Skating Is NOT a Sport! | RUFFCUT S1E3

Is skating a sport? If not, what is it then?
I recently heard somebody say that skating is not supposed to be a sport - it's a lifestyle. It kept me thinking. Today I would like to share my thoughts on the topic and hopefully initiate a little discussion with you guys so that I can walk away with a better answer.
RUFFCUT is my vlog series. It's not cinematic, it's not perfect and what I say only makes sense half of the time. I massively enjoy making these because I can take some of the pressure off by default. I hope it's also fun to watch! I post an episode every other day and the first season will include 20 episodes.

It is a lifestyle, everything in my life is related to skating like if I wanted to buy clothes I'll think does it feel comfortable on skates I'll buy it if not then no. All my friends I met on skates. My best job is a job that still gives time to skate. The first thing I open when I open my phone or go online is skating pages. I can't look at an architecture without seeing it as a spot..... and a lot more. It is the center of everything besides family.

I like to think it's like every other "SPORT" something you can compete with, and a lifestyle. This can't be any more true with "skating" or "powerblading" or "urban skating" because there are events that people compete in with better styles of skating but there are also those that use it as a fun way to commute through their every day lives and it becomes their hobby as well as a resource in life for escape and practicality. It is both a sport and a lifestlye. For many in the world, the sport they do, is their lifestyle.

I don't really care about the definition. I care more about being allowed to enter shops, malls and other public places in those skates, without people freaking out and telling me that it's not a skatepark when I'm just quietly rolling at 2km/h. And that edit at the beginning of the video - that's a really good filming! Looking very cinematic 👍🏼

Thanks man! Oh yeah, I get kicked out of stores and malls more often than I get kicked out from a street spot 😅 Even though I have 100% control on my skates and I would never run something/somebody over in the store... Just casually keep ignoring the signs and don't take it personally when somebody says something 😅🖖

I quit sports for skating and I hated everything that went with organized sports but loved what I took away from hockey for my skating. I love the freedom we have and that's why I would have to say it's a life style for sure

The structure in other sports is what makes it so much less of a hassle but the freedom in skating makes every hassle worth it...

I play other sports and I think athletically, at least, I get as much joy out of winning a baseball game, for example, as I do out of having a good skate session. The difference, however, is that I think about skating every single day of my life. There’s not a moment where I couldn’t stop whatever I was doing and have a conversation with someone about the intricacies and forms of rollerblading. I want to only wear, support, and represent skate brand clothing... Skating challenges me in a way that no other sport does. The only adversary to overcome is myself, my fears, my fitness, my assumptions and biases, etc. Now, perhaps this is all because I’ve chosen this sport as my internal motivation. I’m sure other people get lifelong guidance out of many other athletic ventures. But for me, skating is so much more than any other game that I participate in. It’s certainly a way of life.

Interesting view, thanks for sharing! So we could say: As you're doing it, it's a sport. But because it's always there, even when you're not skating, it becomes a lifestyle... I also agree that there might be plenty of people who consider basketball to be their lifestyle. There's just one difference for me: Basketball is played on the court and once you leave the court, there's no playing basketball. Skating can be literally anywhere. You can go shop groceries on skates, you can go for a skate right out of your office in your lunch break... There are other sports like that. Running for example. You can run anywhere at any time. That's a lifestyle as well if you're really into it.

Really interesting insight. Im not too sure either. I think it probably is a sport in some senses of the word, as individuals can compete agsinst eachother in a structured way if they wish eg FISE. But then again you csn also go street skating with the homies and do your own thing. I think you touched on another important point though which is what should we call this activity we do? Personally i think its time we dropped rollerblading as a descriptive term and stick to calling it Inline Skating. Ricardo Lino made a really interesting vlog on this topic. What do you think?

Definitely. Part of our identity crisis is the lack of a generally accepted name. Of course it would be better to unify it, but how are you gonna explain to a 35 year old dude, who's been rollerblading his whole life, that he HAS to call it inline skating now? As long as there are no rules, there's also no rule on how it's called...

If you get paid it’s a sport. If you go out and skate for fun. It’s a life style.

Skating is an art form. That's the number one reason why I do it. The fitness is a positive side effect.

@@rollife Haha true that! But I think others don't know it's a creative outlet for them. They just do it but really they are expressing themselves artistically.

It is true that skating lacks rules and structure. But...it is still a sport. I have been a college level runner and a pretty decent cyclist in my past. But the discovery of skating has changed my view of all of that. I do skating BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE STRUCTURE. I am done trying to lower my 5k run time and my century bike race time. Skating doesn't have any of that crap and you know when you have improved despite not having a faster time or higher jump or whatever. The first time you land fakie off an obstacle you never thought you could, the exhilaration does not require someone else's approval for it to be amazing.
