I'm a recovering alcoholic. I'm 25 and have been drinking since I was about 12. Whilst I don't drink rum, I realise that this could've just as easily been me. My father was an alcoholic, too. Soon enough I found out that he wouldn't notice if I took his some of his whiskey every other day or so. My mam was never in the picture seeing as my father wasn't exactly a desirable man to be married to. In recent years I joined the Royal Navy and have been trying to get my shit together ever since. This video was a huge wake up call for me the first time I saw it. I still come back to it every once in a while. Thank you.

I realized that I'm an alcoholic last year, but it's really difficult to break my drinking habits, even though I see how it's negatively affecting me as time progresses. How were you able to quit, and how did joining the Royal Navy help? I'm asking sincerely, because I really need to break this downward spiral I'm in.

That is fantastic. I hope you’re still doing well with your recovery. You should be proud of yourself for prioritising your health over friendships with people who do not have your best interests at heart, that’s a hard thing to do even if you’re not dealing with an addiction. Stay strong, and remember you’re not alone. I’m just a stranger but I’m proud of you and I hope you continue to build a healthier, happier future for yourself.

I don't like it when a parent does that to a child that's drinking. she didn't even think it would get worse and making it hard on him and his little sister that he have to take care of. some parents don't think those things when it comes to people drinking. even your friends can be real hush on you just because they find out you drink. even though you a type that doesn't drink all the time. not everyone in the world gets addicted with drinking and smoking. people need to stop judging people to much when it comes to that stuff. they are just going to make things worse on people that are having a hard life or just don't know the dangers on what they are taking in there bodies. and those people are all talk because on the fact they think taken pills well do them any good. they don't even know medicine addiction is also a thing.

You should read the meditations by the roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. It helped completely qwell all urges forever. I have never had a strong urges since then. It really helped me. Before that I had 3 alcohol overdose in my life and I am only 22. Sometimes we just need some very intelligent philosopher telling us we doing life wrong and explaining it with such unparalleled logical reasoning that you really start getting it through your thick skull. Trust me, that thing has saved my life.

You got this!!! This story might help you to stay motivated as well. I don't usually share it online, but this might be useful for you. My father had long had an alcohol problem. Five years ago, he took therapy and stopped drinking. After a few sober months, his motivation to live, hapiness, health, engagement as a father and as a person, towards both his work and our community, were higher than I ever hoped for. I actually 'discovered a completely different father'. I absolutely love the father I got to know when he was sober. When he was both physically and, more importantly, mentally recovered. He was a completely different person when sober. He didn't realise the extent to which this was true himself. After 6 months of being the fantastic father one could only dream of, he had a weak moment and started drinking again. He died 4 years later, at the age of 55. I was 20. If you have children, a partner, or anyone who loves you. Please think about how much difference you can make to their lifes, by staying strong. You can do this!!

I'd have died before finishing the 2nd liter. I have a low tolerance for alcohol. I've only been drunk once in my 57 years. I consumed one small spiked eggnog, one cocktail and one relatively small glass of wine with dinner at a Christmas gathering and I was falling down drunk plastered out of my mind. My grandfather could have drunk a bar full of heavy drinkers under the table. He lived to be 93. Everyone has a different tolerance. Mine as I said is very low. I am working on my third bottle of wine since last November

He went sober the day he was diagnosed, but it wasn't enough. He was a great man, an irreplaceable father and husband. I miss him everyday. Y'all can drink on occasion but please don't drink alcohol like you drink water. Especially the men out there. Please find someone to talk to if you have problems and don't rely on alcohol as your therapy.

Gotta thank you, Chubbyemu. Saw this video at the right time in my life. While I dont drink 3 litres of rum a day, I was drinking about 2-3 litres of rum per week for about the last 3 years. My liver enzymes were up about a year ago. And my poop was green for about the last year. Watched this video, and finally realized that this could easily be me by the time I turn 40. This video was the kick in the ass I needed to stop drinking. Now I havent had a drink for almost a month thanks to you. So yeah, i’m really glad you made this video as it helped snap me out of a vicious cycle. Thanks Chubbyemu! I owe you one, buddy! Oh, and my stool is back to normal too. Not sure about my liver enzymes yet though. Edit: I wanted to wait until I’d been sober for a while to give you guys an update. I saw this video the first time on August 15th, 2018. I posted this comment one month later on September 15th, 2018, after I’d been sober for a month. Today is March 15th, 2019. And I am very proud to report that I am 7 months sober as of today. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart, Chubbyemu! I was only able to break the cycle after watching this video, and learning what exactly was going on inside my body, as a result of all the liquor. And thank you to everyone that Liked and Replied to my comment. Your support and encouragement helped me more than you know. You guys are the best! 😁 And if you’re reading this, I hope you have an awesome day!

Dylan Morgan def an eyeopener. Realized that I went from just having fun with buddies to being drunk every night. Even when I was alone. Helped me realize that I have a real problem with alcohol. Kept saying, “Ill give it up tomm. Just one more night of getting drunk.” Three years of that passed before I watched this video, and “tomm,” slapped me in the face. Thank you for your support, my brother. It was really tough at first, and some days I still get the urge pretty bad. But I def made the right decision after watching this. Sorry for the long reply too. Lol.

Once your drinking that much that he would down several bottles of wine to be drunk on top of the rum. That handle just made him feel like us after a tall boy. The liver is so damaged it's not effectively producing acetahldehyde so he's not actually getting as drunk. His body can't even turn the alcohol into the chemical that makes you intoxicated. It's a cycle that happens to alcoholics. You drink which damages the liver and makes your brain more resistant to intoxication so you drink more which makes the liver less efficient at making you intoxicated so you drink more which makes the brain more resistant so you drink more which makes the liver less efficient so you drink more. This is an exponentially increasing tolerance

I knew Pigpen. I went to one of the earliest Grateful Dead concerts in San Francisco, at an event called the Trips Festival in January 1966, organized by Ken Kesey. Pigpen was the keyboard player, as you mentioned. At that time the Grateful Dead was essentially a bar band playing Top 40 music and they dressed head to toe in black leather. Their signature song was a cover of Wilson Picket's Midnight Hour which they would play at midnight for almost an hour - the beginning of their iconic extended jams. It was a great time to be a teenager (I was 19). I love your ability to explain medical the pathology of these medical conditions at the elemental level.

Hi Chubbyemu! I know you will most likely not see this & it'll get lost in these comments somewhere, but I appreciate you for telling JB's story because it reminded me of mine. I was never an alcoholic, but I was in a terrible car accident where they had to do life saving measures on me like they did with JB. My injuries in my accident were a Grade V liver laceration, hepatic artery injury, an injury to right portal vein & avulsion to gallbladder. In my accident, my gallbladder ripped off of my liver from blunt force trauma, and cause my arteries to rip apart as well. I was internally bleeding. My blood pressure dropped to 54/11... and they started massive transfusions. I went into hypovolemic shock as well and was in critical condition. My condition status was deteriorated at one point. They worked on me for hours, got control of the bleeding and did a angiographic embolization (coil embolization) and placed me into a medically induced coma for 2 1/2 weeks. my kidneys started to fail and I had to do dialysis and then my lung collapsed which forced me to be on a ventilator longer than I should've. idk but thank you so much for sharing his story it made me feel inspired to share mine publicly. I resonated with his, and you spoke facts on what the medical field does in emergencies, and because of their quickness, it saved my life!

the fact his father introduced substances at such an early age is horrific. admittedly there was a time when i’d see people with substance addictions and just wonder why they didn’t seek help or try to stop because obviously it’s bad for them. then i ended up developing my own dependency on adderall, and it very much changed my stance on addiction. substance abuse is a serious illness that needs medical attention, not judgement or jail time or whatever. I have some dependancy on adderall and that alone feels impossible, I cannot imagine what it’d be like to have a reliance on an arguably more addictive substance be established since 13. people addicted to substances don’t usually take them because they want to, it’s because they feel they have to, it’s a dangerous coping mechanism that has so much poor stigma. I know taking more adderall than prescribed is bad for me, and it worries me, but I also don’t think I could face my current life situation without it, and thats the case for a lot of addiction issues.

The first step tends to be the hardest. Admitting to yourself that there is a problem, and seeking treatment. Whatever it may be, stick to it, and find someone you can talk to when you have an urge to drink. AA worked for me, as you almost always need a support structure to keep you sober. It's not for everyone, but there are all kinds of help. I'm glad this man lived. It's scary how quickly you can end up drinking what should be deadly amounts. Your brain just becomes accustomed to it, and then expects it. At the amount mentioned here, even quitting cold turkey, can cause withdraw symptoms (that in themselves can be deadly.) Medical detox is usually needed for something this severe.
