Is Dust Mostly Dead Skin?

People claim that 70-80% of household dust is dead skin, but is it true?
Thanks to Google for sponsoring this video! Learn more about Search here: www.google.com/search/howsear...
Special thanks to J.M.E.H van Bronswijk, author of 'House Dust Biology'. We exchanged emails to make sure I got my facts straight for this video. Below is an excerpt from her email to me, responding to my claims that start with a dash:
- Around half of airborne dust particles under 100um are skin scales
This is true for climates, regions and seasons where people live mostly indoors.
The 1 to 2 g of skin scales shed each 24 hours will end up in places where people are present (and rub their skin or have textile moving over the skin).
You can also look at it from a different angle: What else has the same size and could contribute? That will usually be pollen from outdoor sources, also depending on season, region and climate, as well as the ventilation regime of the building.
However, taken as the median value over a whole year, I consider your statement correct for regions with a temperate climate.
- 53% of dust particles vacuumed from a mattress were found to be skin scales
It depends a little on the type of mattress. For polyether mattresses the amount may even be larger.
For mattresses made of natural material it could be less since the mattress-material will also give off small particles.
- larger particles consist mostly of fibers, eg. cotton, paper, wool, synthetics
That's true .. including bread crumbs ..... 🙂
- skin scales seem to form a larger fraction of dust where we spend more time, e.g. in or near bed.
..... and on the couch used to view television or be active in gaming.
It has to do with the constant production of skin scales over the 24 hours.
- skin scales form a smaller fraction of dust if there are significant other sources, e.g. carpeting, dirt from outside etc.
Yes, everyting you walk on with your shoes or that recieves dirt from the outside with other means, will have a lessr percentage of human skin scales.
However, do not forget the skin scales of pets that will also be an active allergen for many people, and a food source for house dust mites.

I was at a primary school and had to climb up on a ladder to clean out the dust filters in the projector mounted high on the ceiling of the school hall. Predictably, there was a thick layer of dust, probably building up over three or four years since whenever the last time the projector needed servicing. The dust was a pale shade of pink to match the bright red school jumpers and cardigans that the school used for its uniform.

It's more like Google is a good jumping off point. Lots of people use it just like he said; typing in the answer they want as the query, taking the results from it and going no further. But can we draw different conclusions regarding mass vs. size? Dead skin cells are most likely denser, so they dont contribute to the size of the dust in your vacuum, probably not even colour or look of it, but they should contribute to the weight of your vacuum.

Better question: "What needs to change to make Dust 2 balanced?". I mean the map is already a 4-square design, that comes close too being symmetrical in terms of distance to A and B from the spawn sites (but it's not exactly equal, because the CTs need to get to the sites a little faster).

Dead skin cells only accounts for a tiny bit of that weight gain.

Ok, here's a question I've always wondered, and maybe you can tackle it in a future episode: If the geological model of the Earth is correct, and you can look through the past as layers of rock and earth... where does all the material that makes up these layers of rock and earth actually come from? How does the past actually get buried over time? Is it from layers of dust? An accumulation of particles from micrometeorites? Or from some other source? And is the Earth actually getting larger over time, as it accumulates successive layers of "time"?

  • @angaj

    @angaj

    2 жыл бұрын

What you're missing out is that everything comes from under and goes back within. Basically everything we are made of has already been a part of earth for ages, and when we perish it goes back in to be reused over time, howsoever long. There is no 'new' matter that is coming that would stack up on earth. (except probably some space stuff)

New layers of sediment are mostly formed in the ocean. Sand and clay are transported there by rivers, millions tons per year, for millions of years. The highs (hills and mountains) are eroded and the material fills up the lows (oceans). After some very long time, sediment transforms into solid rock, and then eventually some huge tectonic plate movement shifts the entire Earth's crust and brings the young rocks to the surface. The process never stops: these rocks are brought down to sand and dust which go to the ocean and form new rocks

To be more clear, crust is eventually subducted back into the mantle, melted down and, over millions and millions of years, erupted back onto the surface. This process does slow down over time as radioactive isotopes decay (thus contributing less heat) and the core of the planet cools, but there are no significant sources of extra material to add to the planet. Biological material is subject to these same processes (fossilization and the like) but more often is broken down and recycled by the biological processes of other organisms, which are limited in growth by the food resources and environmental conditions available to them. New matter cannot be created and there's simply not enough stuff falling from space to appreciably add mass to the planet.

The ONLY reason Veritasium isn't being / hasn't been censored is because he toes their line -- as soon as he doesn't, Veritasium will be censored too. That's why they have to resort to this kind of advertising - they're essentially saying, "Hey, use us, cuz we're big, don't mind our censorship of everyone who doesn't agree with our agenda." Veritasium somehow hasn't noticed this?
