Not really. They were really in a relationship. In the scene where they broke up he was asking her why she was tripping about him and the woman he used to date named Lisa and he told her we’re together now. Then when she said he hasn’t given her any reason to trust him then he broke up with her but they were fully in a relationship not a situationship.
@Pretty30715

@@beautifulsurprise9424Naw they were just kicking it and having sex the first time. When Nina came back they did get in a serious relationship. He told her " this is a destiny type thing" . At first Darius said they were just kicking it she wasn't his girl.
@beautifulsurprise9424
26 күн бұрын
@@Pretty30715 no, they were official when she moved in with him. When they broke up she had to get her stuff and give his key back. You don’t live with someone you’re just kicking it with. They started off as just kicking it yes. But after they got into it when she came to that party with Wood and they weren’t talking for a while then she called him and invited him out dancing, they then became official. Which is why he got so mad at her for not trusting him. He was like how are we going to be together if you don’t trust me?? If they were just kicking it, then her not trusting him would not even be an issue because they weren’t together. They most certainly made their relationship official and she either lived with him or spent most of her time there because when they officially broke up after Darius got so pissed off about her not being able to trust him then they broke up and she had to get all her stuff out of his house and give her key back. They were definitely official and in a relationship but it started after they went dancing at the stepper set.
What I didn't like was that neither of the two main characters seemed to be over their exes. How can you expect a relationship to work if you always have someone else in the back of your mind? I will say I liked the side characters storylines. All of Darius's friend and their little pow wows were very entertaining.
@Daf029

To be fair Nina did say it was bad timing, but Darius low-key stalked her until she finally gave in lol
My thing was, she ran off to go be back with her ex and was mad at Darius for getting with someone then gets with his boy. SMH we can't just be mad at him. But I still loved this movie
Great review! Just a point of contention: Nina wasn't initially a smoker. From the montages we learn that she picks it up from Darius. I think this is a representation of how connected they were to each other. Ok, carry on.

Love Jones is a staple in the Black community, and it’s funny (but not surprising) this film didn’t achieve that much success in the box office. I feel like this film is also influential because over the years I have seen films that tried to copy the romance of two artists that go through trial and tribulations. We need to discuss how Darius was low key stalking Nina in the first few minutes of the film 🚩🚩🚩

@@high_off_glowsticks She tells him to call her and that she knows the has the number when he's leaving her apartment after showing up unexpectedly after she had already turned him down before. It's called persitence. She was feeling it too. Just like flirting is sexual harassment when the woman doesn't like you, but all good if she does, that's stalking if she wasn't feeling him, but she was. She was the one who made the first move at the poetry spot. She probably turned down dozens of men on their first try, but who ends up getting her? The alleged stalker. He knew she dug him. Women don't act in logical ways. Men who understand that, like Darius, don't accept a no when he knows she's into him even if she won't admit it.
When you said, “my 2023 ass would’ve went into the good drawer, immediately” 🤣

I never liked Darius’ group of friends. Sheila was into him, Hollywood was jealous of him and the other one was in a miserable marriage. Ed was the only one who minded the business that paid him. I also noticed that @8:48, Nina is walking on side face the street. He didn’t switch places. Most guys I know would switch places with me in case of a car got out of control it would hit him and not me. Call me crazy but there is a meme on this🤷🏾♀️

Sorry ain’t enough red flags to ruin this movie for me. 😂 #SorryNotSorry 🤷🏽♀️
Its a realistic love story that has stood the test of time. Too many times, folks want Hallmark type shit where everything is perfect. That's why couples fall nowadays. This was perfect over 25 years ago, and still prefect to this day.

Nina was very ambitious with her career, and Darius dedicated his novel to her and the poems that he was reading at the sanctuary all that is what added sparks to, their relationship!
I always wish they gave us more context as to how long Nina was gone to NY the first time.
Darius def didn’t know nothing about boundaries… omg!
“and fuCKED OLe boi”😭😭😭😭rent free
I love this critique! Very well narrated and explained. Um, yes, Nina and Darius were toxic as Flint water. Lol But the mood, soundtrack, overall vibe, sexual energy and cast chemistry hooked you in like crack. I saw this at the movies my junior year at CAU. Love Jones started some shit that year lol
Great analysis on the love portion. Looking back at a lot of 90s/2000s movies and shows, all the relationships were toxic. 😂 I was watching The Game yesterday, and where I once thought Melanie and Derwin were cute, I realized that their relationship was toxic as hell! 😂😂 Anyway back to the Love Jones one thing I did really like about this movie was how Nina wasn’t some big time photographer, we saw her in a job role that she didn’t like, and eventually got let go from. To her getting rejected, to the finally achieving success towards the end of the movie. It’s more realistic. A lot of 90s movies show the women super successful, partners are their firm, top marketing associate in their firm, etc etc. And it creates a sort of unrealistic narrative.
I also forgot to mention, the movie Premature reminds me of Love Jones mixed with Just Another Girl on the IRT.
And she tells him after they have sex, yoooo I just noticed that. Savage lol
Larenz Tate would be a good candidate to play Stevie Wonder in a biopic.

She was wrong for listening to her single friend. She advised Nina to tell Darrius about her going back to be with her ex. Nina didn't want to go back to her ex. Nina really had feelings for Darrius. Instead of telling that to Darius, she decided to play games. She wanted Darrius to read her mind, instead of telling him what she wanted. She left Darius to be with an ex. What was Darrius supposed to do while she was gone and doing God know what? She came back and saw that Darrius moved on and got jealous. After taking bad advice from her single friend AGAIN, Nina decided to date a friend of Darrius. Nina played too many games. Nina listening to her single friend was the problem. They both were toxic AF
