A Message to All Aggressive Skaters | RUFFCUT S1E12

Спорт

Please understand that before you start doing grinds, throw yourself down stairs or ride transitions, you need to be a decent skater first. Unfortunately, I keep seeing people who do that stuff but can't really skate fakie. There are many, politically correct ways to put it: It doesn't look controlled, it's a bit dangerous around objects or other people, you're limiting yourself... but to be honest, I just find it fucking embarrassing.
RUFFCUT is my vlog series. It's not cinematic, it's not perfect and what I say only makes sense half of the time. I massively enjoy making these because I can take some of the pressure off by default. I hope it's also fun to watch! I post an episode every other day and the first season will include 20 episodes.
You can support me on / rollife by joining the SQUAD!

This was one of the things I love skating backwards. It is a lot of fun. Glad I kept this skill. Now I gotta get back to looking over my switch shoulder.

It's just so much cooler when you're skating backwards than when you're skating forwards... and if people then can see that you actually feel comfortable going any which way, you automatically send off a really cool vibe!

@@rollife agreed! Kids in my neighborhood that see me skate forward and backwards dig it. Hoping to draw some youth into the sport. Even if it is just free rolling, blading is blading! Cheers Homie!🍻

Gatekeeping at its finest. This isn't an activity with defined rules and no one is forcing you to watch anyone else. Skating is an art. There is absolutely no wrong way to do art.

In many sports you need certain skills before you can actually do them. Call it gatekeeping, call it elitist... I call it reality.

I am going to have to respectfully disagree with your reality sir. Your comment about sports is correct but sports have points and a clearly defined way to earn those points. 1 point for a goal, 6 points for a touchdown. How many points is a soul grind worth? A unity? Skating isn't a sport its an art and expression of ones self. Do I think it looks better when people know how to do it yes i do. However in something like skating where there its supposed to be about freedom and fun, does it really matter? If a guys face lights up every time he does a royal, no one should get to dump on him because he can't do something else. No one gets to steal a person's joy in something that at the end of the day has absolutely zero effect on either person.

I agree on the fun part, totally. But if we're talking art, expression or aesthetics, it just doesn't look good if you don't have control. Look man, I'm just here to provide some inspiration and maybe spark up a conversation. I love the fact that people discuss this now because self reflection is important. And maybe a few guys actually will learn how to skate properly because of this and that's all I could ask for. I know it might be a bit intimidating every time I share a strong opinion like this but I think that's what aggressive skating is. I was definitely intimidated when I first started aggressive even though I played hockey before and could skate every which way perfectly fine... Have a nice day and thanks for your contribution!

Learning how to skate like a hockey player simply separates you from the rest. Just seeing peeping stepping and wobbling instead of keeping nice steady and balanced strides makes me understand your skill level. Shit...having control could also save your life! If I didn’t know how to powerslide, I’d be dead by now lol.

At the end of the day it's partly for aesthetic reasons but definitely also partly for safety reasons! Also: I know it looks easy until you put someone next to me who can't really skate properly. It's hugely underestimated/underrated and yet so important.

Absolutely true! During lockdown that was one of my goals: Getting the basics switch and regular, e.g. going switch fakie on a trail and also in the miniramp, doing switch 180s or gazelles and crossovers, learing all kinds of switch stalls, etc. It also helps for aggressive, because not being able to go switch fakie is so limiting. I still can't do it all well e.g. switch fakie 180 for an inspin for example, is still awkward, but as I have a basic foundation now, I can at least have a go at it and it doesn't feel impossible.

lmao this is great i just started skating again and all i am working on is control and mastering riding. My skateboard background has taught me to do everything both sides early so you don't regret it later. Big wheels are so much fun was trying to get a RB 80 DA but couldn't find it so i got twister edge X

In skateboarding there are also these people who try to do a kickflip and don't actually have a solid ollie. It's the same thing everywhere - you need to master the basics first. Twister edge is also a very good choice! I hope you have a great time skating 🖖

I can’t disagree, but I don’t agree either. Personally I love fakie, I love bowl carving fakie, fakie airs, I push anyone I coach to get as comfortable with fakie as they are going forwards. Why? Because so many of our tricks come from fakie, because sometimes it’s just easier to come out of a trick or a mistake fakie. Where I disagree is that anyone should be embarrassed by being uncomfortable in it and thus choosing not to focus their attention on it. You’ve gotta consider that some people just skate for the hell of it. Not everyone has a competitive mindset and there’s nothing wrong with that. You do you for sure, but that’s my two cents. I’d love to push people the way I push myself 🤷🏻‍♂️

Interesting point. I don't disagree with the premise that improving fundamental skills will make you a better skater, and i am now going to practice fakie crossovers! 🤣 But does it really matter how people skate as long as they are safe and having fun? Skating is all about freedom and enjoyment and there isn't a rule book. Maybe tone it down a bit, the condescending delivery is detracting from a fundamentally great point about doing the basics well.

  • @rollife

Yeah I know the tone was harsh, but it had to be. Because if it wasn't, probably no more than 200 people would've gotten the message. Sometimes you just need to be a bit loud in order to be heard. And the whole positivity-only thing starts to piss me off 😅🤷🏼‍♂️

Couldn't agree more! Always build your basic inline skating skills prior to aggressive skating. I see so many people trying to skate park and do grinds that can barely inline skate. During this quarantine period I have done a lot more big wheeling around and now that I am back at the park I am feeling even better trying new creative things.

I agree that people could be better aggressive skaters if they worked on their fundamentals more, but calling them embarrassing and telling people they can't do things is just elitist gate-keeping. People are allowed to have fun however they want, you don't make the rules and neither does anyone else.
