    Don't forget, the Pioneer Elite VSX LX505 has been the cheaper Onkyo RZ50 option. It doesn't get the ❤ it deserves. I admire how passionate Andrew is about cutting through the marketing BS. Over hyped features/products are really frustrating. Thank you for taking the slings and arrows while reviewing products for what they ARE and NOT for what they CLAIM to be.

    You both are creating a good community to discuss the tabu's in audio, and I have always appreciated that you review AV receivers, Tv's, soundbars, even thoug I just watch the Hi-Fi and AVR's. I started with AVR's prior stereo, and AVR's give you a ton of background to calibrate the sound in your system. Regarding the Wiim Amp, I tried it and compare it to a Michi X3 and Yamaha AVR V6 with a pair of LS50's fed by a Chord Qutest and I can definately say there there is a long way for the wiim to achieve high fidelity and power the ls50's (I mean, of course these are difficult and that is the point, to strech the wiim to its limits), regardless, I am keeping it for a bed room small setup because it is capable enough to enoy it. I completely like the approach on your channel at 100%. Congratulations.

    Hi Kristie - I truly appreciate how both you and Andrew are touting how well both tonality and price wise this brand is. There have been way too many haters here and in many other channels that keep hanging the HDMI issues of long ago over the brands head. Both Yamaha and Denon came out with defective 2.1 HDMI boards - no one spanks them for this.

    Always enjoyable listening to you two, and I agree with Andrew. If you're gonna market your product as a home theater solution, then be ready to have it compared to *any* other similarly-priced HT solution. Some people just get super-defensive about things they buy or plan to buy. All they want is for someone to validate their purchase/favorite brand with 100% glowing praise rather than tell them the truth about a product.

    Another Great One. Love the new format. Nice balance between Informative and Pointing out the Absurd. I'm a long time Onkyo receiver fan. It has always been a great "Bang for the Buck with ALL the Bells and Whistles" brand. I stepped up to Onkyo's higher brand "Integra" with a DRX-5.3 Receiver and haven't looked back. Have you heard, reviewed, or had plans to review any Integra product?

    HI Andrew! Long-time fan, first time commenter-- I have a WiiM amp paired with JBL A170s with an ELAC Sub1010 in my 12x20 Living room and It maxes out at or near 90db at 10' away (normal listening volume for me is 70-80db). The A170 is speced as a 6 ohm nominal with 89db sensitivity. I have had it for a few months and it hasn't gone into protect with or without the sub running. I have also used my Emotiva B1+ which are less sensitive with no issues and similar results. I would never claim that ithe wiim is the best of the best or a 'giant killer'. I own several amps that are superior, and they should be because they are much more expensive. My opinion is that you get what you pay for and I am not dissapointed so far and I think it delivers good value and ease of use for the price. It is also much smaller than a traditional AVR which a selling point for some. I am curious about what type of load that you were connecting it to that made it go into protect? Cheers, D

    All I have to say is the WiiM amp and the streamers are packed with features and for the price it’s very hard to find anything better. Yes the WiiM amp has its place , however I use it in my office for a 2ch setup to listen to music ,and also in my master bedroom connected to my tv . Both is more then enough volume and I really love the WiiM amp . I have the WiiM streamer plus pro connected to my 28k system and love it . I use WiiM as a multi room home audio solution and it even works with your echos . Again for the features that WiiM has, it’s very hard to beat it specially if you’re doing multi room audio and you want quality sound.

  • @gavriushka

    @gavriushka

    4 ай бұрын

    You seem to miss the point slightly. Andrew has said many times already that the streamers from that brand are lovely. Very competitive products. However, the Amp itself is just not. That’s why it was compared to Onkyo in the last weeks review and although I wouldn’t say it has less features, it might just have different features from WiiM that the latter doesn’t have. The problem is, that the Brand itself marketed their product completely wrong and created an insane amount of unfounded hype around it. And as soon as it was actually put properly to its paces, it feel flat. And for those who are buying not to listen in the near field situation or for high volume, it’s just not a good product. Onkyo will be better, only $100, maybe $200 will buy you a far more capable system that will be able to open the full potential of your system. It’s probably a very good amp for a desktop, it’s compact, has a bit of power and will work fine for that. But then also, you might ask why not just buy Kanto YU powered speakers, or Klipsch 5s? 1: probably cheaper for either one compared WiiM+speakers 2: better sound either way. So yeah…

    Excellent video again guys thanks. The comparison of the WiiM amp to the Onkyo is perfectly fair in a dollar to dollar face off. They are very different devices and are for very different uses so obviously there will be variations and differences. Those uses are not always what some folks expect. Either way, the only one who has to like the sound of your ... oh wait, nevermind. You made it clear in the video so absolutely agreed and still love the little WiiM amp for what it is but the Onkyo still looks great for it's own application.

    I saw a comment on your other video where a guy used the logic that because heaps of reviewers were saying the WiiM amp was bad that it was because there was some wide spread conspiracy perpetrated by other manufacturers, instead of the simpler explanation that the product just wasn’t that good. 😂

  • @andrewrobinsonreviews

    @andrewrobinsonreviews

    4 ай бұрын

    Yeah, I vaguely remember that comment too. I love how folks are so quick (and eager) to accept a bigger, more elaborate conspiracy when the simpler answer is often the right one. The simpler answer being; many of these brands flood the market with inexpensive products, pay or incentivize people to create content on these products, promote said content all over the Internet (with and without the creator's knowledge), offer deals or sales regularly to drive further traffic , rinse and repeat. To be clear, I don't fault WiiM for being good at marketing. Their ability to achieve a shocking level of market penetration in such a short period of time is something that maybe should be studied. But this notion that it EVERYONE ELSE besides WiiM (or the brand in question) is somehow to blame, at fault or up to something is laughable to the point of being insane. But then again, people love a good conspiracy, because it's often more entertaining than the truth.

    Facts (video reference, watch it!😊)! Andrew and “the real star of the show” Kristi are an amazing mesh for reviews! I started watching over a year ago when updating my home theatre and still come back for the awesome presentation, education and the love of hifi. Kristi and Andrew, when the inevitable nay sayers go too far, hang in there, stick together and keep rocking it! I imagine most of us that probably rarely comment are fans and even if we may disagree from time to time, we love your content and that your honesty and sincerity come through. Whenever you get close to feeling burnt out, take some time for yourselves and focus on one another. You guys are a rare match (that are a blast to watch) and keep fighting for that. 😊 My wife and I have been married 25 years now and it can be a fight sometimes to make it through all the crap 💩 in life and humans sometimes. I think I may have only commented once or twice, but felt strongly enough to spend the time to let you guys know there are many of us that appreciate you and see through the melodrama of the few irrational people!! Keep up the great work and put each other first. 👍

    Uh, I think Andrew’s premise of the Onkyo/Wiim comparison was: amps to amps aka apples to apples. Onkyo IS a better solution if only that it has authoritative sound that does NOT distort as easily as Wiim. If people have now shifted the value proposition perspective that Wiim is really JUST a streamer with option to amp … ok cool. and it could be compared BlueSound Node BUT hey let’s not pretend the Wiim wasn’t being touted as a kickass value AMP on YT reviews initially OR that it shouldn’t be taken to task for it when the ONKYO **is** a MUCH better value …as an amp 😤😤

    WiiM gained its rep as a good budget streamer, and I use the WiiM Pro for that...and really like it. It provides an inexpensive all-in-one solution for so many services, from Roon to Spotify. When looking at the pricing and consider the form factor, it is just silly that people would have an expectation of any type of hi-fidelity sound from the WiiM Amp. And Andrew, YOU BLOW EVERYTHING AWAY! Hilarious. Love your channel, thanks for the reviews.

    I am running the WiiM amp for my outdoor system, and it works great. It is powering 2 pairs of Polk Atrium 8 SDI in parallel (4 ohms/channel), with a Crown XLS1002 and a Dayton outdoor subwoofer, crossover set at 80 Hz. I airplay the audio from the outdoor Apple Tv to the WiiM amp for TV, and this solved a low volume issue I was having with a Bluesound Node when using the same way. Music sounds good, I've had it at reasonable levels with no shutdowns so far. This seems like a good use case in addition to a desktop or small living room 2.1 system.

    I saw part of the Onkyo 3100 review and thought it was a good idea to compare it to the Wiim amp. For me, the essence of a good review is to compare products that attempt to solve the same problem but come at it from different directions. I watch because Andrew has a broad knowledge base and can make those comparisons. I'm sure the Wiim works for a non-critical listener who wants an easy-to-use solution. Anyone who has been around audio equipment would be more than a little curious about the Onkyo's sound quality. Everyone needs to remember that all products have limitations and as a consumer I just want to know what they are and see how they align with my needs.

    I think everything you said comparing the two makes sense. I think it’s crazy that wiim markets the amp for home theater. Now using as an option or tv solution to opt out of using a sound bar makes sense. It also would be an amazing solution to basically take a passive speaker and turn it into a simple solution almost like a powered speaker … idk it seems like the amp has a lot of potential, If it could only deliver on what the marketing says.

    Ideally you'd pass through the decoding (which is an option but it's usually not worth it for other reasons), but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things with a source like a music video. If you start listening to higher fidelity sources and think/know/whatever that you can hear the difference, then you start running into issues.

    All this is why I absolutely hate it when I see the "giant killer" or " this product will destroy X", because that is usually looking at either a number of features on this supposed giant killer, but not on how properly those features work, and often not looking at build quality and most of all not knowing what I'm personally looking for in a product. And yeah, on the internet we seem to like thinking other people are idiots for their choices. I've often heard people referring to new car buyers as dumb and supposedly the cleaver people are those who buy used cars, and I think to myself, "...but used cars are not made 'used', someone had to own it first". Thanks guys for doing great work, keep doing what you do.

    @MrRocktuga4 ай бұрын

    I love how you guys keep calling out manufacturers, and mainly, helping potential customers. Here's a few reasons why your WiiM Amp review had such a great weigh for me: - When a new product is launched and everyone is reviewing it, chances are that the manufacturer gave away several samples, which isn't bad by itself, but it certainly can refrain some reviewers from telling it like it is. I'm not saying that it always happens, I'm only saying that it _can_ happen, as the reviewer wouldn't like to be excluded from the next new product release; - You were almost alone at identifying this problem, which might be the result of "bad luck", or the result of many reviewers not testing it properly. Considering that WiiM knows about this issue, I find it a bit unlikely that you were the only ones with "bad luck"... 😉 - This shows once again that power is not equal if a lot of variables are left out of the specs. With any amplifier from any well-known brand from the last 30 years, that power rating would easily drive any loudspeaker with a complex load, unless we were talking about something very exotic (along the line of some Wilson Audio Infinity IRS and others that cost as much as a house). Some newer and cheap class D amplifiers have almost no headroom for what was called "dynamic power", and that may be a part of the reason why some cheap class D amps sound thin and relatively weak. Because they are. If you're using a Crown XLS digital amp with HiFi speakers, chances are that you're going to exceed the loudspeaker max excursion (or worst) before the amp hits its power limits, but that's because of how much power they have, plus the fact that they're built to handle 2 Ohm loads all day long. That's certainly not the case with these cheap Chinese amps. - People love the idea of budget gear beating or being equal to more expensive stuff. I understand that, because I also love when a product delivers more than its price would suggest. But that's now usually the case with cheap Chinese amps, sorry. A more expensive product may leave more profit on the table for the whole chain, but unless you're talking about high-end products, that's not that much. Price is also very dependant on scale, and big manufacturers like Onkyo/Pioneer have the scale to build things cheaper, while integrating the usual distribution channel. These are called facts, and WiiM isn't even a direct to consumer brand. You can find it on Amazon and several other stores - Then there's the whole SINAD squad, which tens to rate and have very strong opinions on products that were tested on a bench. While those tests are important to understand how closely they match to the manufacturers claims, consumers buy amplifiers to drive real loudspeakers, not dummy loads! I do have the WiiM Pro Plus streamer, and it does what it says on the tin. No regrets at all about buying it. And I also have the Onkyo RZ 50 on another system, which ASR didn't recommend at all, but it has been driving several speakers, including my "not so easy to drive" Monitor Audio GX300 without a sweat! Guess what was the review that I valued, and which one I ignored...🙄😉 What I mean by this is that things do need perspective, and you're great at providing it. You called out B&W when they made harsh sounding loudspeakers, you called out Naim when the performance of a "high end" product was anything but high-end, and I surely expect that you call out any cheap product for under delivering everytime that it does. That's honest reviewing IMHO!

    This whole discussion can be summed up in one word, SHRINKFLATION! Watts today are just not as big as they used to be. I own a WIIM Amp that I use in a desktop system. I really like the WIIM Amp in this application - it has a nice tone and plays plenty loud for desktop listening. But, in my opinion it is not suitable to be used in a main listening system in anything but a really small room. I have recently been pulling out some of my retired hi fi equipment and connecting them up into new systems. Most recently, I connected up a NAD3155 that I originally purchased around 1990 with a pair of Phase Technology PC 60 mk II speakers (also from around 1990) and a WIIM Pro Plus as a source. On paper, the WIIM Amp with 60 watts @8 ohms should be slightly more powerful than the NAD3155+Pro Plus, which is rated 55 watts @8 ohms. Yea, right! The NAD stomps all over the WIIM Amp every day and twice on Sunday. In a movie analogy, the NAD is Godzilla and the WIIM Amp is Tokyo! The WIIM Amp is a good product, but it needs to stay in its own lane.

    Another great video by the Dynamic Duo! I understand that the audio industry needs to doa better job of addressing the needs of the diferent generations. And I would consider more compact units IF they were soundly built by companies that understand physics and how you cannot get around the laws of physics by putting wimpy electronics in a scenario where they are not designed to be. Powered speakers, as suggested by Andrew & Kristi is part of the answer if you wish to miniaturize home entertainment electronics. I think we need the big companies to design and offer compact units for the individuals that want them as a viable alternative for the under 35 crowd.

    The single largest issue Onkyo has ever had was the BGA style connection for it's audio processing chips (primarily the DTS, but others as well).. the unit would heat up which wasn't a problem.. but when it cooled down, the rapid change caused the solder connection to micro-fracture... these would accumulate/compound over time and eventually the processor would simply be unable to process the incoming audio signal... this process has been addressed and is no longer an issue

    Hi Andrew and Kristi, thank you for the great show! i’m a new subscriber and loved this week’s review of the Onkyo. I actually purchased it and coming tomorrow. My question is: on the last Unplugged show, Andrew mentioned that some receivers are not good with having a phantom center. Can I run the SR3100 without a center for movies and be happy? Or is a center really recommended? Not planning on doing rear surrounds nor height, just want a simple, less wire setup. I have JBL stage a170s btw. Thank you!!

    The Onkyo 3100 doesn't appear to have an issue with downsampling multi-channel mixes to stereo the way some AVRs do, so you should be good to go! Don't overuse the dialog enhancement feature if you're trying to boost vocal clarity in certain situations.

    Thanks for the answer! I was also thinking of the Wiim Amp before I watched your video. The thing that made me go for this is the ability to just add more. Add a center if I want. Add surrounds or height. Have multiple HDMI 2.1 with just 1 wire going to TV for eArc. This is amazing. Thanks again and appreciate you both!!
