wouldn't it be faster & less drag to put the kite in the middle of the power window and go straight downwind?

  • @bobix5726

    @bobix5726

    6 жыл бұрын

    No, kingluke2. If you ride upwind or at least not downwind, you gain more speed because of the pressure that you apply to the kite while he tries to drag you downwind so that resistance makes you gain more "false wind". So for example if you ride on 30 knots and you go downwind you would feel 30 knots or less but if you go upwind you would surely fell more than 35 knots even if you have 30 because of the gaining of this "false wind". Hope you understand it.

    So the "sail rocket" must be worth at least $300 000 (thats a guess) and Rob's kite set up worth roughly $3000. So if you want to get an extra 3.74 knots of speed you need to spend an extra $297 000, I think I know where the value for money is

  • @oscarnitz4923

    Despite the cost the sailrocket still goes faster. :P Its an amazing craft and it does exactly what it was intended and it does it extremely well And the sailrocket has broken its own record. 65 knots average with a peak of 67. Im not sure anyone will be beating that record for at least 5 years (except maybe the sailrocket could beat it again).

  • @danerlich7393

    @danerlich7393

    Oscar Nitz Very well written, Peak was actually 68 knots and I fully share your assessment that the ONLY craft that is likely to break sailrockets record is that boat or another stronger version of it. The way it was explained to me the Kite boards have a theoretical upper limit due to skin friction and the forces involved of sixty knots. This is reportedly exactly why Larson raised the bar to 65.45 knots. The strength of SailRocket was 68 knots - the peak speed it reached. To go faster the boat needs to be re-enforced but then there is also the matter of money, budget and risk and time and desire on Paul's part. He has already invested ten years of his life in this quest so no one could blame him if he has had enough.

    +ApriliaRSA250 Sailrocket was used off shore at Namibia and not in a canal or trench - there was an offshore breeze to use so the cost was nothing.

    +JacobMatan Sail Rocket cost much more than $300K to construct. I have seen C class boats that cost over twice that amount and they are similar in complexity. Oh and it is not just the money - it took well over a decade of effort to work the kinks out and release the speed inherent in the design which originated in the early 1960s from Bernard Smith's pen in his book the forty knot sailboat. The materials did not exist then to actually build such a boat. As to your assertion of value what you have to understand is that Sail Rocket broke a physical barrier that can not be achieved with a kite board set up and it actually if strengthened can go faster than this mark while the kite boards can't go faster. You can't get to the moon with a fireworks display, for that you actually need a saturn V rocket and the cost differential is substantial. By the same token my Trifoiler has actually sailed at 35 knots, while the C class costing tens of times more than this can not go that quickly. I hear you about value for money but this was not a value proposition it is how to get to the top of the heap and that mark kept moving upwards while Sail Rocket was chasing it. That they achieved the result - is incredible and yes it required resources and funding to get there but this team delivered results and I doubt that you will see that record broken any time soon.

    Perhaps you are mistaken about the world speed record for sailing speed. The current ratified world record is Mr. Paul Larson on Vestas SailRocket at 65.45 knots. The very reason he kept going to set the record at this pace is that theoretically kite surfing is limited to 60 knots which if the theory holds it is not possible for any kite sailor to ever touch the record now held by Larson.

    What Is Islam? Islam is not just another religion. It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham. Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God. It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone. It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine. The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as: { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4) Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus. Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him

    So let the Sail Rocket create the same kind of glass smooth trench 100 meters wide and see how fast that can go. Its forced to deal with the NATURAL formations to set records.. so should the kite kids. These kits kids are not playing on the same fair and equal playing field by physically creating the perfect channel like they do. Does this mean I can ride my road bike out of the back of an airplane and claim fastest bike rider because I am travelling 300mph ground speed when I leave the plane? No.
