0:00 A Man Ate 120 Gummy Probiotics 🦠 For Lunch
0:29 29 seconds in and we're already 😏 here
1:52 haha gummy probiotic 😋 go nom nom
2:50 stomach 😞 hurt (but is it the stomach?)
3:25 What's happening 😳 in 😳 his 😳 abdomen?
4:51 There's a country of more than 1 billion people where dentistry is not separate from medicine. As insurance spirals out of control here, separating them makes us even less healthy.
5:39 Another important clue
7:04 Despite any memes, we've told you many details of this case to give you an idea of what's happening
8:10 What 😳 is 😳 that??
10:38 Sorry Bacteria 🦠 u can't 😩 be 😖 here
11:24 So what 😲 exactly 😲 happened?
11:58 I'm definitely not wearing a different suit than earlier in the video
12:18 These are scarier than BC's case, but very rare and not likely to happen to you
13:05 Greek Yogurt good
13:19 The answer to this question might be yes. But ask your dentist for your particular case.
14:08 Take only as directed. Do not exceed suggested dosage. That's the takeaway from this video. Take care of yourself 🙏 and be well.
These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen. They are de-identified and many instances have been presented in more depth in an academic setting. These videos are not individual medical advice and are for general educational purposes only. We do not give medical advice over the internet.

When they were making the 'House MD' series, the writers were initially worried that they would run out of bizarre medical cases that they could make episodes out of. Then then did a little research and discovered that they would NEVER run out of bizarre medical cases. The human body is amazingly complex and we are still discovering new and unusual ways in which things can go sideways every day. Kinda makes you happy just to get by!

Your buddy was a 30-year-old man presenting to the emergency room with slurred speech, paralysis with weak muscles, double vision and/or sudden visual loss, fatigue, lightheadedness, and/or vertigo. He was unable to communicate with staff that these signs and symptoms followed the onset of an inner ear infection. With the correct diagnosis and proper treatment, your buddy made a full recovery.

Nah, having serious bowel issues can cause even the sanest person to do crazy things trying to fix them. Studies of IBS patients have found that people say they'd happily give up _sex_ to be able to eat whatever they wanted to again. It's truly that bad.

@@sandboy5880 Right, because some internet troll that feels the need to punch down at people has the self-discipline necessary to be hyper-vigilant about what they eat, lest some tiny amount of an ingredient in it cause a flare-up that makes you want to die or, in some cases like with Chron's, literally puts them in the ER. I have to do that every day, I can only eat a couple of different meals on a regular basis and my options for occasional treat meals are quite limited. I've been doing that for _years,_ as has everyone that suffers from things like IBS, IBD (they're different) and Crohn's Disease. Tiny amount of corn will make me badly nauseous and miserable for _hours._ Once got hit with that because the two catfish fingers I'd eaten turned out to use cornbread in the breading. Even trace amounts of gluten can make people with Crohn's disease wish they were dead for a day or more. All of us have to have iron self-control and discipline or we'd kill ourselves over all the flare-ups. Constant bowel issues destroy all quality of life for those who suffer from them. I doubt you'd last even a week with any of those bowel issues.

  • @Sniperboy5551

    @Sniperboy5551

    Ай бұрын

@sandboy5880 I agree with both of you. If the issues are serious enough, you’ll do whatever you can to alleviate those symptoms. Poor self-control in this case, I absolutely agree, but I don’t think many of us truly understand his mental state at the time. Pain makes people do irrational things.

Registered Dental Assistant here and it absolutely terrifies and angers me that the United States keeps medical and dental care separate. Not only does it make it totally unaffordable, but also limits access to dental education. Most of my patients are over the age of 60 and 80% (not an actually stat but an educated guess) tell me that they were never taught the importance of taking care of your teeth and how it effects your overall health. Our office is small (just 1 doctor, 1 hygienist, 1 office manager and 1 assistant) so we don’t see a lot of patients but I’ve seen enough to know that if medical and dental would be together I would have healthier and happier patients. We do a lot a work that we know we are never going to see a dime for simply because they are suffering and no one will help them

I'm assuming the gut infection causing a major case of the runs was C-Diff, yeah? My father had gotten C-Diff after receiving vancomycin for a bad staph infection in his right big toe. His infectious disease doctor actually recommended he take a probiotic supplement (by following the normal dosage, of course) to combat C-Diff's tendency to grow back after a full course of antibiotics. Not only did his C-Diff never come back after a full course of Dificid, but he felt even better than before. I think the moral of the story here is that everything is best when consumed in moderation. Anything in extreme excess can be deadly. My dad also had a broken heart valve, started out really inconspicuous with him being a bit short of breath. GP thought it was pneumonia at first so they prescribed him something to manage the shortness of breath. But then one day he nearly had a heart attack or infarct (i can't remember) in his sleep and he drove himself to the hospital, which was about 30 minutes away. Once there they quickly realised he had almost died and rushed him to a bigger hospital ,with one of the best cardiology departments in the country, by ambulance. Took them a few days to figure out what exactly was going on but eventually they replaced his heart valve with the valve of a pig's heart, which I think is kinda neat lol. Anyway, he recovered in full and his heart has been so healthy as of late that they are scaling back some if his cardiology appointments.

It's not really random but I get your drift. Most of these are simple overdoses. The overdose causes a chemical change that throws the body's homeostasis way off. The pesticide is just pure poison. There's no safe dose of that. The sushi was not shelf stable, which also sabotages homeostasis. And of course people wait until they can no longer speak or see to get care, so that adds 3d10 damage.

I had a n aortic valve replacement (to fix a genetic defect) and got infective endocarditis on the artificial valve 3 months later. The new valve was basically about to fall off which would be very fatal. They did an immediate re-operation to replace the valve again. I had to go on 6 weeks of aggressive IV antibiotics to make sure the infection wouldn’t come back. The cause of the infection was never identified. It was 10 years ago on March 15.

@gachatana9656 No, that's a big false equivalency. One can be spread from airborne droplets or contacting a contaminated surface and then contact with mucosal membranes, from any number of people or surfaces, delivering a viral load of varying ranges altering the period of incubation and subsequent symptoms. It is hard to pinpoint the origin, while this case came from direct contact during the specific few hours someone's chest is opened during surgery and the heart being directly contacted. It was either the O.R. team that violated safety protocols, or the sterilization team that was responsible for sterilizing those specific instruments. Either way, it is why they hammer this into healthcare workers' heads during college and what feels like every month with mandatory safety meetings, online training, and review boards. It is also a big reason malpractice insurance exists as well as CGIP and OSHA inspections. Educate yourself and stop spewing ignorant fallacies trying to gaslight people who actually know the job.

It is frankly criminal to me how little regard is given to dental care in the US. Everything from it being separate insurance to the lack of record sharing and lack of effort on both sides of someone's providers to bridge the gap...your teeth can literally kill you. I feel so strongly about this because of the way it nearly destroyed my family. My mom had a knee replacement, and while it was current practice at the time to give preventative antibiotics after a such a replacement and before dental work for 2 years thereafter, following that 2 years they stopped. She then got her very next dental work done without them, and she nearly died. She'd developed a massive infection on that artificial knee from that dental work, and it festered so long she went septic and developed necrotizing fasciitis. She lost 80% of her thigh, had to have her calf sliced open from ankle to knee to help it drain, and spent a month in ICU, then 6 months in a level 1 trauma center's burn unit, and much more time after that in assisted care. She lives with me now, can miraculously still walk despite all the damage - frankly she's lucky she didn't lose the leg, let alone her life. But she's forever in pain from all the damage and the changes made to her walking gait that cause her to put her weight down on that leg improperly. I'm terrified she's going to fall one of these days when I'm not around to help her. She's actually an anonymous case study on the report that made it standard practice for dentists to give those preventative antibiotics for much longer after artificial replacements. However, nothing can heal her mental health or chronic pain or the fact she's going to remain partially crippled the rest of her life, not to mention her ongoing fear of dentists for understandable reasons, but I can't get her to seek treatment she needs for some dying teeth. It's just so frustrating. As to the probiotics side of this, I'm a big believer in them, but I refuse to take any medical gummies period simply because of their treat-like qualities. At minimum I feel like people need to take them VERY seriously - keep them locked away from children, take them only as directed, understand that probiotics are not a replacement to but rather a supplement with antibiotics, and even then should probably wait if one is currently suffering from any kind of internal open wound like dental work or any other infection in the gut. Bacteria is still bacteria and even with the good ones, there is always a possibility of too much of a good thing. And for the love of all that is holy, brush your dang teeth.

Yooo similar experience, but it was the local regional hospital. There are too many doctors and nurses who let personal prejudices and/or unprofessional behaviour, incompetency, ego, etc. affect the quality of care they give their patients. story: Felt sharp pain for months in my abdomen but only when I slept, until I collapsed to my knees and had to hold back my screams [I would've screamed the loudest in my life, but was volunteering at a daycare and childhood trauma is not a nice gift] twice 6 days apart. Went to the emergency room twice. Saw two different doctors, first young and second old. First said, and I quote, "There is absolutely no possibility for you to be suffering anything more than a muscle strain/pulled muscle. Take tylenol, take this topical numbing cream, and you'll be fine in two to three weeks." and his reasons were age [14, "You are too young for any serious health issue, in fact I won't even bother for x-rays or tests because we both know they'll come back clean], gender [not his at the time], and physical fitness [I appeared fatter than I was] . . . he should've been held accountable but we didn't get his name. The second doctor took one look at me, left, came back asking my mother to take a picture of me to compare to a photo from a month or two prior. We could see what was wrong instantly. I was literally bright yellow compared to my typical olive tan so nobody could tell that over the last month or less I had been getting progressively sicker bc everyday was more yellow than the last. An ultrasound fifteen minutes later confirmed it for us; I was on the verge of liver failure. My gallbladder and gallduct were so obstructed that nothing could leave my liver and it was essentially eating itself away. I was immediately taken for thorough ultrasound scans, xrays, and then over the next two days I underwent two emergency operations, one of which had to be done out-of-town. Sure a week is a week...but according to the second doctor, he guesstimated I'd have hit liver failure within the next 2 weeks at most. And then a nurse pushing my gurney to the operating room fatshamed me on the way and made assumptions about my dietary habits regarding McDonald's in front of my mum (she blamed my situation on eating fast food every day, a burger or two at least, but shut up when my mother told her off---read: shouted at her--and I made sure to smugly inform her I preferred fruits and veggies over meat, dairy, bread, etc. and my McD's order at the time was a ceasar salad, grilled chicken on the side [I never ate it], and used only half the dressing; with orange or apple juice depending on my mood).

No blood clots whatsoever luckily. i.v clindamycin and flucloxacillin for multiple weeks and a 3 month hospital stay later i was released and am completely fine now. Even like 50 years ago this wouldve been a completely life-altering thing and i would've needed a pacemaker, meds, and a mechanical valve for the rest of my life. I'm also very lucky it wasnt MRSA. Initiated CPR to no avail, while on the phone with 911. Brief interruption to open the door for law enforcement, who ran and retrieved his AED to no avail. EMT's arrived, took over compressions to no avail when the paramedics arrived and plugged in the monitor. No pattern, not even pulseless electrical activity and I recommended discontinuing CPR (old military medic here, I know those monitors and treatments intimately). They continued for another 20 minutes, then called the hospital for the code to be called. Four hours earlier, she'd helped me carry in $400 in groceries. Couldn't eat for a week, as every time I saw that food, I saw her carrying it inside for me. Two weeks of nightmares of her ribs fracturing under my compressions.

He had said at the time that most bacteria you get in a probiotic yogurt that reaches your stomach likely wont survive the stomach acid to the point they can replicate later, but a longer lasting capsule has a better chance of surviving the roughly 6-8 hours it will take to get to the large intestine. But ye, he definitely wasnt a fan of probiotic yogurts etc, said basically most healthy people will get nothing more than bacteria in their mouth from them, where it wont do any good lol.

The thing with fermented foods is that they have to be a regular part of your diet for a large enough population to be established in your guts (since few make it at any given time). You also have to eat fibrous foods that will feed these bacteria. Most people would benefit immensely from both, but if for whatever reason someone isn't able to make that change, then yeah, a probiotic supplement will do more for you than eating yogurt for a few days.

The statement at the end about how eating yogurt and having other risk factors may correspond to endocarditis is really interesting, since for much of human history, we've eaten fermented foods that contain lactic acid bacteria, like yogurt or sauerkraut. This wasn't just because it tasted good, but also because it allowed longer term storage of perishable foods like vegetables and milk, since that bacteria would out-compete spoiling bacteria that would make it unsafe. Modern consumption of fermented foods has now become more of a dietary choice or trend rather than a survival necessity, so I'd really like to see what the incidences of that type of endocarditis is in cultures that still rely heavily on fermented foods for survival.

This is, as you say, an extreme example, but it really speaks to an issue I have of people calling things in the microbiome "good bacteria" versus "bad bacteria". It suggests, to some people, that there's no risks involved, because they're helpful, beneficial bacteria, not harmful ones.

A good example is staphylococcus epidermidis. Very common as part of the skin flora. And even staphylococcus aureus, which isn't rare (about 21-30%) on the skin and upper respiratory tract, but can also cause issues starting with things like pimples, but can be as bed pneumonia, meningitis and even to sepsis.

There is a similar thing with medications like Methylphenidate (Adderall). Because it benefits people like me with ADHD, Neurotypical people looking for a way focus on studies assume it will give them a boost in concentration. In reality, there is little to no scientific evidence that it has any significant effect on people who don't need it, but is associated with increased satisfaction and a more positive perception of one's own preformance. That's cause this medication is basically diet Methamphetamine. And yes, it can get you high. And as a tangent, I wouldn't take this if I didn't need to. You can't consume that much caffine, alcohol is COMPLETELY off the table. I sweat a bunch and get dehydrated easily, and you can forget to eat and drink cause it supresses your hunger. The phrase "The only difference between medicine and poison is the dose" really needs to be stressed more when it comes to this sort of stuff.

I had breast cancer, and I was learning about how normal food acts in the body against cancer. I was also following a very successful course of treatment outlined by my oncologist and surgeon. When I told some friends about it, one friend said ginger is good for nausea. Most times I know that's true for me. But not while having cancer. My stomach really hurt. I was also surprised I didn't gravitate toward citrus fruits for vitamin C. But I knew fresh produce has vitamin C, so no problem. Especially since I always started in the produce aisle in my grocery. One of my friends suggested probiotics. I told her I've got enough going on inside. I don't want to add on any bacteria that might cause something worse. Now that you put out this video, I'm glad I didn't.

  • @SBRS47

    @SBRS47

Good call. Probiotics are not innocuous. They aren't FDA regulated so you can't guarantee what you're ingesting in terms of the amount and type of bacteria. Also, your gut is full of several thousands of different types of bacteria that have a different balance for each person. Why would a probiotic with 5 to 10 types bacteria solve a dysbiosis? Additionally, some probiotic strains have been engineered to be antibiotic resistant so when people take them with antibiotics they aren't killed. How do you treat a resistant probiotic infection? Probiotics are a waste of money. You're better off just trying to get back to your normal diet so your flora can restore itself.

My mom had Aspergillus growing in her ear and it took many doctors to diagnose it. Most sent her away thinking "common ear infection" even though she told them there was black clumps of mold coming out of her ear. I actually diagnosed it first with help from a nurse friend by looking at those clumps under a microscope. I also know someone who was a plumber lost a lung to Aspergillus, black mold isn't something to take lightly.
