A new plan for Ukraine to defeat Putin | Professor Anthony King

“All the analysis points towards an operational shift in the battlefield. Ukraine are encouraged to adopt a more radical approach.”
Ukraine must adopt a “bold defensive operation” by withdrawing to urban towns Kramatorsk and Slovyansk to “inflict damage on the Russian forces more effectively”, says Professor Anthony King.

    I have one simple question for our political leaders, "How do you expect the Ukrainian Armed Forces to fight like NATO while we refuse to give /sell/loan them the platforms they need in order to fight in our style? Why are we expecting NATO air superiority from a country without any of the necessary equipment?"

    Have I misunderstood the learned gentleman? Didn't Ukraine mount an urban defence, like he suggests, in Avdiivka? The Russians simply flattened it with FAB glide bombs, as they've been doing to Chasiv Yar, and starting to do to Kharkiv. Until Ukraine has the kit to take out the FAB launch platforms, this tactic will continue.

    That’s a good point, however I thing the analyst’s point is it’s better to hunker down in a large fortified city than a frontline village with little to no fortification. In the case of avdiivka, it has been on the frontline since the full scale invasion and is a lot smaller and easier to take than say Kharkiv.

    I think you make a good argument here and I see it differently. The Fab bombs are causing a lot of problems and they need to be dealt with by contending with the planes that deliver them. It is still better to defend in cities versus just open terrain or giving the cities to Russia without exacting a huge cost through attrition.

    The evidence seems to show that the Russians have most problems and suffered the highest differential casualties trying to get TO the towns. Once in the built up area, odds are more even. Once into Bakhmut and Avdivka, the Russians moved through them quite quickly compared to their difficulties getting to them. Urban fighting is a great equalizer and a "meat grinder" for both sides and Ukraine can't afford to suffer casualties at the same rate as a much more numerous opponent.

    Depends on a number of factors. It is highly likely that Ukraine has subterranean means to keep larger towns supplied. If you are talking about larger cities, you do not want to decimate large buildings because that gives your enemy excellent places to hide and take up defensive positions when you inevitably send in your infantry.

    It seems like this is a way to get the NATO style fighting which requires congregating large numbers of soldiers at one common spot. The Americans (some of them, anyway) went on and on about this the first year of the world. Eventually it was agreed that, without air superiority, it just doesn't work and the Ukrainians gave up on it. So making sure Ukraine has air superiority is critical to prevent the Russians from sending their gliding bombs to flatten the "common spot" (i.e., fortress town). That is in fact the tactic the Russians are using right now. The other concern I have is that Russia wants to "negotiate" an end to fighting based on Russia keeping all lands they control at the time the negotiations begin. Giving them MORE land as a result of the recommended withdrawal would mean that Ukraine would lose all that land if they are forced by US and NATO politicians to agree to allowing the Russians to set a border that benefits Russia the most. These two problems are fixable, I believe. But any plan to execute Prof. King's recommended "active defence" would need to include dealing with the problems of air support and refusing to accept the Russian proposal for ending the fighting. FYI. I believe that NATO should bite the bullet and provide the air support that is needed by Ukraine to have the best chance of winning. That is, NATO forces could and should act as an Iron Dome and limit air attacks by the Russians on Ukrainian lands. However, I am a big fan of the Ukrainian attacks on Russian bases and oil storage areas. These "low and slow" drone attacks with some missiles included are analogous in my mind to David's slingshot strikes against Goliath. In other words, I do not believe that Ukrainian should only fight a defensive war. NATO should not stop Ukraine from doing what they currently do so effectively. Be helpful but not hurtful is the approach NATO should be taking viz a viz Ukraine.

    An attritional retrograde was the NATO strategy circa 1958-1990. It plays to the strengths of the Abrams, Bradley, Leopard, Challenger. I suspect the Russians have neither the infantry or the armored vehicles to wage that kind of war.

    While Ukrainians used to conduct defense on the front line., now with the Russians using glided bombs, Ukrainians are forced to also conduct defense in depth. “We had to lease it and pay it all back”. That’s not really correct. The terms of lend lease were so generous that the bulk of the aid was essential gifted. For example: “1946, the post-war Anglo-American loan further indebted Britain to the United States. Lend-Lease items retained were sold to Britain at 10% of nominal value, giving an initial loan value of £1.075 billion for the Lend-Lease portion of the post-war loans. Payment was to be stretched out over 50 annual payments, starting in 1951 and with five years of deferred payments, at 2% interest.” Note that inflation in the USA over this period was 690%. The compound interest would only accrue to 169% so the loan was basically reduced by inflation every year until towards the end of the period the remaining balance was reduced over 75%.

    I think the theory is that they wish to give a little preview, early on, as to what the guest will be talking about, to give the viewer a chance to watch only the videos that they are interested in. It's like a movie trailer, in other words. However, I agree with you that this practice is a repetitive waste since we basically have already committed to watching a video once we start playing it, and thus have little need for a preview to entice us further, and can bail out at any time without penalty anyway. But they seem rather committed to this practice at the Times, so I think we just have to get used to it.

    Question? What wood it hurt for French troops to help defend Ukraine cities to free up more Ukrainians soldiers to the front lines, how wild that escalate anything? It’s already escalated, Ukrainians need more man power, French troops could be a huge help to just defend, no front line actions, anyone?

  • @ytsm

    @ytsm

    Do you know How tiny the French military is compared to Ukraine's? France only has 200k active personnel compared to Ukraine's 1.25 million. If France committed 10℅ of their forces - at the current rates of attrition - it would only last a handful of months. Besides, France would never commit to sending in troops without an agreement from the US that they'll step in, should Putin retaliate.

    I don't know if anyone has noticed the emphasis both sides have placed on capturing OR regaining territory? The reason is Meerkat simple! "Artillary'--- is a Spectrum of weapons from mortars (300 metres+?) to ballistic missiles (eg gliding bombs and ATACMS---100+Km up to 300 Km plus! And---short and long range drones. If a country fighting for it's survival has any respect for the people of it's second largest city, it would want the front to be held firstly where it is----or better still pushed back to the pre-2014 border! Ukraine is a Rottweiler----Putin's Russia is a Jackal. Ukraine is it's own best expert---it just needs F16'S!!! or similar! The gift that keeps on coming?

    Michael Clark was on Sky News yesterday telling the Russian what they ought to do against Ukraine up in Kharkiv and to the south. Even the woman host commented at the end mentioning that Clark was more or less telling Russia how to win the war against Ukraine. I wonder what the analytics from Sky News KZread Channel with respect to how many views there are from moscow and from the geography of russia over the past two years? I even had one more Muscovites viewer on my KZread Channel than I did from my own hometown. (Thank you hometown.) I've carefully listened and watched Michael Clark over the years of his narrating what is happening in Ukraine. His last commentary was disappointing. This Times Radio commentator says more or less, it would be awful to do what he ends up doing. He says more or less because he is not in Ukraine at the front lines and in the meetings with Ukrainian generals, and because he not the one at "risk" in giving advice about what Ukraine should do, he gives his view of what Ukraine should do or not do. I wonder what the analytics of Times Radio KZread Channel shows as to how many russians and muscovites have watched its channel since the war started and at the present time? I have commented yesterday that is was good that Ukraine's military was not taking its focus off of Crimea and the Donbas by recent strikes. I'll listen to this commentor again.
