inspector wears skirts 1 was a huge surprise for me and became an instant favourite of hk cinema. Skirts 2 was extremely low budget and the action was abysmal and almost non existant. However, i still really enjoyed the comedy and the characters and cuteness, theres just something so charming about it all. And i dont regret buying all 4 from 88 films, perfect escapism.

I've been holding off on 3 and 4 because I was let down by 2. I heard the action gets better in 4, so I'll eventually have to check the rest out haha.

Someone in my Facebook group mentioned that the second film is very heavy on goofy comedy, which honestly sounds perfect for me, I love goofy Hong Kong comedy.

The first Stephen Chow movie I ever saw was GOD OF COOKERY, which is probably why it remains my favourite. I saw it at the late, much-lamented Chinatown Cinema in Sydney in the late 90s. That place was amazing. The programming was always a double feature for $11. Sometimes the movies matched (I saw RICH AND FAMOUS and TRAGIC HERO together) or it was just two random movies. My most prized memory of that place, though, is the day I spent an hour convincing the owner to let me buy an original FIST OF LEGEND one sheet poster off him. Alas, it closed and initially became one of those dodgy bootleg VHS rental places. Now it's club, I think.

This is great, thanks for sharing your memories. That sounds like a great place. I wish I had access to something like that when I was first falling in love with these movies when I was a teenager. Unfortunately I lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere and the closest Chinatown was literally in another country (Canada). I can't wait to check out more Stephen Chow. He cracks me up so hard. I have heard great things about God of Cookery from others.

@@perryfan49 When I saw GoC I was in an audience packed with Chinese people. So a lot of the verbal and cultural gags they were roaring at went over my head. But the movie is so full of amazing visual comedy I don't feel like I was cheated in any way.

Damn, those colds can really bring out the filth. I know from personal experience while watching 'The Karate Kid' remake. Jackie Chan yelling 'Jacket off!' sounded like 'Jack it off!', which made me burst out laughing because everybody would be the master of the hidden 37th Chamber of Shaolin. I mean, you gotta master the basics.😇

@@hkcinemasociety I watched this movie when I was a kid. Later I became a huge fan of Tony Leung through Infernal Affairs, Hero, and most of all his collaborations with Wong Kar Wai. It wasn't until recently that I realized, "wait, that silly guy who reminded me of Stephen Chow in Hero Beyond was TONY LEUNG?" He gave such a different performance there than what I saw later. I haven't watched any of the other comedy roles he's been in, but apparently he's actually done a good number of them. I'd be interested to see if the Hoglord would like this film actually.

I know you asked this and I don't think anyone answered in the comments. Yes Executioners from Shaolin is almost the same as Clan of the white lotus, which is almost a sequel/remake that came out 3 years later. Both films are superb. Out of the all the films in Shawscope volume 1, Dirty Ho takes some beating, the choreography is so brilliant, funny and inventive, probably my 2nd favourite Shaw brothers movie.

I've definitely seen the fight scenes from it, but maybe I just watched them on KZread? I'm very excited to check it out

Angela Mao and George Lazenby also starred together in a film called Stoner. Originally it was meant to be Lazenby and Bruce Lee in Stoner but after Bruce Lee's passing the part was changed to a female character and played by Angela Mao.

If it says "pinky violence" yes, there is rape, lots of rape, the genre should be called "rapey violence." Despite this that Zero Woman movie is worth a watch, stylish and cynical, see if you can find a redeeming character in that movie, I'm not sure there is one.

Hong Kong movies are probably only about 20% or so of what I watch. I keep a healthy balance so I don't get bored of any one thing, because I get bored very easily, so I need to mix it up. There are times when I get a little burnt out on the reviewing and I take a break. But it's been about five years at this point and I'm not feeling like I need to throw the channel away yet, so I think things are going OK.
