A Neat Trick For Cutting Fret Slots

Музыка

Back in the really old days we would spend hours cutting fret slots. Then someone gave Matt a radial arm saw that had been sitting in a garage, unused, for years. Combine that with a super slim saw blade and some fret slotting templates and you got yourself a slick set-up that is fast, dangerous and sexy… just like all the tools we use here in the shop.

Thank you for all the great videos. Very interesting and so helpful to other guitar-building enthusiasts. One comment though for woodworkers that are not used to using a RadialArm saw: dont ever let your hand off of the saw pull handle. Its the most important safety lesson for a potentially dangerous saw. That blade can roll towards you and your fingers lightening fast if the blades teeth get a chance to dig in.Thanks again to TT Guitars for taking the time to share your knowledge.

I use the same Stewmac fret slot templates but use a table saw sled with an index pin. I actually really like the idea of radial arm I just don't have room for it, the table saw serves many other purposes and with only a 2 car garage as my shop every inch of space counts. Love the channel.

That is so slick, and fast too! It's so weird! I was just getting ready to sit down and cut some slots in a fret board and your video popped up! The radial arm saw and jig makes it a breeze. Unfortunately, I'm sittin here doing it the hard way...by hand! Oh well, maybe someday I'll get one of those setups! Thanks for the cool video!👍😎🎸🎶

Hi Paul, Thanks for watching, I go about half way through the fret board blank. You might have to chase some of the slots by hand after you put on your radius. I actually like to do that so the fret slots are even with the fret wire. I'm sure it doesn't matter but I think its cool. Hope that helps brotherman.

Cool. Now. Let's return to a paperknife and thick red lines from a markerpen. I used ductape to transfer the spacing from an SG. If it is not accurate well... I'll have to refine my method.

That thing has a really long draw - do you ever cut 3 or 4 at a time? That would be a great time saver! And hey - is that fretboard granadillo? If so, and you guys like a little experimentation, try treating one with a solution of ferrous nitrate and then let it sit in the sun (or hit it with a heat gun). I will look just like rosewood! Basically it's a chemical reaction with the tannin in the wood, so it penetrates deeper than a stain. Here's some pics of a Gibson I treated: imgur.com/a/0p6A94o (that is 3 "coats" and one day in the Florida sun) Great wood - I just don't like how "pink" it looks sometimes. Full disclosure - no idea about longevity here, but after a year it still looks great on the "test subject" I've got a ton of the ferrous nitrate powder (a spoonful makes enough to treat 15 square feet of wood) - lemme know if you guys want me to send you some!

I thought about doing that with the Richlite stuff but it is pretty hard on the saw blade. That fretboard is black poison wood. We use granadillo pretty regularly. Did you see the video we did with Guitar Wood Experts about roasted granadillo? That stuff is really cool
