I hate to say Jack is incorrect about Rope Lighters. The rope is a piece of slow match and does not need lighter fluid to operate, it is light and simply just glows as an ember until extinguished.

i agree with you just where close to post the same thought i collect rope lighters from the time they where used with a match ... such like match safe /vesta cases combinated with a tinder/rope also cigarette cases they where used in the time 1880 to arround 1910 the rope was used in fact matches where expensive and it was elegant to pas the glowing rope case over to give some one a light. it did changed when . Carl Auer von Welsbach invented the modern flintstone this was the start for the modern gasoline lighters.

@@henriktress2063To add further to your posts ,soldiers would make these lighters from brass bullet casings ,guys in prisons also would make them with an old piece of wood and rope from a mop, they were allowed to purchase wheels and flints in the prison stores . I personally during my service carried a zippo along with a flint match everywhere I went even at sea .

I`ve seen a Dunhill Rollagas pipe lighter with the flame exiting the front for easier lighting of pipes but apart from one example i can`t see any others, could you confirm whether they make a modified nozzle in order to change a standard Rollagas lighter into a side flame version?

Cool video. Love my hobnail dunhill. I use it every day. Not bad for a 50 year old lighter. Would've love to have seen one of the famous aquarium lighters ❤

I’m sorry but the “first lighter that could be used one handed” is absolute balarky. They just have the first *patented* lift arm lighter. Any serious collector collecting before the 1920s (1923 is the year dunhill launched their very first in handed operable lighter known as the “unique” and this was also a “rope lighter”) knows that there are many very unique lighters from this time period that were indeed one hand operable with practice. But they were simply not mass produced, patented, or commercially successful as the dunhill lighters were. Back then it was incredibly common for people to creatively create lighters out of various discarded objects and there were plenty out there that could be used with the one hand. Edit: I just wanted to take a moment to point out how absolutely cool it is that there is a tinderbox flintlock sitting there on the table. Now THAT is an old lighter my friend.

Japan's Im Corona make lighter's that are just as good as the Dunhill. If you don't think so, then ask yourself why Dunhill had Im Corona make the Japanese Dunhill for them. The Japanese Dunhill has the exact operating mechanism as the Im corona pipe Magie. Im corona has continued their quality on the lighters they make today. Not so with Dunhill as they redesigned the new rollagas for cheaper manufacture.
