In this magnificent meander through Maida Vale Joolz takes you to many lovely pubs and looks at some interesting places. Learn all about why it is called Maida Vale. The battle of Maida and the hero of Maida. There's a lovely trip on the canal in Little Venice, lots of street furniture and oddities including stink pipes and cabman shelters. London's largest brothel at one time and Norman Wisdom's freedom of the capital of Albania.
There's John Wayne's visit to London, London's tallest phone box and more stuff about The Sweeney. Maida Vale is a very pretty part of London and has lots of beautiful hidden pockets.

The details explained on the old architectural building that was a brothel by the man on the street was fascinating. Living in the states and a British mother .. I love your channel. Before I left home in the early 70’s and returned to the states I had an opportunity to visit London and it provided me with happy memories. I always learn so much from you.. thank you for always making me smile.

The Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale was quite a mission to rebuild, with the architects having to sift through the rubble of the wreckage and piece it together like a jigsaw puzzle. Spiffing job!

The same thing happened to a pub in Melbourne - the Corkman Irish pub, previously known as (wait for it) the Carlton. The developers were fined and went to jail! 👊 Now it's being rebuilt, though not to the original design. ☹

The “snob screens” at the Prince Alfred, are actually because that small section was for women. And it let them close themselves off from the rest of the pub. In fact, the Prince Alfred is arguably the best preserved pub in the United kingdom that still has sections that separated the classes. Those “snob screens” are the one of only 8 left in the united Kingdom.

Always love your videos Joolz. Always full of little gems of social history. May I take a little moment to remember the tragic night of December 13th 1974, and the fire in the Worsley Hotel at 3/17 Clifton Gardens, a fire set by an arsonist that claimed the lives of six residents and that of Fireman Hamish ( Harry) Pettit, who lost his life when the roof collapsed, trapping himself and three other Firemen. You’ll never be forgotten Harry. RIP.

God I love running into people like that in London. Me and a friend were killing time in St Bart's, and a guy came up to us and started talking about his father and grandfather being expert woodworkers who restored old manor houses etc, fixing up window frames and door frames etc. At first I thought he was just daft and rambling, but after a few minutes I realized that he was literally giving us a completely true story about some little town up on the East coast. There was an airfield there in the war and sure enough I looked it up later and it was all 100% true. One of the best experiences I've ever had visiting London.

We asked at the shelter if we could get some grub and the lady said we could come in and eat our food there. I didn't realise at the time that only cab drivers were allowed to use them. We visited again a few weeks later and had a rather smashing fry up in there too. I feel rather privileged now to have sat in one and eaten some food👍🏻

Here in the U.S. they've taken away all the public phone boxes, they're impossible to find. But I'm old and remember using them all the time, too. In the cutest part of my little city, you can find a genuine red phone box from the UK, and a genuine red double decker bus (which is being used as a little fish and chip shop). People like to take pictures with them. They're both quite old, but I'm not sure the exact years.

I lived about 200 yards from 'The Rec' from the time I was 2 years old until I was 18 and played there countless times. Back then there was a really good playground and a paddling pool which had a stone boat beside it. Also, where you were standing on the field looking at the Pavilion, there used to be a large and very popular cycling track. And as another coincidence, my wife lived in the house next door to Norman Wisdom when she was a child with her family. Browns Chemist was there back in the late 1950s and was the venue used in the Madness video, 'House of Fun'.

This was my first neighbourhood when I moved to London in the summer of 2008, lived round the corner from the Chppenham, so sad to hear it's gone now. Used to have unbelivable Sunday roasts and during the summer, it was one of the few places in the area you could sit outide well into the night and have a drink. 25:54 - that street has a lot of famous residents both sides of the canal - Noel Gallagher, Lulu, Adam Clayton, Paul Weller, Frankie Miller....

With all those brothels the place could have been Laida Vale. I do agree about the hideous white pointing. Across the road, the properties benefit from the original 'tuck' pointing which is a lost art apart from on the restoration of heritage buildings. Glad to see the would-be developers of the Carlton Tavern got a financial bloody nose when they were forced to rebuild it to as it was. I must add it to by pub wish list.

Maida Vale underground railway station is a marvel, Joolz. The original style of architecture and those lovely roundels in mosaic are fantastic. There's loads of history in this area and all the original phone and postal boxes aplenty are really special. I can't say that there's any dilapidation in buildings here, whatsoever, and there has most certainly been an abundance of celebrities that lived here over the years. It must be good, because David Bowie had a spell in the district. An entirely interesting video, Joolz, and so many thanks. Take care.

Great stuff. The north side of Paddington Rec / Carlton Vaie is really South. Kilburn. Point of fact the Carlton Tavern demolition was attempted by by a private developer NOT a housing association. Well done nevertheless🎉 from the Kilburn Stroller

I used to enjoy walking along the canal to the Prince Alfred from Notting Hill when I fancied a little change of scenery. If any place personifies luxury flats I always felt it was Maida Vale. Love the Brannigan mention Jules. They certainly don't make movies like that anymore!! It's straight out of a Simpsons joke.

Bing Crosby died playing golf. This led to a bad taste joke that I remember as a school child. Won’t tell it but Hitler / Crosby / bunker . Great video

Paddington Rec is in South Kilburn next to the north entrance at the restored Carlton Tavern in Calton Vale. The plaques in the Rec are for Dr Bannister and Sir Bradley Wiggins. The Carlton Tavern was demolished by a private developer. Fernhead Road is South Kilburn. You may have been taking to too many estate agents?

I love the music you play. Even tho I love lots of more modern music I grew up in the 60's in Australia but back then a lot of our movies and music were English, and mum's family were from East End London, she was born here tho, and so I heard that music and it does bring back childhood, so I think the music adds so much to your videos and I just love them. I have visited London in 2008 and went to East End London to find ancestors, but know so much more now, I need to come back and also go to the places you film. Just beautiful. Thanks.

Does Anne Lennox still live in Maida Vale? My uncle Chris who was a well known Antique Dealer in London, and I, the tag-a-long, helped her find an antique wrought iron bed frame on one very hot summer day. The story is kind of funny. It was early 1980's, I was 12 and living in London with my uncle Chris. On one occasion when my uncle had work, we climbed into the white Moris Minor car he had inherited, it was THE same car from the Miss Marple TV series, and we drove to Maida Vale in it to pick up Annie Lennox. I had no clue who she was at that time. When we arrived at the place, an odd looking lady came out wearing a motorcycle helmet with the visor down and got inside the car. I didn't know she was famous and didn't care when she removed the helmet inside the car. We spent the entire day shopping with her for a wrought iron bed frame while she wore the helmet with the visor down the entire time we were in public. It wasn't until years later when I was a teenage girl who watched alot of MTV that I learned who Anne Lennox was. ☺My reaction after I found out who she was still makes my family laugh. I've been a loyal fan ever since!☺

We went to a very spectacular wedding at Lauderdale Road Synagogue, Just the 350 guests, followed by reception, dinner and dance in the Ballroom at the Grosvenor House Hotel. Someone obviously had a more than a few quid.
