Sakuraba gave his back in every single match in Pride FC, against very high level jiu-jitsu black belts. Nobody was able to strangle him. This was already back in 1990s. Not only that, he even submitted Carlos Newton (via Kneebar), and Renzo Gracie (via Doublewrist Lock) while they were on his back.

It's how I became comfortable being in bottom side control after watching his videos on escapes and guard recovery using the technical stand up principle to recover guard instead of the hip escape. "...it also confuses a lot of people when they don't recognize the defensive patterns..." I immediately thought of this phrase Bruce Lee stated in one of those old-school manuals..." if you show your opponent something they've never seen before, the technique is essentially invisible." I paraphrased slightly but you get the idea. Part of the power of any system is knowing what's coming next and using that to your advantage. Give 'em a little David Copperfield action and all of a sudden few questions start popping up in their head...this is good for you.

@@Funkyfm9 Well, but I think that's Hall's point. Against good guys, it's bad to give up your back. But against GREAT guys, it's still bad to give up your back, but it's better than the alternative, because at least it creates movement and a scramble, and you have some power. Against the GREAT guys, it really doesn't help you any to just get back to a "bad, but slightly better" position, if that position is going to lead you right back to where you were.

While I'm not at the top of the food chain in grappling, I can say that I've frustrated and escaped from many decent Black Belts with Hall's turning away sequences. Bernardos hips were off the ground, standing on his toes. Let's see him sit up like that with a simple head & arm side control with the knees tucked on the ball of the shoulder and above the hips, with a resisting side control opponent, that's also wedging with his elbows. Hall would then also have to get his hips in first as well...

I've received so much flack over the last decade for giving up my back as easily as I do. If I had a penny for every time I've heard, "turtle is a transition, not a position"... But it's forced me to get good at defending my back. And unless I'm face down on my belly I'd much prefer someone have my back than have me pinned - especially from mount. I know there are pros and cons to everything. And giving up your back in a striking situation could be devastating. But from a strict grappling standpoint it can be an advantage. People tend to put blinders on when chasing subs they're not quite getting. And when you take them far enough down that road they'll often expose themselves to a counterattack.

I would agree except if someone has your back and gets the figure 4 bodylock with their legs. But otherwise , yes escaping someone on your back (not belly down ) is easier than escaping a side control pin or escaping north south or escaping mount

@@hermixtonen I haven't yet had the pleasure of being tied up in a world class figure 4 - which I'm sure is challenging to escape. But at the level I train at I often sub those who catch me in it with a footlock. And if they defend the footlock they give up enough control to escape. But I get what you're saying.

The problem with turtle is that you can get your face punched in. In pure grappling, its only a problem if you shell up instead of trying to escape and attacking from turtle almost immidietly. If you just lay there and shell up, the other guy will get something usually

@@guest0046let’s be honest, you’re gonna get your face punched in if you are on bottom, no matter what position you choose. The point is to keep moving so you can get out of bottom altogether. That’s the only way to survive at all (unless you are in a neutral position like Bottom guard - and that’s the best guard offers, a NEUTRAL position.). That’s not my opinion, I got that directly from Chris Haueter, Rickson’s black belt. I spoke with Chris at length about this.

I guess it is kind of like boxing if you keep your defense up you can move through bad positons without getting caught in them and make it to a better position. I think that is normal and good. Just be prepared for the back take and block it with the transition. Lol fuck being in half guard that is almost just as bad as being side mounted.
