New case looks much better. You are using 3d printing very practically. Impressived.

The bd prochot is used to protect parts such as chipsets and VRMs. If the VRMs heat up too much, a signal is sent to the processor asking it to consume less power. Deactivating it increases the stress on motherboard parts and reduces their lifespan. The 102 degrees is probably your VRM. You can buy small aluminum heatsinks and try to find the vrm but don't expect much. There are two causes, either not enough VRMs, so they are used too much, or poor cooling of the VRMs, or both.

Thanks for your opinion. Yes. I have the same thought in the conclusion. It definitely isn't good for long term run when bypassing any heat protection. A model with more generous VRM an cooling must be better choice. Btw, the VRM temp is 90*C at 14:47, which is not too bad in this form factor I think. The 102*C belongs to an unnamed sensor.

Seriously impressive TBH, I've been skeptical of these SFF Thinkstations but these tweaks together create a seriously capable machine for its size. Nice job! I want to make a few of these things

For the price of new A2000 alone, you can build whole new pc on am5 platform with rtx 4060 low profile, which will outperform this machine. This is actually exactly what I did few months ago. Results in heaven benchmark - 6.5k. SFX form factor, max gpu temps - 71, cpu around 5x-6x, max power consumption around 140W (starfield with framegen enabled)

Love the case! Gotta wonder how that would work as an efficient NAS with an m.2 adapter in the PCIe slot actually. But gaming on it is so cool! ThrottleStop never did much for my OEM stuff, glad to see a real application here.

A NAS with multiple NVMe drives in this case is a very nice idea. One of my homelab node is an OEM mini PC too, the HP Prodesk, but it isn't for NAS because the storage expansion is limited. My next mini OEM stuffs will definitely the Lenovo things. The PCIe slot brings a lot of potential.

It was a neat project beforehand, but now it is a neat little powerhouse. I bet with more tweaking, you can get more performance out of the current setup, but still this is very cool and it looks amazing in the clear filament. Well done!

I've got a lenovo m720q with a i7-8700T + T1000. I will do my own comparison to ur video to see how my fps holds up. Mine doesn't support DLSS though 😢

I used to own the T600 and T1000 too and pair them with the Dell Precision SFF. They were great, until I found out the A2000 😅

@thinhdora The a2000 is definitely the dream gpu upgrade for this system. I saw someone modify the heatsink to make it a single fan cooler to fit into this case but this is much better to make the case bigger to fit

I wouldn't mind printing it so I can play around with better gpus in the future however I would like to add vent holes for the cpu as well. Have u seen the lenovo p340? The ease of modification depends on how well you can use the Fusion 360. For adding some vent holes, it quite easy. I will describe briefly, can study more by these keywords: 1. (MUST) Measuring to find out the coordination of the vent (find the center point). 2. Create the vent holes. There are several approaches. My recommendation is (SHOULD): 2.1. Creating a sketch on the top cover's suface, create a small hole (round or square as you like) and populate them for the vent using Rectangular Pattern (help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?guid=SKT-CREATE-RECTANGULAR-PATTERN). 2.2. Intrude the top cover (by extrude command) with a nagative value bases on the sketch in 2.1 step. 9help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?guid=SLD-EXTRUDE-SOLID) It's only become a bit harder if you want to change more dimension, but not too hard. Just play around with existing sketches in the Fusion 360 file and do extrution again.

Thanks for the follow up! I was trying to use this machine for AI workload experimentation and wanted the RTX 4000 SFF on it (uses the same 70W as the RTX A2000). The problem is that throttle stop and other undervolt techniques are not permanent on the card firmware. Since they are not available to run on server OSes like ESXI, etc, we can't use that as it is a windows application :/

I know a better model, which can balances your desired size and power. It's the Dell Precision 32XX series. The Precision 3240 for example. They're built with 70W GPU from factory. Bigger than the mini and smaller than the SFF.

My mistake. Lenevo also has the same form factor line up. An example is ThinkStation P3 Ultra. Dual slot cards seem to be installable.

The same CPU was used in Mac Mini 2018 and it’s not bad even now because there it supports up to 4xThunderbolt 3 ports. Also I had Lenovo laptop with i7-8665U and eGPU Aorus RTX2070 and I faced same problems with stuttering and low frequencies while gaming. Throttlestop really helps me back then. Unfortunately Intel prohibited using almost all Throttlestop controls in their 12 gen moblie CPUs and newer generations

Thanks for your information. Yes it's the same CPU generation with the Mac Mini 2018, but I remember the Mac Mini uses another variant, and as powerfull as desktop version. The one I use in the video is the T variant, the performance is somewhere between desktop CPU and laptop CPU. Btw, thank you for the info about ThrottleStop and 12th gen mobile CPU. It's must be useful for me in the future tests.

I had a PC with a 8400T back in 2019, but today I use a 12500T with a RTX 4060. Even with 6 M.2 drives, 2 HDDs, 2 SATA SSDs, and running on a ATX Z690 motherboard the highest power draw from the wall is 170W benchmarking (110~140W average AAA gaming). Unfortunately with all the drives, and a power hungry ATX Z690 motherboard my idles are in the high 40's. Oh well that is the price you pay for having 40TB of storage & a high end motherboard. BTW I got the CPU & Motherboard for $200 so it was still worth it. The main problem I see with this is not the CPU nor GPU it's that OEM motherboard those boards have some harsh hardware limitations that not only limit the performance, but make it harder to reap it's full potential (like the 50W power limit on the PCI-E port). Personally I would go, and look for a cheap ITX motherboard with a SFF case & Flex PSU then call it a day. Still overall it was a fun project to watch overall.

Thanks for sharing your thought. You're right, old hardwares, especially OEM stuffs, have many limitations. My intention was to playing around with old OEM hardwares like the one in video, to see if they have any potential left with their age. Sometimes old hardwares are hidden gems.

Hello there, nice video ! I was looking at doing this mod. I really like your 3D printed case. I want to buy a 3D myself. Something big enough to print cases like that. Our even itx cases. Was told to get one capable of making a full helmet. That at that size i wouldn't need to upgrade later if i start with something too small. Which 3D printer do you have ? & what size is it if you don't mind me asking ?

@@thinhdora Thank you very much ! I greatly appreciate it. I have a Lenovo Thinkcentre m920x Tiny that looks to an exact sort of "rebrand" of that NEC you have. I'll have double check the measurements. But I believe that 3D printed lid will fit 1:1 or with minor adjustments.

That's some crazy performance compared to the size of the pc

Nice nice, the CPU I guess is just really artificially limited by the motherboard when there is a high power draw PCIe device. The 8500T doesn't seem to saturate the 35w TDP bc of the low all core boost clocks, so that's cool. This is a great setup for single player games w/ DLSS and really long gaming sessions due to the very low power draw requirements of the setup.

That's true about the power shortage. The board limits the CPU power quite aggressively. Maybe to protect the whole system from prolonging the high current which can reduce the lifespan.

Nice mix - but i would really like you to try swapping that cooler for one from P330 tiny - should fit well and help with thermals on CPU nice (if it can help me cool my i7-8700T under it, while mixed with RX 6400, then for sure it will help with i5-8500T here) more aggressive fin stack and made out of cooper instead of just alu

Thanks. I'd love to try a better cooler too if I have chance to use a more power-hungry CPU. For this case, the temp look good for me. I think it's even acceptable for me with the most gentle fan curve in the board to trade off the noise.

Nice info, im trying to do the same, i have a M920q i5-9500T, i got the riser alreadym but no decide what to use: RX 550 or RX 6400, them i´ll put some holes in the case.

Hi there, i’m wondering if you advise me with something. I have an intel CPU: i7 7700K GPU: RTX A2000 Memory: 32GB RAM 2666Mhz Motherboard: ASUS H110M-R 500W PSU 1. 256GB SATA SSD 2. 500GB SATA HDD I’ve bought an RTX A2000 and everytime i put it in the pci e slot it’s a gen 3.0 x16 slot and i try to turn on the pc it the light on the power button would turn on for a split second and the fans would spin for the split second aswell and then the power just cuts off. I’m not sure if it’s the gpu the psu is new i just got it. Do you have any suggestions for what i should do?

Sorry for my slow repsonse. Honestly it's hard to predict what's wrong. However I can give you an advise. Every motherboards have ways to feedback us what's wrong via beep sounds, or blinking led (could be power button led in your case). I think you should check the motherboard mannual first (or PC mannual if it was an OEM PC) to find the error code encoded in the beep sound or blinking led.

i m happy to see that it did work out for you in the end!! huge performance boost you got. now your video card can shine. but still a bit stonger cpu maby a good choice for the future if you come along a cheap better one some day. have fun with your little beast! my ryzen 5 mini pc also looked a bit jealous when playing this video...

Wow night and day.

I have this same card with an amd 3600, mini itx motherboard, pico psu, and dell 300 watt power brick. I am saving for a 3D printer because no one makes a case small enough for my setup.

What about emulators? I would love to see how they perform as well.

When I was searching information about my own SFF PC it appears that there were multiple configurations, eg faster more powerful CPUs. This also affected the PSU supplied so it mught be worth checking what PSU you have and if there was a more powerful version available :)

Thanks for your information. The PSU is 300W so it must be ok. I think the limitation belongs to the motherboard which support at most 35W CPU and 50W GPU.

I think there is more oppirtunity here that we first beleived. In the case of CPUs an 8th or 9th gen in this package even if it is a 35W is enough power. The question remains in the GPU. There is a new RTX A1000 card on the market with 50W power if someone doesnot want to go with 70W cards. The A1000 has 8Gb memory and my hope is we will see 16Gb version. It might have less Cuda cores than A2000 but the at least the power is within the 50W.

I'm surprised by how much of the performance problems was caused by errant throttling behavior on the CPU side.

If you wanna go the SFF office PC route, just find an Intel I5 7th gen SFF PC and get a GTX 1050Ti/1650 low profile GPU. If you're lucky, you could get that for well under 200$.

Getting better thermals would involve you undervolting both CPU and graphics card. That should help both stay closer to their max frequency most of the time.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll tweak more with undervolting, maybe with a stronger CPU to find out its limit. For the current CPU, the temp and clock look fine for me.

I would like to know the name of the mini pc and know if it is better than a Lenovo ideapad 1 14iau7, I loved what you did in your video and if it is cheaper than my PC with the graphics included, I would like to know the prices (also do a test on fortnite)

It's based off a lenovo m720q, m920q which has a pcie slot available. The higher end version is lenovo p330

I purchased mine 2nd hand for about $100usd. It came with a i7-8700T. I found a cheap T1000 gpu for about $70 and installed it in the system. An a2000 is alot more expensive mind you.

​@Oden_The_Recreator Your laptop is newer and faster however it lacks a gpu. Have a look at the lenovo p330 or p340 as some of them come prebuilt with a gpu. Thats if you don't want to mess around with it. They also come with 2xnvme slots. The m720q and m920q only comes with 1 nvme slot. It really comes down to ur budget.

@@ll_spud My PC needs a GPU because it has a 12th gen processor and it does not have a fan for the processor and although in the future I wanted to try to do what is in this video, I am going to see the prices of both Mini pc and see its performance

it is definitely better but there is still a bottleneck i think whats holding it back now is the whole board. but good way to know if you have an existing device.

Can’t agree more. If it is a primary machine, it would be better to invest in the latest model.

I think an RX 6400 LP would be a better choice for this PC because it wouldn't need the insane under clock to function plus its a much cheaper card

meanwhile throttlestop didn't make my i5 2500, i7 3770, i7 4771 and i7 6700 any faster

Thanks for sharing. It only matters when CPU gets throttled, usually in compact PCs and laptops.

In the 1st video you dropped the gpu clocks with msi afterburner and you where on the right path to do an under volt, I mean you basically did it by lowering the curve but I'm sure that it can handle a more aggressive under volt, I have a 1070ti running 1700mhz at 775mv sipping just 90w, that's less than a gtx1060 for almost gtx1080 performance or A2000, It can do la 925mv at 1850 with 120w in games that are more demanding but when you compare the stock clocks and power usage of 170w+ its a massive improvement, so I'm sure that the A2000 can be an under volt beast since I remember that people where crazy about it since the mining era... Edit: you could also undervolt the cpu using throttlestop if I'm not wrong or the intel power app thing...

Thanks for your suggestion. The main problem belongs to the motherboard power limit. Even I set the power limit aggressively for the A2000 (50%), the clock still sometimes spikes (I guess a kind of PL2) and triggers the motherboard fuse, makes the machine crash. That's why I chose to cap the clock to prevent spiking.

@@thinhdora Try to find it's sweet spot, you can either keep it at 1500mhz and try to go lower with the voltage or go higher with the clocks, the gpu asic quality is mostly the decisive factor for how efficient it can be... Edit: you can press alt when moving the curve with the mouse, if you are not familiar search for undervolting with msi afterburner and go on the official msi blog guide page thingy at "Chapter 3a."

16:29 Why not print the case to make it flush with a2000. i.e. Print top part and bottom part between the gpu. Oreo sandwich where the middle part is the a2000 gpu black shroud. It will definitely make it thinner and sleeker!
