Quick solution, substitute x=y-3 and rearrange to (y^2-1)(y^2-9)-9=y^4-10y^2=0, which yields y=0 or y=0 or y=±√10 and x=y-3=-3 or -3 or -3±√10
-3 guessed it pretty early on. the others you have to calculate, nice problem.

when the narator gets to u^2 + 8u - 9 = 0 - he did not realize that that is directly factorable to (u-1)(u+9) - this dumps the steps of 8u = 9u-u substitution - so 2 steps could have been skipped. - and x^2 + 6x + 9 = (x+3)^2 - more steps to skip
