Puck and Oberon put the love potion on Demetrius' eyes while he sleeps (having figured out that Lysander is enchanted instead). Demetrius, waking, sees Helena and falls in love with her - but Helena believes the young Athenians are mocking her, and Hermia, confused, believes that Helena has stolen Lysander.
