I was raised by my grandma in the countryside. We drank water from a local spring, and raised animals. It was great until the end of middle-school, when I started feeling ill with all kinds of symptoms that were so weird, the local doctors thought I was crazy or faking. My grandma had an inkling about what it could have been: worms. So she gave me a traditional daily disgusting concoction of milk and garlic: sweet milk to draw the worms, garlic to kill them, she said. It worked so well, that a few month later I was feeling so sick, I couldn't even sleep at night. So they took me ''to the city''. The hospital did daily lab tests for a week, until they discovered that I had a giardia infection, the most common parasite round here. The doctor said that it was so bad, she hadn't seen anything like it in her whole career. She gave me a perplexed look and wondered out loud how I was even able to stand up. I was a medical mystery, so I felt almost proud. She explained that all I had to do to stay safe was to wash my hands, properly clean my food and cook it, and drink water from a clean, tested source. My family thought that washing my hands before eating meant I was just being extra, and having fresh soap in the house was too much trouble. It made me realize how poorly I was being raised and had to learn what the standards of personal grooming and sanitation were in the ''civilised'' world. I became a real germaphobe after that experience. It took me years to learn how not to freak out every time I ate or drank something. To this day, I don't eat other people's food. I guess I still have trust issues. And some folk eat raw fish? Hell, no! On another note, I read somewhere that the populations that are accustomed to eating raw seafood have genetic adaptations that make them more resilient in fighting these kinds of infections. I always wandered how some people manage to fight off these parasites. If that piece of information is accurate, It would be nice to see a Chubbyemu video about it.

I work at a grocery store that has a sushi chef from Japan, we have sushi on a shelf made by him and his assistant. I've talked to him and he's a good guy that knows what he's doing. His father was a sushi chef, he was trained growing up and professionally in culinary school, and he takes it very seriously. He knows what could happen if he doesn't prepare it correctly. He doesn't want someone getting sick because of him, it would be dishonorable not just to him, but his father and culinary teachers as well. So yeah, I trust the sushi he makes.

Farmed salmon is often considered by many to be one of the least favorable food options in terms of health. Its negative reputation stems from several factors associated with its farming practices. In light of this, it would be highly beneficial to witness sushi restaurants refraining from utilizing this non-traditional ingredient. Traditionally, sushi has been crafted with a variety of fish that are caught in the wild, such as tuna, mackerel, and yellowtail. However, the introduction of farmed salmon into the sushi industry can be attributed to the Norwegian salmon industry's efforts to expand their market. They actively promoted the inclusion of salmon in Japanese sushi restaurants, thereby altering the traditional sushi landscape. The primary concern with farmed salmon lies in the farming techniques employed. These salmon farms often rely heavily on the use of chemicals, antibiotics, and artificial feed to maintain their fish population. The overuse of such substances can lead to various issues, including the accumulation of toxins within the fish, negative impacts on the environment, and potential health risks for consumers. Furthermore, the environmental implications associated with salmon farming cannot be overlooked. These farms often require large amounts of open water areas to function, leading to concerns such as pollution, habitat destruction, and the spread of diseases to wild fish populations. These factors contribute to the classification of salmon farming as an environmental hazard. Considering the potential negative health effects and environmental hazards associated with farmed salmon, it is advisable for individuals to exercise caution when consuming sushi or other fish dishes. Opting for alternative fish choices, particularly those caught in the wild, can be a more sustainable and healthier option.

Good point, it's all up to who is preparing the food, not where they are preparing it. Being in a 'normal' restaurant doesn't magically mean the chef knows what they're doing, and being in a convenience/grocery store doesn't automatically mean they don't. Just read local health inspection reports if you want proof of that.

I eat a lot of prepackaged sushi like this, though it's sold in a local grocery store - they're pretty quality in the way they handle things, but there's always this risk. If you're afraid of anything to do with that parasite but don't want to give up prepackaged sushi, aim for the more "American" ones like California rolls. Those are typically made with imitation crab, which is cod (and other whitefish) that's been cooked well and flavored to resemble shellfish such as crab. Usually, there are vegan/vegetarian sushi options as well! Things like cucumber rolls and what my grocery store lovingly describes as "snack rolls" (tiny, veggie sushi that's as thick as your thumb, it's got about 40 in each package). Avacado-based sushis are becoming popular as well and are, frankly, delicious. Of course... the best option is to find a reputable sushi restaurant to visit when you're craving it. The quality and taste is almost always better from a restaurant, anyway!

He also said that in japan, restaurant sushi on the other hand is somewhat strict with their quality and control because if people got sick from the food that they serve it would ruin the restaurants reputation but he said not all is perfect because on extremely rare cases one or two slips past the Q&C I hope this wouldn't scare people from eating sushi as I have always brought them from the store and ate it along with some fine tequila. yup, still suspicious microwaving suspect food does kill bacteria (you'd have to nuke it really well to make sure) i don't know about spores but microwaving doesn't do much to cut down on all the toxins the bacteria produced while it was growing for who knows how long beforehand so while you might not get any nasty bugs growing inside you and producing toxins after microwaving, you'll get a hefty dose of whatever they already produced in the food before you nuked them

I work at a gas station and I can confirm, that if the attendants are doing their jobs, there should be little to worry about. Double check the date on items you aren't sure about, and if the food service area looks poorly cared for or dirty, avoid it. It's definitely a judgment call, but common sense will almost always guide you in the right direction, as with anything else.

I remember watching something a bit similar to this on TV. There was this couple who absolutely loved cooking homemade stuff, especially sushi (I live in Japan). One day, the two decided they decided they wanted sushi and the husband decided to make sushi using some bonito and what he thought was raw blended tuna (also known as negitoro), and made sushi using that. Of course the couple didn’t really suspect anything when they ate the sushi and ate it all up, but after a few hours they began suffering from stomach pain and eventually went to two separate bathrooms to vomit. Turns out, the negitoro the husband used was actually pork; as mentioned earlier it was blended and since the colors were similar he couldn’t tell. So they ultimately suffered from salmonella as a result. Normally that would be pretty serious except their symptoms didn’t worsen somehow and they ended up being fine without having to go to the hospital. It baffles me, to be honest.

Sushi chef here. I'd like to add that the salmon parasite has nothing to do with dumpster diving or how old the sushi was. The salmon was not prepared correctly. In other words, TB could have bought the same sushi the day it was made and he would have still gotten sick. This is rather terrifying since there's no telling how many other people got sick from buying and eating sushi from this gas station. This is super common knowledge for sushi chefs and Japanese people in general, but apparently it was not for whoever made the sushi at the gas station. So ironically, TB's eye for expired food was actually not wrong. Although I obviously still wouldn't recommend dumpster diving or eating expired food, that's not the moral of THIS story. The moral of this story is to not eat gas station sushi in America.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Ironically he didn't get sick from dumpster diving. The food wasn't bad expired. He got sick because they forgot to freeze the meat. You always gotta do stuff to meat like either wash it, or smoke it, salt cure it, freeze it or even just cook it (depends on what meat it was). Lots of meats have parasites not just fish. This hasn't scared me from eating sushi. I eat it maybe once every other month. But it did make me more cautious about where I buy it from.
